CUCUMBERS are included among the 20 important commercial truck crops that are shipped to the markets of the United States in large quantities. The area planted to cucumbers for table purposes in 1940 was 42,870 acres, and the crop produced was valued at $4,993,000, as reported by the Crop Reporting Board, Division of Agricultural Statistics, Agricultural Marketing Service. This acreage is exclusive of approximately 91,000 acres of cucumbers grown for pickles and also of the crop produced in greenhouses. The sixteenth annual meetings of the Rocky Mountain Conference of Entomologists were held at Cameron Pass, Colorado, August 17 to August 21, 1941. Some time was devoted during these meetings to a discussion of the research work that is being done at the present with grasshoppers. In the potato-growing section of the North Platte Valley of western Nebraska, the difficulty of producing high quality potatoes frequently is greatly increased by the presence of destructive populations of the potato flea beetle Epitrix cucumeris Harris. Csually foliage injury by the adults is comparatively unimportant, but larval injury to tubers often greatly reduces the quality of the crop. Since prevention of tuber injury by the larvae has extended downward from the sides of the cages.
