Increased age and obesity diminish motivation, perseverance, and spatial memory function. Aerobic exercise interventions have successfully rescued some of these processes. However, in older and heavier populations aerobic exercise is not as sustainable due to high risk of injury. Resistance exercise consists of physical activity where maximum oxygen consumption is not increased and has been proposed as a safe and effective intervention for this population. Here, we used touchscreen-based cognitive testing to elucidate the influence of resistance exercise on motivation and spatial memory in aged, diet-induced obese mice, using a water restriction procedure I develop in Chapter 2. Mice underwent …

Analysis Of Added Sugar Intake Of Canadian Children And Adolescents: Findings From The Canadian Community Health Survey On Nutrition, Ulaina Tariq Aug 2018

Analysis Of Added Sugar Intake Of Canadian Children And Adolescents: Findings From The Canadian Community Health Survey On Nutrition, Ulaina Tariq

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Background: The added sugar intake of children and adolescents in Canada warrants more research due to its contribution to obesity, diabetes, and other chronic and mental health issues.

Objective: To assess the trends and correlates of added sugar intake in Canadians aged 6 to 17.

Methods: Data were provided by the Canadian Community Health Survey-Nutrition 2004 and 2015. Statistical analysis included multivariable regression and t-tests.

Results: In 2015, 35.66% of Canadians aged 6 to 17 met sugar intake guidelines. Compared to 2004, in 2015 intake of fruit and vegetables was higher, while sugar and caloric intake was lower. Sedentary activity, …

The Effects Of A Six Month Nutrition Intervention On Diet Quality In Persons With Or At Risk For The Metabolic Syndrome, Rebecca Horne

One quarter of the world’s population is thought to have the metabolic syndrome, and first line treatments include dietary strategies for weight loss. Restrictive diet interventions commonly used in research appear to lack long-term sustainability; therefore, other approaches are warranted. The Canadian Healthy Eating Index (CHEI) was used as a framework and outcome measure for a 6-month ad-libitum diet quality intervention that assessed diet quality and key risk factors of the syndrome. Participants (n=23) were randomized to the nutrition program (n=16) or usual care (control) (n=7). Post intervention, CHEI scores increased by 9.1 and 3.4 points intervention and control, respectively …
