Woody Vegetation Of The Crystal Mountains Region, Derwood Mayo, P. L. Raines
Woody Vegetation Of The Crystal Mountains Region, Derwood Mayo, P. L. Raines
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Arms-length rectangle transects and nested quadrats were used to sample overstory, understory and shrub layers on south-facing mountains, north-facing mountains and flat areas along Collier and Montgomery Creeks in Montgomery County, Arkansas. Data were collected and used to calculate importance values for trees and density values for shrubs. These data indicate that the shortleaf pine-oak forest type occurs on south-facing mountains while variants of white oak-black oak-northern red oak type occur on north-facing mountains and flat areas. Beech (Fagus grandifolia Var. caroliniana [Loud.] Fern and Rehd.) is common along Collier Creek and is completely absent from Montgomery Creek watershed. The …

Aeration, Phosphorous, And Lime Affect Nitrogen Mineralization In Imperfectly Drained Forest Soils, M. S. Bhangoo, D. J. Albritton, Eugene Shoulders
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Unamended, limed, and phosphorus-enriched Caddo, Beauregard, and Wrightsville silt loams (A1 horizon) were incubated for six months at room temperature under two moisture regimes. At field capacity, unamended soils lost 0.7% of organic matter and converted 166 ppm of organic nitrogen to inorganic forms. Ninety-five percent of the converted nitrogen was present as N₄-H or NO₃-N. Limed and phosphorus-treated soils at field capacity lost about 1.0% of organic matter and accumulated 191 to 201 ppm of inorganic nitrogen. Submerged soils lost very little organic matter and accumulated only 24 to 28 ppm of inorganic nitrogen. There was a loss of …
Dry Matter And Minerals In Loblolly Pine Plantation On Four Arkansas Soils, Timothy T. Ku, James D. Burton
Dry Matter And Minerals In Loblolly Pine Plantation On Four Arkansas Soils, Timothy T. Ku, James D. Burton
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Average contents of N, P, K, Ca, and Na and total above ground dry matter were determined in 19-year-old unthinned loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations in southeastern Arkansas. Three stands were sampled on each of four sites: well and poorly drained coastal plain soils and well and poorly drained loessial soils. Total dry weights, determined from 15 felled trees on each of the 12 plots, ranged from 127,000 kg/ha on poorly drained loessial soil to 173,300 kg/ha on poorly drained coastal plain soil. Ranking of sites, in descending order of production of dry matter, P, K, and Na was: …
