Morphological And Genetic Analyses In The Melanoplus Packardii Group (Orthoptera: Acrididae), Mathew L. Brust, Erica J. Lindroth, W. Wyatt Hoback, Robert Wright, Kathryn J. Hanford, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Melanoplus packardii Scudder was described in 1897. Three additional closely-related species were later described and their status as species has been questioned on numerous occasions. We examined morphology from specimens collected in Nebraska which fit descriptions of three of the four forms and specimens that appeared to be hybrids. We found distinct morphological characters suggesting species status for M. foedus and M. packardii, but not for M. foedus fluviatilis. Examination of aedeagi of these three forms suggests that M. foedus and M. packardii are each distinct, but that the aedeagi of M. f. fluviatilis and M. f. foedus cannot …

Review Of The Genus Microchilus Blanchard (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Geniatini), Mary Liz Jameson Jan 2008

Review Of The Genus Microchilus Blanchard (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Geniatini), Mary Liz Jameson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The Brazilian scarab beetle genus Microchilus Blanchard (Rutelinae: Geniatini) is reviewed. Based on examination of type specimens, Microchilus beckeri Martínez is transferred to the genus Leucothyreus becoming L. beckeri (Martínez), new combination; Leucothyreus bucki Machatschke is a new junior synonym of L. beckeri (Martínez). Microchilus is limited to two species, M. beckeri (Martínez) and a new species, Microchilus rodmani Jameson, here described. Characters that circumscribe the genus, biology, and species distribution are discussed.

Description Of Khamul, Gen. N. (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Eurytomidae), With A Hypothesis Of Its Phylogenetic Placement, Michael W. Gates Jan 2008

Description Of Khamul, Gen. N. (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Eurytomidae), With A Hypothesis Of Its Phylogenetic Placement, Michael W. Gates

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Khamul n. gen., a distinctive eurytomid in the subfamily Eurytominae is described from the Neotropics based upon the type species, K. erwini, n. sp. A hypothesis of its phylogenetic placement within Eurytominae is presented, and four new species are described: K. erwini, K. gothmogi, K. lanceolatus, and K. tolkeini. Diagnostic features are included to distincguish this taxon from other eurytomines and a key to species presented. Its biology is unknown, but label data indicate walking stick eggs ( sp.; Phasmatodea: Prisopodidae) as a possible host.

Revision Of The Neotropical Genus Trizogeniates Ohaus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Geniatini), Karla Villatoro

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

A comprehensive, systematic treatment of the poorly studied Neotropical genus Trizogeniates (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Geniatini) is provided. This revision includes a key to species, species descriptions, and distributional and temporal data. Based on this study, the genus Trizogeniates now includes 30 species. The following eight species are new: Trizogeniates ohausi Villatoro, T. venezuelensis Villatoro, T. geminatus Villatoro, T. caiporae Villatoro, T. crispospinatus Villatoro, T. catsus Villatoro, T. aphilus Villatoro, and T. eris Villatoro. Trizogeniates zischkai Martínez is a new synonym of T. temporalis Ohaus; T. grandis Ohaus is a new synonym of T. cribicollis (Lucas). T. andicola Ohaus is a …

Megacyllene (Megacyllene) cryptofrasciata n. sp. from Argentina is described and illustrated. M. quinquefasciata (Melzer, 1931), and Megacyllene rotundicollis Zajciw, 1963 are transferred from the subgenus Megacyllene Casey 1912 to Sierracyllene Tippmann, 1960. Megacyllene (Sierrocyllene) tafivallensis n. sp. is described from northwestern Argentina. Dexithea spixii (Laporte & Gory, 1836), and Plagionotus latreillei (Laporte & Gory, 1836) are transferred to Megacyllene (sensu stricto), excluding Dexithea, and Plagionotus from the South American fauna of Clytini. Neoclytus famelicus(Burmeister, 1865) is synonymized with N. ypsilon Chevrolat, 1861. Additional new records of Clytini from Argentina, Paraguay, and Ecuador are also presented here. A …

Redescriptions, New Combinations, Synonymies, And New Records Of South American Lepturini (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Lepturinae), Osvaldo Di Iorio

Insecta Mundi

Some Neotropical Lepturini are studied: Euryptera latipennis Audinet-Serville, 1828 (type species) redescription, Strangalia dimidiata (Redtenbacher, 1868) new combination (=Strangalia melanophthisis (Berg, 1889) new combination, new synonymy, and lectotype designation), Strangalia fulvicornis (Bates, 1872) new record from Argentina; Strangalia melanura (Redtenbacher, 1868) new combination from Brazil; Strangalia rubricollis (Bates, 1870) new record from Peru. "Leptura" bonariensis Burmeister, 1865 is not a true Leptura, being exotic for Argentina and for the Neotropical fauna; the type-specimen was mislabeled as coming from Buenos Aires. Elytral patterns, posterior tarsi, antennae, 5th apparent urosternite, and elytral apices of E. latipennis, and …

B. mexicana Lopes is recorded from the Nearctic region for the first time.
