Channeled Whelk Assessment, R. A. Fisher, Richard B. Robins Jr. Jan 2009

Channeled Whelk Assessment, R. A. Fisher, Richard B. Robins Jr.

Reports

The channeled whelk, Busycotypus canaliculatus, was sampled from three in‐shore commercially harvested resource areas in the US Mid‐Atlantic: off Ocean City, Maryland (OC); Eastern Shore of Virginia (ES); and Virginia Beach, Virginia (VB). The largest whelk measured 230mm shell length (SL) and was recorded from OC. Mean SL was largest in OC site (158.1mm), followed by ES (137.6mm), then VB (132.4mm). Both VB and ES populations showed a unimodal length‐frequency distribution with the single peak at shell length less than MLS for those regions, while OC population showed a bimodal (two peaks) distribution with the smaller peak at shell length …

Characterization Of Bycatch And Regulatory Discards In Virginia's Spring Striped Bass Gill Net Fisheries And Analysis Of Gear Alterations On Cpue And Bycatch Composition, George Earl Trice Jan 2009

Characterization Of Bycatch And Regulatory Discards In Virginia's Spring Striped Bass Gill Net Fisheries And Analysis Of Gear Alterations On Cpue And Bycatch Composition, George Earl Trice

Reports

The striped bass fishery is of great economic importance to Virginia's commercial finfishermen and anchored gill nets are the predominant gear used in both coastal and estuarine waters. Unfortunately, these nets have the highest rate of Atlantic Sturgeon bycatch (85%) compared to other Virginia gear types (NMFS) and the second largest bycatch recorded by NMFS Northeast Observer Network coastally. High Atlantic sturgeon interaction rates could result in seriously restrictive regulations being imposed on the fishery or even complete closure, once Atlantic sturgeon are listed under the Endangered Species Act as has been proposed. Recognizing this important threat to the fishery, …

Developing Both Commodity And Niche Markets For Cow Nose Ray, L. D. Amory & Co. Inc Jan 2009

Developing Both Commodity And Niche Markets For Cow Nose Ray, L. D. Amory & Co. Inc

Reports

Our project was to continue developing a three-tiered market for ray. The market tiers on which some work has already been done are: a high end domestic market with an emphasis on marketing to distributors; a commodity market for the foreign export of container sized loads of ray wings; and a bait market for the parts of the ray not used for human consumption.
