The focus of this dissertation is to investigate the feasibility and safety of rearing black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) on culled potato waste in the presence of pathogens. World food and feed supplies remain insufficient while the demand for alternative protein sources is steadily increasing. Recycling organic waste into ingredients of animal feeds using black soldier larvae, which are omnivorous saprotrophs native to North America, is a rapidly emerging technology that shows great promise for creating circular agricultural systems. In the study of aging, there is a common paradigm that organisms allocate energy between surviving stressful conditions and growth/reproduction (Masoro, 2000). Driving mechanisms that favor the former extend lifespan and protect against cellular stress in different animal systems, including C. elegans. Dietary restriction is one such environmental stressor, which leads to downregulation of the energy-intensive process of mRNA translation (Karol, 2009; Tavernarakis, 2008). When knocked down in adulthood, IFG-1, a component of translation regulation, also protects against cellular stress. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the 8th most common cancer in the United States, with the clear cell variant (ccRCC) being the most prevalent. Over 14,000 people die every year to RCC, with rates continuing to increase with an aging general population. Patients suffering from metastatic RCC (mRCC) have extremely poor prognoses, with a 5-year survival of only 11.2%. Current treatment options include resection of primary lesions, tyrosine kinase inhibition (Sunitinib, Pazopanib), mTOR inhibition (Temsirolimus, Everolimus), and immune checkpoint inhibition (Nivolumab, Atezolizumab). In this study, we compared the osmotic stress response of larval and juvenile blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) at the transcriptomic, metabolomic, and whole organism levels. Blue mussels inhabit coastal areas, where they face climate-induced reductions in nearshore salinity. Despite their ecological and economic importance, scientists do not fully understand the underlying transcriptomic and cellular mechanisms of the osmotic stress response in blue mussels or how the ability to respond to stress changes throughout development. Blue mussels spend the first weeks of life developing through several larval stages in the plankton. These early life history stages are more vulnerable …
