Effects Of Diameter-Limit And Two-Age Timber Harvesting On Songbird Populations On An Industrial Forest In Central West Virginia, Cathy Ann Weakland Jan 2000

Effects Of Diameter-Limit And Two-Age Timber Harvesting On Songbird Populations On An Industrial Forest In Central West Virginia, Cathy Ann Weakland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Many studies examining forest fragmentation effects on songbirds have been conducted in landscapes significantly altered by urbanization or agriculturalization rather than forested landscapes. There is some evidence that forest fragmentation due to timber harvesting has different effects on bird abundance than fragmentation from other land uses. It is unknown how songbirds respond to different forms of timber harvesting as fragmentation events. Also, it is unclear if microhabitat-level or landscape-level characteristics are more important predictors of breeding bird occurrence in the central Appalachians. The objectives of my study were to determine the short-term effects of diameter-limit and two-age timber harvesting on …

Evaluating The Durability Of Wood/Frp Bonds Through Chemical Kinetics Using A Range Of Mechanical Test Methods, Jonathan Philip Alexander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hybrid composites of wood and fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) exhibit a flexibility of design properties through choices in fiber type, amount, orientation and resin type. With this flexibility comes the need to measure the durability of the composite material system, especially the bond between these two materials due to their markedly different responses to moisture. This study is two-fold; the first section examines methods for the mechanical testing and durability of wood/FRP laminations. Six mechanical tests were evaluated and a modified block shear method was identified as the most suitable due to its ability to provide representative results independent of …

Bird Distribution And Conservation In The Ailao Mountains, Yunnan, China, Zhijun Wang, Chris Carpenter, Stephen S. Young

Stephen Young

Results from a long-term ecological study carried out by Chinese and American researchers in the Xujiaba Ecological Reserve within the Ailao Shan Nature Reserve show the importance of the Ailao Mountains as a sanctuary for numerous bird species. Natural forest cover is decreasing throughout Southwestern China and adjacent Southeast Asia leading to a diminished habitat for plants and animals throughout the region. Remnant primary and secondary forests in the Ailao Mountains supply habitat for an abundance of bird species and other wildlife, many facing possible extinction. This study analyzes the bird diversity of three different ecosystems: primary broad-leaved evergreen forest …
