For a number of years silver perch, a species native to the Murray-Darling river system of eastern Australia, has been allowed into Western Australia for the purpose of stocking rural, inland farm dams. Improts have only been allowed under licence, subject to disease-free certification and on the basis of fish being placed into impounded waters. The development of commercial aquaculture of a non-endemic species such as silver perch raises a number of important issues relating to tanslocation.
