Viral Mhc Class I Evasion Affects Anti-Viral T Cell Development And Responses, Elvin James Lauron Aug 2018

Viral Mhc Class I Evasion Affects Anti-Viral T Cell Development And Responses, Elvin James Lauron

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cytotoxic CD8+ T cells (CTLs) play a critical role in protective immunity against viruses, a fact underscored by the evolution of viral CTL evasion mechanisms. For instance, many viruses commonly target the major histocompatibility complex class I (MHCI) antigen presentation pathway to prevent CTLs from recognizing infected cells. A striking example of this is cowpox virus (CPXV), which interferes with MHCI antigen presentation through two distinct mechanisms. One mechanism of CPXV-mediated MHCI inhibition is to retain MHCI molecules in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The second mechanism is to prevent antigen peptide loading onto MHCI molecules. When combined these mechanisms result …

Examining The Role Of Hres On The Regulation Of Opioid Receptor Gene Expression In Neuronal Cells Undergoing Hypoxic Mimic Condition, Alberto Herrera Aug 2017

Examining The Role Of Hres On The Regulation Of Opioid Receptor Gene Expression In Neuronal Cells Undergoing Hypoxic Mimic Condition, Alberto Herrera

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Hypoxia is a condition of inadequate oxygen supply, which can induce cell death. Using human neuronal cells treated with a hypoxia memetic compound, desferoxamine (DFO), a hypoxic cell model system was created. Our lab reported previously that treatment with DFO resulted in the decrease of cell viability. However, there were still surviving neurons. The surviving cells did not exhibit significant morphological changes, as compared to the control cells, under confocal microscopy analysis using annexin-V-FLUOS and propidium iodide staining, indicating that they were not at apoptotic or necrotic stages. These surviving neurons, therefore, developed adaptive responses under hypoxic challenge. Several changes …

The Initial Effects Of Community Variables On Sand Prairie Restoration: Species Establishment And Community Responses, Robert Christopher Roos Aug 2014

The Initial Effects Of Community Variables On Sand Prairie Restoration: Species Establishment And Community Responses, Robert Christopher Roos

Masters Theses

We established a sand prairie restoration experiment in northern Lower Michigan’s pine-oak barrens to analyze the effect of different community variables (vegetative cover, species richness, biomass, diversity, and floristic quality) when comparing: (1) how our restoration efforts (seeded treatments) compare to natural community succession (control plots), (2) how different seeding treatments affect these community variables, specifically when evaluating (2a) the effect of grass seeding densities; and (2b) the effect of different forb guilds (early flowering, late flowering, and legumes) during the initial two growing seasons of restoration establishment. In general, a comparison between seeded treatments and non-seeded control treatments indicates …

Btk Regulated Macrophage Polarization In Response To Lipopolysaccharide, Joan Ní Gabhann, Emily Hams, Siobhán Smith, Claire Wynne, Jennifer C. Byrne, Kiva Brennan, Shaun Spence, Adrien Kissenpfennig Jan 2014

Btk Regulated Macrophage Polarization In Response To Lipopolysaccharide, Joan Ní Gabhann, Emily Hams, Siobhán Smith, Claire Wynne, Jennifer C. Byrne, Kiva Brennan, Shaun Spence, Adrien Kissenpfennig

Articles

Bacterial Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a strong inducer of inflammation and does so by inducing polarization of macrophages to the classic inflammatory M1 population. Given the role of Btk as a critical signal transducer downstream of TLR4, we investigated its role in M1/M2 induction. In Btk deficient (Btk−\−) mice we observed markedly reduced recruitment of M1 macrophages following intraperitoneal administration of LPS. Ex vivo analysis demonstrated an impaired ability of Btk−/− macrophages to polarize into M1 macrophages, instead showing enhanced induction of immunosuppressive M2-associated markers in response to M1 polarizing stimuli, a finding accompanied by reduced phosphorylation …

Alarm-Calling And Response Behaviors Of The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog In Kansas, Lloyd W. Towers Iii Nov 2011

Alarm-Calling And Response Behaviors Of The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog In Kansas, Lloyd W. Towers Iii

Master's Theses

Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) use alarm calls to warn offspring and other kin of predatory threats. Dialects occur when vocalizations contain consistent differences among populations not isolated by geographic barriers. The Gunnison’s prairie dog (C. gunnisoni) has dialects in its alarm calls. The objectives of my study were to: (1) assess if the black-tailed prairie dog (C. ludovicianus) responded differently to alarm calls from other colonies than it did to alarm calls from its own colony, and (2) detect dialects, if they existed, in the alarm calls of the black-tailed prairie dog. The study included 8 black-tailed prairie dog colonies …

Cytokine Expression By T. Helper Cells Responding To Stress, Dina Zanetti Jan 2005

Cytokine Expression By T. Helper Cells Responding To Stress, Dina Zanetti

Master's Theses

Stress causes alterations to the immune system. These alterations have lead to increased susceptibility to antigens. The present study explores shifts in T helper (TH) cell balance (TH1 and TH2), through their cytokine expression. This study was performed in three phases, and focused mainly on animals subjected to a 10 day a chronic unpredictable stress paradigm. Phase one used ELISAs to confirm the cytokine profile produced from TH 1 and TH2 murine cell-lines. Phase two used SDS PAGE and Western Immunoblotting to show that splenocytes from Long Evan's Hooded rats subjected to the stress paradigm, had decreased in intercellular in …

The Effects Of Ecotourism On Polar Bear Behavior, Gillian Eckhardt Jan 2005

The Effects Of Ecotourism On Polar Bear Behavior, Gillian Eckhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Polar bears spend the majority of their lives on the sea ice, where they gain access to seals and mates. In western Hudson Bay, the sea ice melts for three to four months in the summer, and polar bears there are forced onto land. These bears live on their fat reserves for the duration of the iceless period, until temperatures get colder in the fall and freeze up begins. The aggregation of polar bears near Churchill, Manitoba during the ice free period has led to a thriving tourist industry, with a large influx of tourists visiting Churchill in the fall …

Altered T Cell-Mediated Immunity And Infectious Factors In Autism, Yong Hu May 2000

Altered T Cell-Mediated Immunity And Infectious Factors In Autism, Yong Hu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three major questions were addressed in this dissertation: 1) Do immune abnormalities associated with autism primarily alter CD4+ T cell-mediated or humoral immune responses? 2) Are specific T cell clones expanded in autism? 3) Which, if any, infectious agents play a role in autism?

CD4+ T cell-mediated (Th1) or humoral (Th2) immune responses can be distinguished on the basis of the cytokines expressed. CD4+ T-cells secrete interleukin type 2 (IL-2) and interferon-γ, whereas a Th2 response is associated with secretion of interleukin type 4(IL-4). mRNA extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear nuclear cells (PBMC) showed significantly increased levels of IL-2 and …

Density And Diversity Responses Of Summer Bird Populations To The Structure Of Aspen And Spruce-Fir Communities On The Wasatch Plateau, Utah, Janet Lee Young May 1977

Density And Diversity Responses Of Summer Bird Populations To The Structure Of Aspen And Spruce-Fir Communities On The Wasatch Plateau, Utah, Janet Lee Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Sixteen stands representing a range of structural variation in aspen, mixed aspen-conifer, and spruce-fir communities of the Wasatch Plateau, Utah, were censused by the sample count method. The stands were classified as eleven community types based on the understory dominants or indicator species and the cover types. Fifty bird species were recorded during the two seasons; thirty-two occurred in aspen cover, forty-four in mixed aspen-conifer cover, and twenty-two in spruce-fir.

Comparisons of the composition and density of bird populations were made between uniform stands of a single life form and more structurally complex stands of either single or mixed life …
