Aquaculture is a large part of the food production sector which is greatly expanding. One of the largest losses in aquaculture is due to pathogens. Current solutions for protecting farmed finfish from pathogens can be very expensive with variable efficiency. Current disease prevention strategies include vaccination. Types of vaccines include immersion vaccines, feed vaccines, and injectable vaccines. The most popular solution is oil-based injectable vaccines due to its protection. However, the oil-based adjuvant used in most of these formulations causes adverse reactions in the fish including reduced growth. These vaccines require multiple administrations throughout the fish’s lifetime causing unwanted handling …

Ocean Renewable Power Company, LLC (ORPC) deployed a TidGen® Power System in outer Cobscook Bay, Maine, as the first stage of the Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project (CBTEP) (Figure 1). This installation requires monitoring to assess potential effects of the TidGen® Power System on the marine environment. ORPC’s marine life monitoring plan has two parts: 1) Fisheries Monitoring and 2) Marine Life Interaction Monitoring.

There is conflicting evidence concerning the negative effects of high concentrations of dissolved oxygen on nitrifying bacteria. This project was developed to determine what happens to an established slime layer in a fixed-film, flow-through bio-filter, exposed to oxygen supersaturation. Specific objectives were to determine qualitatively and quantitatively whether the treatment is actually beneficial after acclimation, and whether rapid fluctuations in DO are detrimental to an acclimated culture.

This report describes the development and testing of a new material for use as a filter medium in recirculating aquaculture systems and other water quality control situations. The material consists of a combination of activated carbon and a hydrophilic urethane foam in a homogeneous matrix. Its physical properties relevant to filtration were determined. It was then tested for its ability to remove various dissolved organic compounds and inorganic nitrogenous compounds in the form of a synthetic waste-water containing ammonia and nitrite. The Dickey Lincoln School Lakes Project is a proposed multipurpose project located on the upper reaches of the St. John River in Aroostook County, Maine. Development would consist of two dams with associated reservoirs and hydroelectric generating facilities, five dikes and transmission lines. The regional scope of this study (a three state area of approximately 33,000 square miles) necessitated an initial investigation to determine what data was available. Known and potential sources of data were identified through the use of the Environmental Data Reconnaissance Report* prepared by Comitta Frederick Associates for the United States Depart-ment of the Interior in March 1976. The collected data was then analyzed for its accuracy, reliability, mappability and compatibility with the scope of this study.

This report summarizes the results of system planning, environmental, and location studies for transmission facilities associated with the proposed Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project in northern Maine. The studies recommend the construction of two 345-kV transmission circuits from a substation near the project along a route through western Maine into northern New Hampshire and Vermont. This introduction of the St. John River watershed is situated in a transitional zone between the Boreal Forest Formation and the Eastern Deciduous Forest Formation. Second-growth forests representative of these two ecosystems cover extensive areas of the project site. The boreal forest forms a broad transcontinental belt in northern North America and Eurasia, with southern montane extensions. This northern forest is characterized by evergreen, coniferous trees, predominately spruce-fir The eastern deciduous forest, composed of broad-leaved hardwoods, extends throughout the eastern United States except Florida (Dasmann, 1968; Oosting, 1956).
