Capital Requirements On A Grade A Dairy Farm, Everett E. Carrell
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if it was possible to secure a satisfactory return on capital invested in converting a cotton farm to a modern dairy, cotton, and hog system of farming. One of the eight farm management units located on the Ames Plantation in West Tennessee which was supervised by the University of Tennessee in cooperation with the Hobart Ames Foundation was used in the study. The unit was one formerly rented to a tenant for a standing rent of two bales of cotton. A new farming system was developed providing for a 50-50 sharing of …
A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell
A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell
Doctoral Dissertations
Three of the basic phenomena comprising the meiotic process are synapsis, crossingover, and disjunction. It is generally conceded that some form of pairing must precede crossingover; that the crossingover process occurs prior to disjunction; and that disjunction implies a previous association of elements. Construction of a model describing the causal relations among the three events might be expected to be fairly simple, since the possibilities are limited. Yet, no model has been proposed that is consistent with all the genetic data.

Studies On The Morphology And Growh Rate Of The Cestode Hymenolepis Microstoma After Gamma Irradiation Of The Cysticercoids And Eggs, Huldrich H. Kuhlman
Studies On The Morphology And Growh Rate Of The Cestode Hymenolepis Microstoma After Gamma Irradiation Of The Cysticercoids And Eggs, Huldrich H. Kuhlman
Doctoral Dissertations
From the literature on effects of radiation on mammals, insects, and other organisms, it appears that radiation produces abnormalities chiefly by destroying or inhibiting growing cells and tissues. The effects on length of the worms may be due to reduction in cell population responsible for growth. The presence of certain morphological abnormalities which have been observed, particularly those which have been characterized by the absence of one or more reproductive organs, might also be attributed to a change in the growth or embryological apparatus and that radiation only serves to increase the frequency of these disturbances.

Meiosis, Mitosis, And The Induction Of Chromosomal Abnormalities In Hymenolepis Diminuta By Gamma Rays, Raymond Louis Kisner
Doctoral Dissertations
Summary
A growth rate study for H. diminuta in ten worm infestations was attempted. The desired number of worms was not recovered from enough rats to determine a reliable growth curve. It was discovered that worm length varied within rats and between rats of comparable sex, age, weight, worm burden, and genetic background.
Shellfish Resources Of Washington, Robert Grant Levens
Shellfish Resources Of Washington, Robert Grant Levens
Graduate Student Research Papers
This paper will explore the salt water shellfish resources of Washington State. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the Pacific and Olympia Oysters, the Dungeness Crab, the research being done at Quilcene, and the lesser varieties of shellfish, including shrimp and the hardshell species of clams. The latter includes the littleneck, butter, Manila, and geoduc clams. A major emphasis will be the commercial importance of the shellfish, but the sportsman and the expanding role of Washington as a summer recreation area will not be overlooked.

Effect Of Feeding Various Hay-Concentrate Rations On The Production And Composition Of Milk, K. C. Mathew
Masters Theses
Introduction: The composition of cow's milk and the variations to which it is subjected are questions of great importance. This is true both from the standpoint of physiology and from the standpoint of human nutrition. For these reasons the composition of milk has been subjected to careful investigation for a long time.
Factors Affecting The Performance Of Broilers, G. R. Nair
Factors Affecting The Performance Of Broilers, G. R. Nair
Masters Theses
The efficiency of broiler production has increased greatly in recent years and can be attributed to advancements in the areas of breeding, management, nutrition, and disease control. No single factor in any one of these areas can be said to account for the major share of this increased efficiency but rather it is the combination of a large number of factors such as breeding techniques, and breed improvement, of improved management practices, and of advances in nutrition and disease control.
The optimum combination of conditions or factors for broiler production is seldom, if ever, realized. Information which might have been …

The Sexual Behavior And Systematic Position Of The Hooded Merganser, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Sexual Behavior And Systematic Position Of The Hooded Merganser, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
It has been over 15 years since Delacour and Mayr (1945) first urged that the mergansers (Mergus)and the goldeneye-Bufflehead group (Bucephala) be merged into a single tribe (Mergini) rather than being maintained in separate subfamilies (Aythyinae and Merginae). Their reasons for this change were several, and included such points as the similarities in the downy young, female color patterns, occurrence of wild hybrids between the two genera, and tracheal structure. Indeed, except for the shape of the bill in these two groups there is no good means of distinguishing the two subfamilies. As Delacour and Mayr pointed out, bill shape …

A Morphological Study Of Some Larval Ticks Of The Genus Dermacentor With Emphasis On Structures Of Possible Taxonomic Importance, Richard Grant Robertson
Theses and Dissertations
This study was undertaken to evaluate and determine morphological characteristics which might prove valuable in the identification of the larvae of the following species of ticks of the genus Dermacentor Koch: D. albipictus Packard, D. andersoni Stiles, D. hunteri Bishop, D. parumapertus Neuman, and D. variabilis Say. A taxonomic key for the identification of all of the Canadian and United States species of the larvae of the genus Dermacentor Koch cannot be constructed until specimens of D. halli and D. occidentalis have been examined. However, the followng conclusions were reached regarding the species studied: 1. Position of setae is of …
Commercial Supplement Versus A Home-Mixed Supplement Plus Corn Free Choice For Finishing Swine, Felix Eugene Knight
Commercial Supplement Versus A Home-Mixed Supplement Plus Corn Free Choice For Finishing Swine, Felix Eugene Knight
Masters Theses
(From Introduction)
In Tennessee there are approximately 1,182,000 hogs reported on farms, valued at $33,214,000. In Rutherford County, there are approximately 22,500 swine reported on farms valued at $600,000.
Swine suffer from nutritient deficiencies much more frequently than cattle or sheep, chiefly because they cannot utilize large amounts of roughages. They grow much more rapidly than do cattle or sheep and the B-complex vitamins are synthesized in their digestive tracts to a much less extent than in the four-fold stomach of ruminants.
Swine production in Middle Tennessee is becoming more important with nine counties selling pigs through feeder …

Observations Of Pituitary Hormone Injections And Ripening Of Fish, D. K. Kaushik
Observations Of Pituitary Hormone Injections And Ripening Of Fish, D. K. Kaushik
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A dependable source of quality fish spawn is a fundamental prerequisite for fish culture development. This is especially important inasmuch as most of the cultivable species do not breed in confined waters. Also, sport fisheries are gaining greater popularity, and subsequently the fish supply is being taxed. Still another need for fish spawn is in the ever increasing demand for bait minnows. Also, the construction of more and more dams has resulted in insurmountable obstacles for ascending and descending fish, which may ultimately result in complete destruction of some fisheries. Thus some measure of artificial propagation will have to be …

A Histological Study Of The Postnatal Development Of The Bovine Testis, R. G. Fossland, A. B. Schultze
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
A limited number of detailed studies on the development of the bovine testis from birth to sexual maturity have been reported. Further study of bovine testis development appears desirable to furnish additional observations and to note variations that may occur during the developmental process. Information on the process of spermatogenesis should furnish a basis for experimental work designed to promote increased spermatogenic activity in the postpubertal testis as well as for work directed toward promoting complete spermatogenesis at an earlier than usual age. This report is a study of the histological picture of the testes from 56 bulls varying from …
