Deep-sea red crabs were collected from demersal trawl surveys of Norfolk-Canyon and an adjacent open slope area in the Chesapeake Bight of the western North Atlantic Ocean. The surveys were made in each of four seasons over a period of three years. The 2539 red crabs caught ranged from 16mm to 143 mm in carapace length (CL). Relationships between CL and carapace width (CW) were derived for 308 males and for 269 females. Wet weight to CL relationships were derived for 238 males and for 142 females. Cool weather and two northeast storms, in April and May, are believed by Rappahannock River crab fishermen and shedders to have caused a three to four week delay in crabs reaching the early peeler stages of development. Fishermen are still setting crab pound nets (=peeler traps, fykes). Fishermen recall that prior to 12-15 years ago the first "run" of peeler crabs occurred on the full moon of late April or early May. Recently the "runs" have been later, but never as late as this year.

Consultation and Coordination During Preparation of the DEIS DOE, in developing the scope of work for the Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes transmission study, recognized the need for a great deal of consultation and coordination. Consultation, coordination, and public involvement were integral parts of the study design. As part of this effort, extent of experience in northern New England and location were important factors in selecting consultants for various portions of the study. In recent study of nonhunting mortality of wild waterfowl, Stout and Cornwell (1976) identified weather as one of the more significant causal agents. This paper describes an occurrence of spectacular avian mortality caused by a severe thunderstorm in North Dakota on 8 September 1977.

The storm was associated with a low pressure system in South Dakota. It developed about Noon CST north of Dickinson, traveled eastward and generally north of highway 1-94, and continued into Minnesota at about 5:00 p.m. CST. Ichthyoplankton sampling gear is reviewed and evaluated with emphasis on power plant impact assessment. Effects of biotic and abiotic factors on gear accuracy are discussed. Difficulties associated with obtaining representative samples from patchy population distributions are acknowledged. A listing of commonly used sampling gear has been compiled and indexed by ecosystem. Meter nets and variations of meter nets are the most widely used gear for sampling fish eggs and larvae. Comparative gear evaluation has been performed based on information compiled in the report. Mycobacteria are widely distributed in nature. They are abundant in the soil, on the surface of plants, on the skin of vertebrates, in human food (e.g., milk and butter), and in animal feeds. Most mycobacteria are saprophytic, but some species are highly pathogenic and cause diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy in humans, and similar diseases in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes.

Mycobacteria that cause diseases of fishes differ considerably from those that cause diseases in humans and other mammals. Therefore, to avoid association between tuberculosis in mammals and mycobacterial infections in fishes, it is better to call the …

The growth and fattening of the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791), has long been of interest to oyster biologists since the market value of oysters is directly related to the quantity and quality of "meat" obtained per bushel ( = 35.2 L) of harvested oysters. From 7 March 1978 through 14 March 1978, an area of the bottom in the York River around Croaker Landing was studied to define the existing shellfish resource. The study was conducted at the request of the Division of Parks of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Economic Development in conjunction with the construction of the York River State Park. Comparison of this study with a post-dredging assessment will provide a measure of the possible impact of dredging activities on the surrounding bottom.

The amateur fishery in south-western Australia for marron, Cherax tenuimanus, the third largest Australian and world freshwater crayfish, is described, including the history of management regulations and the legal methods of capture of marron (scoop nets, drop nets and snares) in rivers and dams. Catch and effort data were obtained from research log books over the period 1971 to 1976. From the inception of the Inland Fisherman's License, largely intended for marron, in 1970, the number of licenses rose steeply from 6,500 to 20,000 by 1975. The calculated total annual catch by the 1974-75 and 1975-76 seasons was about 470,000 …
