This report conveys the results of a study of certain leased oyster grounds in the vicinity of the US 17 Bridge across Chuckatuck Creek. The study was made by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and School of Marine Science of the College of William and Mary for the Department of Highways and Transportation, Suffolk, Virginia. In 1975 a study was completed by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) entitled "An Environmental Assessment of the Hampton .River and Vicinity." This was for federal project I-64 (142)240 - State Project 0064-114-103. It was completed for Sverdrup and Parcel Consulting Engineers, St. Louis, Missouri. A part of this report consisted of an .evaluation of the molluscan resource in a zone 600 feet wide on either side of the existing bridge. Leased as well as public bottoms were studied.

A Study Of Oyster Ground Leases Adjacent To The James River Bridge, Newport News, Virginia, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Two leases of oyster planting ground adjacent to the James River Bridge at the Newport News end were studied in December, 1978. Sampling revealed that one area contained large quantities of oysters while, on the other area, oysters were scarce. Comparison with sample results and fathometer-traced bottom profiles taken in a 1976 study of the same areas indicates a close similarity.

Analysis of historical nutrient data for Lake Mead indicates that the fertility of the reservoir has decreased which may be the cause for a corresponding decline in the largemouth bass population. However, it appears that fertility can be manipulated by altering the operation of the dam. The depletion of nutrients in the euphotic zone by phytoplankton and subsequent accumulation in the hypolimnion during summer and fall provide a natural nutrient gradient from which water of varying fertility can be drawn for discharge. No significant differences in macro- and micromorphology were found between the parasitic stolon and free-living polyps of Polypodium sp. obtained from infected eggs of the North American acipenseriform fish Polyodon spathula and corresponding developmental stages of Polypodium hydriforme Ussov, parasitic in the Volga sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus). Therefore, both the American and the European forms of Polypodium belong to the species P. hydriforme Ussov

Three major diseases of oysters have been monitored in Virginia estuaries for 2-3 decades. Dermocystidium marinum, causing a warm-season wasting disease, was discovered in Virginia in 1950 and continues actively to kill oysters where beds or populations are found in high salinity waters ( >15%). This disease spreads by close proximity of dying oysters to other oysters, hence each isolated bed must be sampled in early fall annually to document activity of the pathogen. Control involves avoiding infected seed oysters, cleaning beds of all oysters after harvest, and isolation of new beds. A new pathogen, Minchinia nelsoni (MSX), caused …

A mechanical oyster harvester was designed, constructed and tested in Chesapeake Bay,Va.,from 1972 to 1976. It couples the escalator system of a conventional Maryland soft clam dredge with a newly designed head. Revolving spring-loaded teeth attached to two drums in the head pull or rake oysters from the bottom and horizontal water jets and the action of the revolving teeth impel the oysters onto a conveyor belt which carries the oysters to the boat.

Description And Occurrence Of Vexillifer Larvae Of Echiodon (Pisces, Carapidae) In The Western North-Atlantic And Notes On Other Carapid Vexillifers, Je Olney, Df Markle

Five hundred twenty-two vexillifers of an unnamed species of the carapid genus Echiodon are reported from ichthyoplankton collections made in the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Middle Atlantic Bight, Sargasso Sea, and Scotian Shelf. These are compared with 36 vexi1lifers and one juvenile of the only other known western Atlantic carapine, Campus ber- I/ludensis, as well as two small unidentified western Atlantic vexillifers, and eight eastern Pacific vexillifers of E. exsiliul/l. Vexillum placement relative to anal-fin origin, myomeres, and vertebral centra appears to be a useful character for separating Echiodon vexillifers from other western Atlantic carapids. An underwater microphone has been developed to detect shell material on the bottom. The system is simple to use and easily constructed. It consists of a microphone encased in a PVC tube and suspended from an A-frame which is towed over the bottom. It is being used along with other methods to chart oyster bottoms in Virginia.

Larvae of the predatory crustacean Squilla empusa were collected from the plankton in Chesapeake Bay and reared in the laboratory to permit description of the pelagic stages before the postlarval stage.

Characters such as rostral length and spinulation, carapace spinulation, relative size of telson, overall body size, and appearance probably are of more value for specific than for generic identification. The presence or absence of teeth on the dactylus of the second maxilliped, the presence or absence of a spine on the basis of the second maxilliped, and the number of epipods may be useful characters in determining generic alliances …

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through·early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.

Otter trawl cruises were conducted off the middle Atlantic coast of the U. S. from 1971 to 1975. More than 50,000 specimens of demersal fishes were captured during this program at depths of 75 m to 3000 m. Species assemblages were distributed along a coenocline with bathymetric areas of rapid faunal change (anantoclines) and of more gradual faunal change (aganoclines). Between 75 and 3000 m anantoclines were found at 150 to 200 m, 400 to 600 m, 900 to 1000 m, 1350 to 1500 m, and 1900 to 2100 m. Sampling of the shellfish resource in the lower part of Brick Kiln (or Wythe) Creek was conducted by personnel of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science during August, October and November of 1978. Live oysters.were found in several places from the bridge downstream t9 the mouth. Observations indicate that the oyster beds here have average growth and normal rates of survival; recruitment is occurring. No other species of commercially valuable shellfish was found.
