Cassin’S Sparrow (Aimophila Cassinii) Status Assessment And Conservation Plan, Janet M. Ruth Jan 2000

Cassin’S Sparrow (Aimophila Cassinii) Status Assessment And Conservation Plan, Janet M. Ruth

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Cassin’s Sparrow (Aimophila cassinii) is a grassland species endemic to the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. Its behavior and ecology have been shaped by these arid ecosystems and the health of its populations is dependent on the availability of grasslands that contain a shrub component. Populations of many grassland birds have experienced dramatic declines due to the loss and deterioration of grassland habitats, and there has been concern about the trends in Cassin’s Sparrow populations. Without better information about population trends, ecology, and effects of management activities, and without a stronger emphasis on grassland management, Cassin’s Sparrows and other grassland …

Effects To Listed Species From Operations Of The Federal Columbia River Power System

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has reviewed the biological assessment (BA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents dated December, 1999 submitted by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), Corps of Engineers (Corps), and the Bureau of Reclamation (Bureau) (also referred to as action agencies) regarding operations of the Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS). The action agencies’ request for formal consultation was received in December, 1999. This document represents the Service’s biological opinion of the effects of the proposed action on two listed fish species: the endangered Kootenai River white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus); and the threatened …

Review Of Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition, Gerald W. Esch Jan 2000

Review Of Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition, Gerald W. Esch

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Thirty-two years ago, Glenn Hoffman published the first version of this book. I remember it well because I was teaching a field parasitology course at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station of Michigan State University, and depended to a very great extent on various fish parasites to use for examples in class study. As a result, the book was canonical as a source of information, and it continued to serve me well as I moved elsewhere in subsequent years. I know from personal knowledge that others who worked with fish parasites were equally served by the book. My copy of the …

Review Of Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition, Wilmer A. Rodgers Jan 2000

Review Of Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition, Wilmer A. Rodgers

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

In this second edition, the author uses the traditional better-known taxonomy, although a table listing the contemporary (or future) classification is presented in the foreword. The beginning of the book covers the public health aspects of fish parasites, and discusses methods of examining and collecting fish, and then preserving and making permanent preparations. These sections will be very helpful to students and researchers, as are the sections that list parasites by location in fish. The next sections present major groups of parasites and detailed genera and species. Drawings and photographs make identification relatively easy. An important addition to this second …

Non-Native Species Interactions: Management Implications To Aid In Recovery Of The Colorado Pikeminnow Ptychocheilus Lucius And Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen Texanus In The San Juan River, Co-Nm-Ut, James E. Brooks, Michael J. Buntjer, Jude R. Smith Jan 2000

Non-Native Species Interactions: Management Implications To Aid In Recovery Of The Colorado Pikeminnow Ptychocheilus Lucius And Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen Texanus In The San Juan River, Co-Nm-Ut, James E. Brooks, Michael J. Buntjer, Jude R. Smith

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

As part of the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (SJRIP), investigations of non-native fishes were conducted during 1991-1997 to characterize interactions with native fishes. The impacts of non-native fish species on natives has often been identified as a key impact, along with habitat alteration, that facilitates loss of native biological diversity. In the San Juan River, the endangered Colorado pikeminnow Ptychocheilus lucius and razorback sucker Xyrauchen texanus, as well as the other members of the native fish community, are the focus of the SJRIP. A major component of native fish recovery efforts in the San Juan River …

Fish Tales: More Trout To Catch In Utach Thanks To Federal-State Cooperation, John Seals, Tim Miles Jan 2000

Fish Tales: More Trout To Catch In Utach Thanks To Federal-State Cooperation, John Seals, Tim Miles

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

As reciprocity to Utah Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) for its help last year feeding and hauling young fish, the Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery is providing more fish for Utah waters, which means more trout dinners for recreational anglers.

The DWR is currently busy hauling about 260,000 rainbow trout fingerlings – roughly 8600 pounds of fish – from Jones Hole to lakes throughout the state, including Steinaker Reservoir near Vernal, and Mantua and East Canyon Reservoirs near Ogden. About half of the fish are going into Scofield Reservoir in Carbon County, adding to 270,000 Jones Hole trout that were …

Selenium In A Wyoming Grassland Community Receiving Wastewater From An In Situ Uranium Mine, Pedro Ramirez Jr., Brad Rodgers Jan 2000

Selenium In A Wyoming Grassland Community Receiving Wastewater From An In Situ Uranium Mine, Pedro Ramirez Jr., Brad Rodgers

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Water, soil, vegetation, grasshoppers (Family Acrididae), bird eggs and bird livers collected at a 23.5 hectare (58 acres) grassland irrigated with wastewater from an in situ uranium mine (Study Area) and a reference site in 1998 were analyzed for selenium and other trace elements. Bird surveys were conducted at the irrigated grassland at the in situ uranium mine to determine species use, relative abundance and behavior. We observed 23 species of birds using the Study Area. Western meadowlarks (Sturnella neglecta), red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), lark buntings (Calamospiza melanocorys) and horned larks (Eremophila alpestris …

Reproductive Success Of Piping Plovers On Alkali Lakes In North Dakota And Montana, Robert K. Murphy, Michael J. Rabenberg, Marriah L. Sondreal, Bruce R. Casler, Debra A. Guenther Jan 2000

Reproductive Success Of Piping Plovers On Alkali Lakes In North Dakota And Montana, Robert K. Murphy, Michael J. Rabenberg, Marriah L. Sondreal, Bruce R. Casler, Debra A. Guenther

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Low reproductive success is thought to be a chief cause of the steady decline in numbers of piping plover (Charadrius melodus) that nest in the northern Great Plains. Surprisingly, few reproductive success data are published from alkali lakes in the region, where most breeding pairs of piping plover nest. During 1994 to 1997 we measured nest success and fledging rates of piping plovers at 32 alkali lakes across northwestern North Dakota and northeastern Montana, at the center of the species' breeding range in the Great Plains. Annual nest success and fledging rates averaged 38% (Mayfield estimate; 20 to …

Avian Mortality At Communication Towers: A Review Of Recent Literature, Research, And Methodology, Paul Kerlinger Jan 2000

Avian Mortality At Communication Towers: A Review Of Recent Literature, Research, And Methodology, Paul Kerlinger

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

A review of the recent literature and research in progress on bird collisions with
communication towers was contracted by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In the five year period 1995 through 1999, very little research was published or conducted that is relevant to the bird-communication tower collision problem. It seems that since the major reviews of the late 1970s and early 1980s, few researchers and others have been interested in researching the problem. Before 1985, there was an enormous body of literature, mostly anecdotal that has not been examined analytically.

For the current review,, a standard literature search …

The Lynx Conservation Assessment and Strategy was developed to provide a consistent and effective approach to conserve Canada lynx on federal lands in the conterminous United States. The USDA Forest Service, USDI Bureau of Land Management, and USDI Fish and Wildlife Service initiated the Lynx Conservation Strategy Action Plan in spring of 1998.

The lynx has been proposed for listing as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (Federal Register, Volume 63, No. 130, July 8, 1998). In the proposed rule, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service concluded that the population in the conterminous United States is threatened by …

Contaminant Residue Analysis Of Fish Tissues From Marais Des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge - Kansas, John F. Miesner Jan 2000

Contaminant Residue Analysis Of Fish Tissues From Marais Des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge - Kansas, John F. Miesner

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) was added to the National Wildlife Refuge system in 1992. The Refuge occupies approximately 2,550 ha of bottomland hardwoods habitats along the Marais des Cygnes River in Linn County, Kansas.

During public involvement in acquisition planning, the Service committed to opening the Refuge to recreational fishing. There are several water bodies on the Refuge which would provide recreational fishing opportunities. These include abandoned coal strip mines, small man-made farm ponds, and the Marais des Cygnes River and several tributaries to the river. Fish have been established in the coal mine and farm ponds …
