Geographic Variation In The Primary Burrowing Crayfish, Cambarus Dubius Faxon And Cambarus Carolinus (Erichson) (Decapoda: Astacidae) In Tennessee With Notes On Ecology And Life History, Joel P. Dewees
Masters Theses
An investigation of Cambarus dubius and Cambarus carolinus was made in Tennessee to evaluate morphological Variation found in populations of these species and to determine aspects of life history and ecology. Taxonomic position and history of C. carolinus and C. dubius was reviewed and discussed. Three clines or possible subspecies in C. dubius were indicated in Tennessee based on both qualitative and quantitative evidence including: width and length of areola, shape and size of chelae, rostrum, central projection, mesial process, and color.
C. dubius populations from northern West Virginia and southern Pennsylvania were significantly different from populations to the south. …

A Contribution To The Knowledge Of Tennessee Crayfish, Raymond William Bouchard
Doctoral Dissertations
The state of Tennessee has 60 nominal species or sub-species of crayfish within its political boundary or in nearby tributaries that flow into the state. These crayfish reresent five genera. The genera Procambarus and Cambarus are further subdivided into subgenera to show phylogenetic relationships within the genus. Each species is listed under its generic or infrageneric category with the following information: (1) type locality, (2) location of type specimens, (3) range, (4) crayfish associates, (5) life history notes, (6) ecological data, and as needed (7) notes on taxonomic status or information not covered in any of the above six sections. …
The Effects Of Age And Induction On Cockroach Mixed Function Oxidase Activity And Cell Morphology, Richard L. Turnquist
The Effects Of Age And Induction On Cockroach Mixed Function Oxidase Activity And Cell Morphology, Richard L. Turnquist
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Female American cockroaches showed definite age-dependent changes in levels of activity of the microsomal mixed function oxidase chain. Cytochrome P-450 levels, EPN-detoxication, and p-nitroanisole O-demethylation activities were very low in young adult insects but increased steadily reaching a peak at about 100 days in fat body and at about 90 days in midgut and hindgut. The activities then declined rapidly reaching levels of young insects at about 130 to 140 days of age. NADPH-NT-reductase activity was high in young insects and declined during the first few weeks of adult life. This activity too showed a peak at about …
Ecology Of Aroga Websteri Clarke In Curlew Valley, Utah-Idaho, Reed L. Kirkland
Ecology Of Aroga Websteri Clarke In Curlew Valley, Utah-Idaho, Reed L. Kirkland
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The ecology, life history, and population dynamics of the sagebrush defoliator, Aroga websteri Clarke, were studied in the field and laboratory. The defoliator has one generation a year at the Curlew Valley site. It overwintered in the egg stage and passed through five larval instars. Ten parasite species attacked the defoliator at the study site. Four species, Orgilus ferus, Phaeogenes sp., Spilochalcis leptis, and Apanteles cacoeciae, contributed over 75 percent of the total incidence of parasitism. Parasitism ranged from 20 to 76 percent in 1971, but only ranged from 6 to 29 percent in 1972. This decrease …

The Life Cycle Of Lissorchis Heterorchis, Macy And Krygier (1969), Brendan P. H. Onyejekwe
Dissertations and Theses
Many Flumenicola virens (Lea) collected from Crystal Springs Creek and Tualatin River, Portland, Oregon, were found to shed large numbers of a species of microcercous cercariae containing refractile granules. They resembled the cercariae of Triganodistomum mutabile (=Lissorchis mutabile Cort, 1918 as described by Wallace (1939), and subsequent experiments proved that they were the larval stages of what was described by Macy and Krygier (1969), as Lissorchis heterorchis. Encystment of these cercariae was induced experimentally in uninfected adult brown planarians collected partly from Crystal Springs Creek and partly from Carolina Biological Research Station in Gladstone, Portland, Oregon. Adult flukes were obtained …
A Taxonomic Study Of Two Nominal Subspecies Of Pikas (Ochotona Princeps) In The Cascade Mountains Of Oregon, Richard M. Coots
A Taxonomic Study Of Two Nominal Subspecies Of Pikas (Ochotona Princeps) In The Cascade Mountains Of Oregon, Richard M. Coots
Dissertations and Theses
Pikas from four colonies in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon were examined. Two colonies were chosen from within the geographical distribution of two nominal subspecies. A discriminate analysis of morphological measurements taken from the specimens showed that each colony could be distinguished from each other. Each colony studied showed more intra-colony similarity than inter-colony similarity regardless of distance separating the colonies or subspecies designations. The results indicate that the validity of subspecies designations for this species can be questioned.
Operant Conditioning In The Garter Snake (Thamnophis), William A. Schmitz
Operant Conditioning In The Garter Snake (Thamnophis), William A. Schmitz
Masters Theses
Ten garter snakes were tested for runway acquisition, correct turn response in a simple T-maze, or both, for food reinforcement. Seven of seven subjects met criterion for learning to run a 23 inch long alleyway. Mean latency times showed a general decrease over a 23 day period. Five of nine subjects met criterion for learning a correct turn response in a simple T-maze. Subjects mastering the task required from 14-157 trials. One of two subjects met criterion for learning the reverse response of the T-maze exercise, requiring 35 trials. Results are similar to those previously reported for reptiles and other …
A Study Of Thoracic Skeletomusculature In Peracarida (Crustacea), Donna R. Gill
A Study Of Thoracic Skeletomusculature In Peracarida (Crustacea), Donna R. Gill
Masters Theses
Two species of peracarid malacostracans, a mysid, Neomysis americana, and an oniscid isopod, Trachelipus cf. rathkei, were used to study the skeletomusculature system. Serial sections, whole mounts, and gross dissections were made. Coxal promotors and remotors and basal adductors and abductors were the muscle groups examined.
The promotor and remotor muscles of N. americana were found to be numerous, well developed, taking origin primarily from the dorsal thoracic wall, and extending nearly ventrally to insert in the coxa; the adductor muscle and two abductor muscles are weakly developed. The coxa in T. cf. rathkei is incorporated completely …
Preliminary Observations On The Effects Of Treflan To Fishes, P. Bradley Latvaitis
Preliminary Observations On The Effects Of Treflan To Fishes, P. Bradley Latvaitis
Masters Theses
Treflan E.C. is a selective, preemergence, soil incorporated herbicide. Preliminary tests were made to evaluate its effects at concentrations of 0.75, 1.275 and 1.8 p.p.m. on twenty species of fresh water fishes in the laboratory. The herbicide was proven to be a powerful fish toxicant. Centrarchus, Cichlasoma centrarchus, was the most resistant fish tested, while Bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus, was among the least resistant. Treflan E.C. decomposes and degrades rapidly. It was also found to interact with plastics. Further studies are necessary to provide a complete investigation of the effects of Treflan on Fishes.
Home Range And Movement Of Fox Squirrels In East Central Illinois, Michael D. Sliva
Home Range And Movement Of Fox Squirrels In East Central Illinois, Michael D. Sliva
Masters Theses
Home ranges and movements were determined for 11 fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) and analyzed with respect to the distribution of mast trees and den trees on a 12¼ acre wooded plot in east central Illinois. Average home range size for all squirrels was 0.9 acres. The home range of adult squirrels averaged 1.5 acres while juveniles averaged 0.8 acres. Females had larger home ranges (1.4 acres) than males (0.6 acres). The average distance moved within the home range was 360 feet for all squirrels. The average distances moved by adults and juveniles was nearly the same (275-280 feet), …
