Hybridization Between The Watersnakes Nerodia Sipedon And Nerodia Fasciata, In The Carolinas: A Morphological And Molecular Approach, Konrad Mebert

A few traditionally applied diagnostic characters of color pattern were compared with an additional set of morphological and genetic characters to evaluate differences between Nerodia sipedon and N. fasciata and to study the dynamics across their hybrid zone in the Carolinas. Many of the morphological characters exhibited significant interspecific differences, although only the number of dorsally complete crossbands (CBa) was diagnostic by itself. A discriminant function analysis of morphological characters was successful in separating both taxa. Species-specific nuclear markers, identified by the AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) technique were nearly fixed and served as diagnostic markers. All molecular phylogenetic methods are based on two assumptions: independence of characters and constant selective pressure. It is well known that these assumptions are often violated, but it is assumed that the methods are robust to such violations. During neurogenesis, glycosylated cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) mediate the growth cone navigation and synapse formation. The structure of neuronal CAMs of Ig superfamily is characterized by the variability and complexity of their extracellular region which contain multiple tandemly arranged domains. The diversity in the structure of the neuronal CAMs is generated by alternative splicing and posttranslational modification, such as differential glycosylation and proteolytic processing.;Tractin is a member of the L1-family of neuronal CAMs in leech. Snapping shrimp in the family Alpheidae are remarkably abundant in coral reef ecosystems worldwide. The second most speciose genus, Synalpheus , includes species usually small and reclusive, and their general morphology is notably uniform, yet the number of species is staggeringly high, as is the intraspecific variability. These features have contributed to a poorly resolved taxonomic status, as evidenced both by recurring lumping and splitting of species and by lack of proper definition of several common species.
