Active Projects In The United States And Canada Dealing With Grasshopper Research, H.C. Severin

Agricultural Experiment Station Entomology Pamphlets (1940-1952)

The sixteenth annual meetings of the Rocky Mountain Conference of Entomologists were held at Cameron Pass, Colorado, August 17 to August 21, 1941. Some time was devoted during these meetings to a discussion of the research work that is being done at the present with grasshoppers. It was felt by those participating in the discussions that it would be highly desirable if certain data were available concerning grasshopper research projects that are being actively investigated at the present time in the United States and in Canada. The author if this paper was asked to assume the responsibility of formulating an …

Tillage Methods In Grasshopper Control, Gerald B. Spawn Dec 1941

Tillage Methods In Grasshopper Control, Gerald B. Spawn

Agricultural Experiment Station Entomology Pamphlets (1940-1952)

In the light of the present world food situation, the control of insects assumes a role of major importance in the agricultural program. Various insects, among which grasshoppers are one of the most notorious, attack our growing groups, upon which we depend for food. Others attack grains in storage; plant and animal products of many kinds; clothing and articles of furniture; and our domestic livestock. Man himself is not immune from attack as is borne out of by the epidemics of louse transmitted typhus which are today growing in extent in certain parts of Europe. The losses sustained by mankind …

Tillage Methods In Grasshopper Control, Gerald B. Spawn

Agricultural Experiment Station Entomology Pamphlets (1940-1952)

During the past 88 years of agricultural history in South Dakota, 38 have been years in which grasshoppers were present in above normal numbers. During 17 of these 38 years grasshoppers have been a serious pest of agricultural crops in South Dakota and neighboring states. Many millions of dollars worth of cereal, forage and truck crops during each of these 17 years were destroyed by hungry hordes of the insects. The impetus given soil conservation work and farm woodlot and shelterbelt plantings of trees in the past few years has brought about the realization that grasshoppers are far more than …

The Spiders Of South Dakota, Allan G. Peterson Jan 1939

The Spiders Of South Dakota, Allan G. Peterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spiders constitute the order of Araneida, which is one of the principal divisions of the class Arachnida. The Arachnida also includes scorpions, whipscorpions, pseudosscorpions, harvestmen, mites, and ticks. Some of the distinguishing characteristics of the Araneida are as follows: The head and thorax are consolidated into a cephalothorax. The abdomen is unsegmented and joined to the cephalothorax by a short narrow stalk. There are six pairs of appendages on the cephalothorax: chelicerae, pedipalps with heir basal masticulatory endites, and four pairs of walking legs.

A Study Of The Sculpture Of The Chorion Of The Eggs Of Eighteen South Dakota Grasshoppers (Acridiidae), Raymond Cecil Bushland Jan 1934

A Study Of The Sculpture Of The Chorion Of The Eggs Of Eighteen South Dakota Grasshoppers (Acridiidae), Raymond Cecil Bushland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The most destructive grasshoppers that occur in South Dakota are those belonging to the genus Melanoplus. Of those, the common and harmful species are Melanoplus bivittatus (Say) and Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas). Other species that are of considerable economic importance, and, at times, fully as important as the two species mentioned, are Melanoplus femur-rubrum (Deg.) and Melanoplus mexicanus (Sauss.). Before attempting to work out a plan for grasshopper control, it is desirable at times to know what species are to be encountered. The control may vary to some extent for the different species. It has been found that Melanoplus differentialis hatches …

A Key To Differentiate Nymphal Stages Of Melanoplus Differentialis (Thomas) From Those Of Melanoplus Bivittatus (Say), (Orthoptera); Also, Descriptions Of Instars And A Key For Identification Of Nymphal Stages Of These Two Species, Gerald Bishop Spawn Jan 1933

A Key To Differentiate Nymphal Stages Of Melanoplus Differentialis (Thomas) From Those Of Melanoplus Bivittatus (Say), (Orthoptera); Also, Descriptions Of Instars And A Key For Identification Of Nymphal Stages Of These Two Species, Gerald Bishop Spawn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the past few years South Dakota and neighboring states have been confronted with serious outbreaks of locusts. Whole crops of small grain and corn have been destroyed by the voracious insect hordes which at times left only bare ground where once had stood waving fields of grain. Chief among the aggressors have been the two species, Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas), the Differential Locust, and Melanoplus bivittatus (Say), the Two-Striped Locust. The contents of this paper include studies of these two species.

Some Effects Of A Constant Temperature And Different Relative Humidities Upon Egg Laying Of Melanoplus Bivittatus Scudder., Millard Jewell Hatten Jan 1932

Some Effects Of A Constant Temperature And Different Relative Humidities Upon Egg Laying Of Melanoplus Bivittatus Scudder., Millard Jewell Hatten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Of the various species of grasshoppers occurring in rather extensive numbers year after year in the northwestern plains states, Melanoplus bivittatus is one of the most prevalent and destructive. It was thought that a study of the influence of different temperatures and relative humidities upon the reproductive potential of this species might reveal some information and that this information might be of some value in an attempt to forecast the abundance of this grasshopper in years following others in which the factors of temperature and relative humidity were known.

The Morphology Of The Seminal Vesicles, Accessory Glands, And The Ejaculatory Canal Of Melanoplus Differentialis (Thomas) And An External Morphological And A Histological Study Of The Seminal Vesicles, Accessory Glands, And Ejaculatory Canal Of This Grasshopper, Wilbur T. Reierson Jan 1932

Reierson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to record the results of an investigation, by the writer, upon the reproductive system of Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas) with special emphasis placed upon the external morphology and the histological study of the seminal vesicles, accessory glands, and the ejaculatory duct; and also to record conclusions as to the probable function of these organs.

Studies In The Life History Of The Croton Bug, Blatella Germanica (Linnaeus), Laurence Adams Carruth Jan 1931

Studies In The Life History Of The Croton Bug, Blatella Germanica (Linnaeus), Laurence Adams Carruth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Croton bug, or German Roach as it is commonly called, has been widely known for centuries. In the past, a considerable amount of work was done in attempting to find methods of controlling this insect, but relatively little attention was given to a study of its morphology, time of development, or to the finer details of the life history. this lack of information is probably due, in part to the fact that there are several similar common species of roaches and also because the Croton bug has probably received less attention than the other roaches, at least from a …

The Morphology, Life History, And Control Of Some Common Species Of Oniscoidea Found In South Dakota, M. T. Fredricksen Jan 1929

The Morphology, Life History, And Control Of Some Common Species Of Oniscoidea Found In South Dakota, M. T. Fredricksen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since practically no work has been done upon the life history and development of the common pill bugs or sow bugs, it is the aim of this paper to record the investigations of the life history and development as carried on by the author. The morphology was added in order to give the reader a definite idea of the organization and structure of these species.

A Systematic Treatise Of The Coccidae (Scale Insects) Of Brookings County, South Dakota, Merrill K. Riley Jan 1929

A Systematic Treatise Of The Coccidae (Scale Insects) Of Brookings County, South Dakota, Merrill K. Riley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this paper to present in an introductory manner a systematic treatise of the scale insects of South Dakota, by making an intensive study of all species represented in Brookings County. It can be asserted that this paper is a complete treatise of all species present, but a thorough attempt was made to obtain specimens of all existing species. This treatise involves only the species now present, though at times other forms have been reported. Notes have been included giving the plants, location, and abundance.

A Study In The Metabolism Of The Adult Honey Bee, M. D. Farrar Jan 1927

A Study In The Metabolism Of The Adult Honey Bee, M. D. Farrar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of metabolism in the higher forms of life has been carried on for many year and much has been found out that has been of great importance in understanding the way things live and grow. It has been only in the last few years that attention has been given to this phase of the work in insects. The extensive work that has been carried on concerning metabolism in men and animals is the basis for the more recent researches on the lower forms including the microorganisms. Before this work could be carried out on the small forms it …
