Ice Storm Damage To Virginia Coastal Plain Forests During The Christmas 1998 Ice Storm, Peter Elstner, Stewart Ware

On December 23-25, 1998, a major ice storm struck southeastern Virginia. The storm-deposited glaze ice felled trees and limbs, causing a power outage and highway blockage. Between February and April, 1999, we recorded occurrence, severity, and type of damage to trees over 2.5 cm dbh in nine mostly gently sloping plots in Matoaka Woods at the College of William and Mary. Frequency and severity of damage varied with species and with size of trees. Canopy damage occurred in 75% of large Fagus grandifolia trees, but in only 6% of small Sassafras albidum stems. In this study, a food demand analysis of Erzurum central district was conducted. This study differs from previous ones by the use of current data and a new model. Various elasticities computed in this study might be used in the analysis of food consumption policies. The cross-sectional and time series data used were collected by surveying 30 families once every three months from July 1995 to April 1997. In this study, the proportional saturation and the fluid uptake of preservative liquid (that was) applied under the same pressure was investigated comparatively on the various longitudinal length of wood specimens in the two softwood species. Wood specimens of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.)Carr.) and Corsican pine (Pinus nigra var.mantima) representative of two different permeability classifications, cut into five different lengths were treated with tanalith-C using the full-cell process under the same conditions. This research was realized to study the morphological characteristics of 3-0 years old seedlings, obtained from seeds, which were collected from 22 Lebanon cedar seed stands. The seedlings were grown at the Nursery of the Black Sea Technical University. Seedling morphological properties were studied including height, root-collar diameter, number of branches, the length of the longest branch, and fresh and dry weights of root, stem, and seedlings. This trial was conducted on the experimental fields of the Agricultural Faculty at Atatürk University in 1987-92 and five-year results were evaluated except for the first year. The effects of different row spacings (20, 30 and 40 cm), cutting stubble heights (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 cm) and stubble burning on seed yield and yield components of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum) were studied. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of water-use efficiency and changes in the yield-response factor of cotton irrigated with an irrigation drip system. The amount of water applied was based on free surface evaporation from a screened Class-A Pan. This study was carried out to establish some physical properties and proximate chemical compositions of taro corms collected from Anamur and Bozyazı in İçel province, Turkey. This study was performed to determine the effects of bleaching and impregnation processes on the hardness of the varnish layer in beech wood. For this purpose, samples were impregnated with Tanalith-CBC and Immersol-WR 2000 and bleached with the solution groups (18%) NaOH+H_2O_2, NaOH+ Ca(OH)_2 +H_2O_2, NaOH+ MgSO_4+ H_2O_2, NaHSO_3+H_2C_2O_4.2H_2, NaSiO_3 +H_2O_2, KMnO_4 +NaHSO_3+H_2O_2. Synthetic varnishing was used and the hardness of the varnish layer was determined according to ASTM-D-4366. The effect of salicylic acid (SA)and Glomus etunicatum (GE)on plant development of tomatoes and infection potential of wilt disease Fusarium oxysporum f.sp lycopersici (Fol)were studied. The effects of different SA concentrations on mycelial development of Fol were tested in vitro and two concentrations of SA and GE were included in pot experiment. SA completely inhibited the mycelial development of Fol in vitro at concentrations from 0.6 mM to 1.0 mM and ED50 value was found as 0.51 mM. In this study, variability in pathogenicity among Fusarium graminearum isolates from different locations in Ohio was determined. The most virulent isolates from these locations were chosen and used in segregation studies to evaluate the resistance of some resistant by resistant winter wheat crosses to Fusarium head scab. Differences in pathogenicity levels were significant among isolates even from the same location. Several generalizations can be made about the segregating generations in this study. Both an \alpha-amylase gene of Bacillus subtilis RSKK246 and a gene encoding \beta-glucanase from B.subtilis RSKK243 were cloned and expressed in both E.coli XL1-Blue MRF and B.subtilis YB886 by using the vectors pUC18 and pUB110 respectively. These genes were also cloned into the E.coli-yeast shuttle vectors pRS406 and pRS416 for transfer into the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.These constructs carrying \alpha -amylase and \alpha -glucanase,genes which were cloned into the pRS406 vector,were expressed by integration into the yeast chromosome.These genes were also expressed in the yeast by autonomous replication of the ARS/CEN plasmid pRS416.This work demonstrates that genes belonging to B.subtilis can …

In this research, partial nucleotide sequences of the axi 1 gene, which is related to auxin perception and transduction, isolated from Vicia sativa using cDNA library screening were investigated. Four V. sativa cDNA clones representing homologous of the tobacco axi 1 (auxin independent) cDNA clone were isolated and characterized. With sequence analysis two different clones were observed, called 10/3a and 16/3b. Sequences about 500 bp from the 5' end and 450 bp from the 3' end were determined from the 10/3a clone. Axi 1 is the only characterized auxin independent gene in tobacco plants. In this study, the effect of axi 1 gene on cortical cell division during different stages of nitrogen fixation and on the role of polar auxin transport were investigated. Root and nodule samples were taken from pea seedlings 24 hours, 48 hours, 6 days and 10 days after inoculation with R. leguminosarum PRE strain. In maize, three male testers and six female lines together with their 18 F_1 hybrids were evaluated to study the general and specific combining ability estimates and heterosis following line x tester approach. Analysis of variance indicated the existence of significant variation among F_1 and parents for all characteristics. Average heterosis was significant for all characteristics studied and was positive, except for days to tasseling, with the average yield of hybrids being 79.8% above that of the parents. It is of great importance to study the activities of fungi in forest ecosystems for both protecting them and optimizing their functions. In this study, we present 130 species of xylotroph micromycetes found on six different species of oak in Azerbaijan. Of the species found, 54 were from 38 genera from 10 families of the Ascomycotina subdivision. Thirty-four were of the Pyrenomycetes class in which many have stromas or their peritheciums formed in dense groups. Although fire has been used extensively over long periods of time in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) ecosystems, little is known concerning the effects of frequent fire use on nutrient cycling and decomposition. To better understand the long-term effects of fire on these processes, foliar litter decomposition rates were quantified in a study investigating prescribed fire and uneven-aged loblollypine management in the Upper Coastal Plain in Arkansas. This study was conducted under Tokat ecological conditions during 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1995/96. Fifteen narbonne vetch (Vicia narbonensis L.) lines obtained from ICARDA were used. The results of variance analyses showed that there were statistically significant differences among lines for some characters. The highest seed yield (217.2 kg/da) was produced by the line 2466 and the lowest (144.9 kg/da) by the line 2380. 1000-seed weight ranged between 158.7 and 301.2 g, whereas biological yield ranged between 547.4 and 848.1 kg/da. The kinetics of water absorption by chickpeas (Koçbaşı, Kuşbaşı), lentils (green Pul) and beans (Battal, Dermason, Horoz, Şeker) grown in Turkey were studied by a gravimetric method during soaking at 15, 25 and 40ºC to determine moisture diffusivity of these selected legumes. The water diffusion coefficients of the legumes were in the range 9.71x10^{-11} - 5.98x10^{-10} m^2/s for the chickpeas, 3.53x10^{-10} - 1.33x10^{-9} m^2/s for the lentils and 4.35x10^{-11} - 3.79x10^{-9} m^2/s for the beans. This study was conducted to determine the agricultural technical conditions and irrigation systems for obtaining high yields in wheat production. A questionnaire was prepared and applied to farmers growing wheat in Ankara, Konya and Eskişehir in 1996. After analyzing the data, we determined the water resources, the amount of water used for wheat production, the allocation of crops, and the technical and financial problems faced by farmers in the research area. The objective of this study was to evaluate grain yield and yield components of popcorn with different nitrogen rates and plant densities. Field studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 at Kazova Plain in Tokat. The experiment was designed in a randomized-complete-block design with a split-plot arrangement with three replications. The treatments comprised six levels of nitrogen (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg N /ha) and four plant densities (5.7, 7.0, 9.5 and 14.0 plants /m^2).
