Outdoor Living Barn: A Specialized Windbreak, Kris Irwin, Jerry Bratton Aug 1996

Outdoor Living Barn: A Specialized Windbreak, Kris Irwin, Jerry Bratton

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

In April of 1987, a spring blizzard swept through northern Kansas and southern Nebraska killing nearly 60,000 newborn calves and other winter stressed animals. This tremendous loss could have been lessened had protection, such as outdoor living barns (OLB), been provided to reduce the windchill. An outdoor living barn is a specialized windbreak, typically composed of trees and shrubs, and strategically located in open grasslands, center pivot irrigation corners, and pasture areas to protect livestock during severe weather situations.

The purpose of an OLB is to: 1) defuse and deflect cold winds away from livestock, moderating the windchill; and 2) …

Mr400: Assessing Compliance With Bmps On Harvested Sites In Maine: Final Report, Russel D. Briggs, Alan J. Kimball, Janet Cormier

Miscellaneous Reports

The research was designed to help answer three questions: (1) What are the documented types of impacts on water quality from forestry activities in Maine? (2) Do timber harvesters use the best management practices recommended by the state to control water pollution? (3) Are these practices effective when they are used?

Pollen Dispersal In Low-Density Populations Of Three Neotropical Tree Species, Jason D. Nason, E. A. Stacy, J. L. Hamrick, S. P. Hubbell, R. B. Foster, R. Condit Aug 1996

Pollen Dispersal In Low-Density Populations Of Three Neotropical Tree Species, Jason D. Nason, E. A. Stacy, J. L. Hamrick, S. P. Hubbell, R. B. Foster, R. Condit

Jason D Nason

Studies of mating patterns of tropical trees, typically involving common species, have revealed that most species are outcrossed and that, in some cases, a significant reaction of outcross pollen moves long distances. We evaluated mating systems and effective pollen dispersal for three hermaphroditic insect-pollinated Neotropical tree species, Calophyllum longifolium, Spondias mombin and Turpinia occidentalis, all of which occurred at low adult densities at the study site. Mating patterns were estimated for each maternal tree within 84-ha populations of C. Longifoliuman d S. mombin in 1992 and 1993 and within a 50-ha population of T. occidentalis in 1993. Each population was …

Mr399: Forestry-Related Nonpoint Source Pollution In Maine: A Literature Review, Craig Stafford, Mark Leathers, Russell Briggs

Miscellaneous Reports

A great deal of research effort has been devoted to the topic of erosion and sedimentation from forest lands. This report reviews the literature dealing with the potential sources of forestry-related nonpoint source pollution and impacts on surface water, with particular emphasis on those studies conducted in Maine and in the Northeast. This review is organized along the following topics: sediment, temperature, nitrate, phosphorus, acidity, and herbicides.

Project Report No. 45, Loblolly Pine Plantations In East Texas Thinned And Unthinned - Total Wood Flow Comparison A Simulation, J. David Lenhart, Curtis Vanderschaaf Jun 1996

Project Report No. 45, Loblolly Pine Plantations In East Texas Thinned And Unthinned - Total Wood Flow Comparison A Simulation, J. David Lenhart, Curtis Vanderschaaf

Informal Project Reports

In East Texas loblolly pine plantations, is the total wood flow from a thinning and a final harvest greater than total wood flow from just a final harvest? That is, does including one thinning in the rotation have an advantage over no thinning in the production of wood during the rotation?

The Effects Of Fines, Drying Intensity And Recycling On Pulp And Paper Properties, Chiranjiv K. Singh Jun 1996

The Effects Of Fines, Drying Intensity And Recycling On Pulp And Paper Properties, Chiranjiv K. Singh

Masters Theses

The effects of fines level, drying intensity and recycling on pulp and paper properties of bleached softwood kraft were evaluated graphically and statistically.

Fiber fines (100-mesh) were mixed in proportions of 0, 10, 20, 40% with the long fiber fraction. These pulps were tested for fiber length distribution. Handsheets prepared from these pulps were dried at low (air dry) and high (220°F, 4.25 min) drying intensities. These handsheets were recycled and new handsheets were dried at the above drying levels.

Water retention values increased with increasing level of fines for virgin pulp. Recycling resulted in a 20% decrease in water …

The Factors Influencing Electrographic Toner Flotation, Udaykumar Ratilal Raval Jun 1996

The Factors Influencing Electrographic Toner Flotation, Udaykumar Ratilal Raval

Masters Theses

Conventional deinking is the process of removing the ink from usable paper fiber. Electrographic toners are hydrophobic in nature because they have negligible negative charge. A study of the effect of fundamental properties leading to electrographic toner flotation in presence of free fibers has not been reported.

Flotation deinking of fused "sharp" toner fraction below 300 micron in the presence of free fibers was performed in the Hallimond tube. Cationic (Dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide - DTAB) and anionic (Sodium dodecyl sulfate - SDS) surfactants having similar molecular weights were used at two concentration levels and two pH levels. The effect of …

Land Degradation And Desertification In Arid And Semiarid Regions, Youssef Bahddou May 1996

Land Degradation And Desertification In Arid And Semiarid Regions, Youssef Bahddou

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Definitions of desertification have been numerous and the subject of hot debate. The definition proposed in 1991 by United Nations UNEP's Desertification Control/Programme Acting Centre (DC/PAC) was "land degradation in arid, semiarid and dry sub-humid areas resulting mainly from adverse human impact". This definition incorporates a number of processes which lead to the impoverishment of soils and vegetation, where human activity has been the main contributory factor. Examples include the loss of organic matter, increase in soil bulk density, decrease in infiltration, high levels of erosion, dunes formation, salinization, and compaction and displacement of top soil. The definition noted above …

Effectiveness Of Carbaryl And Pyrethroid Insecticides For Protection Of Engelmann Spruce From Attack By Spruce Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Karen J. Johnson May 1996

Effectiveness Of Carbaryl And Pyrethroid Insecticides For Protection Of Engelmann Spruce From Attack By Spruce Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Karen J. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A field experiment tested the effectiveness of carbaryl and two pyrethroid insecticides, cyfluthrin and esfenvalerate, in protecting high-value Engelmann spruce trees from attack by Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby. Carbaryl suspension at the 2% registered rate and a reduced rate of 1 % were both effective in protecting Engelmann spruce from attack by D. rufipennis through two pheromone baiting periods and 24 months following insecticide application. Cyfluthrin at 0.025% rate and esfenvalerate at 0.025 and 0.05% rates provided effective protection through one pheromone baiting and 12 months following insecticide application. Only cyfluthrin at 0.008% rate was judged ineffective protection 12 months following …
