Anthranilate Synthetase From Escherichia Coli Sjhi:Purification And Some Properties, Münevver Arisoy

Turkish Journal of Biology

A procedure employed in the purification of anthranilate synhetase of Escherichia coli SJHI is described. The purified anthranilate synthetase appeared to be homogeneous when examined with poliacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Phenly-sepharose CL-4B and Blue dye sepharose were used for purification. A positive correlation was found between purification and ammonium sulfate especially using concentrations greater than 10%. A positive effect 2-Mercapto-ethanol on the enzyme stability was also determined.

Turkish Journal of Biology

: 23 fish with suspected abdominal dropsy were chosen and 13 were observed to be infected with a cyst in the liver. It was detected that the Myxobolus sp. caused the infection. The livers with cysts was excised, crushed in a homogenizer, then suspensions were prepared in water, later centrifuged and finally the spores were counted with the help of a hemocytometer. Among the 13 fish examined, the number of spores in 0.01 gr were determined to be 1.1x10 5 and 1.5x10 6 .

Feeding And Digestion In Larval Decapod Crustaceans, Meti̇n Kumlu Jan 1999

Feeding And Digestion In Larval Decapod Crustaceans, Meti̇n Kumlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

This paper reviews the latest findings in larval feeding and digestion of decapod crustacean larvae. The live feeds and manufactured feeds are discussed in relation with the digestive capability of various decapod crustacean larvae. Although some larvae such as penaeid shrimps are successfully cultured on artifical diets, most of lar-val decapod crustaceans are still heavily dependent on live organisms as food (i. e. micro-algae, Arte-mia). Studies with free-living nematodes as an alternative live feed for penaeid larvae are encouraging. Latest findings have demonstrated that omnivorous larvae (e.g. protozoeal stages of penaeids, Arte-mia, copepods) have high levels of proteolytic enzymes and …

Turkish Journal of Biology

An examination of the relationships between common diseases and polymorphism may facilitate a better understanding of the clinical variability of illnesses and their genetic bases. In this paper, the relationship between blood group and erythrocyte phosphoglucomutase 1 (PGM1) enzyme phenotype and noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) was investigated. The enzyme phenotypes of 205 diabetic individuals were determined using the agglutination method. The results were compared with data from 200 subjects in the control group. When the diabetic individuals and those in the control group were compared according to PGM1 phenotype, no statistically significant difference between the two was observed (p>0.05). …

Turkish Journal of Biology

The cytological properties of megasporogenesis, megagametogenesis, proembryo and endosperm of the Sternbergia lutea(L.) Ker-Fawle ex sprengel ( Amaryllidaceace) plant were observed with a light microscope. It was observed that the ovules are of hemianatropous, bitegmic and pseudocrassinucellate types and the female archesporial cell developed directly into a megasporocyte. While the chalazal diad formed by successive meiosis of megasporocyte degenerates, micropylar diad underwent mitosis simultaneously forming an embryo sac of eight nuclei. Two synergids and an egg cell on the micropyle side, three antipod cell on the chalaza side and a secondary nucleus near the antipods were seen in a mature …

Production Of \Alpha -Galactosidase Usingbacillus Stearothermophilusvar. Caldiloactis C953, E. Esin Kocabaş, Mücahit Di̇zbay

Turkish Journal of Biology

An intracellular, thermostable a-galactosidase (a-D-galactoside galactohydrolase EC 3.2.1.22.) was produced from a strain of Bacillus stearothermophilus var. calidolactis C953. It was found that the presence of NH 4 Cl in the fermentation medium affected microbial growth and that optimum enzyme production occurred with peptone in various sources of nitrogen where NH 4 Cl was used as the main inorganic nitrogen source. After peptone, in decreasing order of enzyme productivity, came tryptone, soybean meal, soya-neutralized peptone and casamino acid. It was determined that, in various carbon sources, raffinose produced the highest a-galactosidase activity, followed by melibiose, D-galactose and molasses, and that …

Analysis Of Binomial Data Obtained From Plant-Tissue-Culture Studiesusing Generalized Linear Models, M. Zi̇ya Firat, Ahmet Onay

Turkish Journal of Biology

In biology, the objective of research scientists is to gain an understanding of biological rela-tionships through experimentation. Statistical analyses are an essential part of biological research. Statistical methods used in biological research range from the very simple to the extremely complex. Consequently, caution should be taken when selecting an appropriate statistical method. Data obtained from plant-cell and tissue-culture studies can generally be placed into one of two or more groups. In other words, a dependent variable consists of placing an observation into a category. The purpose of this paper was to present statistical methods suitable for the analysis of binomial …

Effects Of Cytokines On Cell Cycle, Hati̇ce Güneş Jan 1999

Effects Of Cytokines On Cell Cycle, Hati̇ce Güneş

Turkish Journal of Biology

Cytokines are cellular regulatory proteins. They are secreted by specific cells, which are activated by certain stimuli, in different tissues. Cytokines control numerous biological functions and one of their important effects is on cell division. Although some of the cytokines have a positive effect on the cell cycle, some play a negative role. The positive and negative effects of cytokines depend upon the cell type. In this paper, the moleculer mechanisms of cytokine effects on the cell cycle are examined.

Biodegradation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, İsmai̇l Demi̇r, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ

Turkish Journal of Biology

Polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as petroleum and petroleum derivatives, are widespread organic pollutants entering the environment, chiefly, through oil spills and incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Since most PAHs are persist in the environment for a long period of time and bioaccumulate, they cause environmental pollution and effect biological equilibrium dramatically. Biodegradation of some PAHs by microorganisms has been biochemically and genetically investigated. Gene locations for some of these pathways are frequently found in exrachromosomal elements. Determination, isolation and characterization of microorganisms which participate in the bidegradation of PAHs have great significance in the decontamination of the environment in …
