Letter From Lawrence W. Quate To Dr. Jane C. Dirks-Edmunds, Lawrence W. Quate
Letter From Lawrence W. Quate To Dr. Jane C. Dirks-Edmunds, Lawrence W. Quate
Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Documents
This letter from Dr. Lawrence W. Quate is one of many such letters received by Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds. Dirks-Edmunds consulted a number of experts to help identify the specimens she collected while conducting fieldwork. Quate was an expert on midges, also known as psychodids. Many of the colleagues with whom Dirks-Edmunds corresponded resided far afield from her research site on Saddleback Mountain in Oregon.
Dirks-Edmunds, a 1937 graduate of Linfield College, graduated from the University of Illinois in 1941; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.
Studies In Experimental Evolution, William Sidney Boyle
Studies In Experimental Evolution, William Sidney Boyle
Faculty Honor Lectures
The Principle of organic evolution is the most fundamental one yet discovered in the sciences concerned with the nature and origin of living things. During the one hundred years which have elapsed since Darwin's explanation of the mechanisms of evolution a great deal has been learned to supplement his theory. Nevertheless, students of evolution universally acknowledge the significance of his profound contributions. The importance of natural selection as a creative force in evolution is inescapable.
The present discussion is chiefly concerned with techniques which the writer has used to accelerate, or at least to manipulate, the evolutionary processes. It may …

Saddleback Research Project Collection Tabulation, Dorwin Lovell
Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Documents
This student inventory of insects found on Saddleback Mountain is part of Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds's ecological study of the area. The physical collection of the Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Papers (see collection information below) includes similar tabulations from multiple classes at Linfield, all documenting insect type and number found. Dr. Dirks-Edmunds compiled her students' research into various reports on her study's progress.
Dr. Dirks-Edmunds graduated from Linfield College in 1937; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.
Preliminary Report: Monolayer Behavior Studies, 1959, Bureau Of Reclamation
Preliminary Report: Monolayer Behavior Studies, 1959, Bureau Of Reclamation
Publications (WR)
During the fall of 1959, monolayer behavior studies were made on two lakes in the southwest; Boulder Basin of Lake Mead, Nevada, and Lake Sahuaro near Phoenix, Arizona.
These studies were made to evaluate the effect of geographical and climatological conditions on movement and behavior of monolayers. The Lake Sahuaro tests also were used to provide data for design and development of improved methods of application and maintenance of a film on this lake in anticipation of full scale, evaporation-reduction tests to be performed there during the summer of I960.
The Lake Mead studies produced the following general points of …

Wild Dog Control In The North-West, R J. Fraser
Wild Dog Control In The North-West, R J. Fraser
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
BECAUSE of its sparsely-settled condition, the North-West of Western Australia is almost an ideal breeding-ground and hunting-ground for wild dogs.
Even the best of the pastoral country is but thinly populated and there are large areas of rugged country which is seldom traversed by white men.

Termites Or White Ants, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
TERMITES are commonly but erroneously called "white ants."
Actually they are more nearly related to cockroaches than to ants, but their general appearance and subterranean habits have given strong support to the popular designation.
They may be divided into two major groups from an economic point of view, viz., wood-dwelling and earth-dwelling termites.
The Romney Marsh, J A. Mallett
The Romney Marsh, J A. Mallett
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE Romney Marsh, sometimes known as the Kent, is the most popular of the British longwoel sheep breeds used in Western Australia.
Rams of this breed are widely used for mating with Merino ewes, the crossbred female progeny of the matings being in demand for subsequent mating with Downs-type rams to produce export Iambs.

A Successful Campaign Against The Euro, E H M Ealey, T. M. Richardson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
RESULTS from a five-year research programme carried out by the C.S.I.R.O. on the Abydos-Woodstock Pastoral Research Station indicated that euros could be controlled in a practical and economic way by the traditional method of water poisoning,
if it was continued for an extended period and carried out over a large area. Smallscale trials supported this claim, but no opportunity had occurred to assess the practicability of a large-scale poisoning operation.
Rabbit Control In 1960, C Marshall
Rabbit Control In 1960, C Marshall
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
IN the year 1859, an enthusiastic sportsman in Victoria took delivery from the clipper "Lightning" of a small consignment of wild European rabbits which he joyfully released on his estate at Barwon Park, near Geelong, in order to assure himself of some rough shooting.
He was not the only rabbit importer on record—tame rabbits were brought into Australia before and after 1895 and doubtless there were other importations of the wild rabbit—but he is generally credited—or discredited—with having triggered off the rabbit plague.

Grasshoppers And Locusts In Western Australia, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
GRASSHOPPERS and locusts are among the most ancient enemies of the farmer, for they figured prominently in Biblical times, and periodically throughout the ages have devastated crops in all parts of the world.

Malaysian Parasites Xxxv-Xlix, W. W. Macdonald
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications
This is the third Study of the series from this Institute on the external and internal parasites and the biting insects of the Malaysian region. The earlier two volumes were planned and edited by Dr. J.R. Audy, and on his departure from Malaya in the middle of 1959 Mr. W. W. Macdonald continued the work which had been begun and collated and edited the papers in this present Study.
In the two previous volumes (Study No. 26, 1954 and No. 28, 1957) the emphasis was on the taxonomy of Trombiculid mites. In the present volume the emphasis has changed, and …
