Although the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is still unknown, it is widely considered that the accumulation of amyloid plaques composed of the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide in the brain is linked to neurodegeneration. Co-localization of viral DNA with Aβ plaques, the association of brain infection and AD, and research indicating the protective effect of Aβ against bacteria and fungi in mice and human cells have led to the hypothesis that Aβ expression and deposition may be central to its function as an antimicrobial peptide (AMP). The Investigation Of Surface Structures On Various Pathogens And Their Interactions With The Human Immune System, Carmen M. Villalobos

The cell surface is the first interface the host immune system encounters and
its investigation has led to a better understanding of cellular biology and types of
pathways that pathogens target in a host cell. The cell surface has evolved to include
many functions such as manipulation of the cytoskeleton, cell signaling, membrane
trafficking, adhesion, and integration into host tissue. The pathogens of interest are
the pathogenic fungus, Candida albicans, and the parasite, Giardia lamblia and we
investigate the consequences of drug treatments on the cell surface, leading to
promising new targets.

The use of pore-forming proteins (PFPs) in nanopore sensing has been fruitful largely due to their nanoscale size and the ease with which protein nanopores can be manipulated and consistently reproduced at a large scale. Nanopore sensing relies heavily on a steady ionic current afforded by rigid nanopores, as the change in current is indicative of analyte detection, revealing characteristics of the analyte such as its relative size, concentration, and charge, as well as the nanopore:analyte interaction. Rigid PFPs have been used in applications such as DNA sequencing, kinetic studies, analyte discrimination, and protein conformation dynamics at the single-molecule level. …

Fossils belonging to the genus Homo, dating as far back as two million years ago, exhibit uniquely efficient features suggesting that early humans had evolved to become exceptional endurance runners. Although they did not have the cushion or stability-control features provided in our modern day running shoes, our early human ancestors experienced far less of the running-related injuries we experience today. The injury rate has been estimated as high as 90% annually for Americans training for a marathon and as high as 79% annually for all American endurance runners. The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides mechanical and biochemical support to tissues and cells. It is crucial for cell attachment, differentiation, and migration, as well as for ailment-associated processes such as angiogenesis, metastases and cancer development. An approach to study these phenomena is through emulation of the ECM by synthetic gels constructed of natural polymers, such as collagen and fibronectin, or simple but tunable materials such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) crosslinked with short peptide sequences susceptible to digestion by metalloproteases and cell-binding domains.
