As manufacturing industries become more cognizant of the ecological effects that their firms have on the surrounding environment, their waste streams are increasingly becoming viewed not as materials in need of disposal, but rather as resources that can be reused, recycled, or reprocessed into valuable products. Within the food processing sector there are many examples of value-added use of processing residues, although many of these focus solely on utilization as livestock feed ingredients. Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) has been approved by the Natural Resource Conservation Service as a receiver crop for N in swine lagoon effluent applied to spray fields. However, its efficacy as a N receiver crop depends on the sensitivity of symbiotic N2 fixation to inhibition by N in the applied effluent. The objectives of this study were to use a 15N natural abundance method to (i) assess the degree of inhibition of symbiotic N2 fixation in soybean by applied effluent N and (ii) determine the quantity of effluent N removed from the soil in harvested seed of nodulating soybean. …

The swine industry has grown rapidly in North Carolina in the past decade, with the majority of the growth occurring in a few counties in the Coastal Plain region of the state. With this expansion has come the problem of swine waste disposal. Mr. Blevins, a local farmer in this region, has been raising swine since 1985. The swine waste on his farm is collected in an anaerobic lagoon and then irrigated onto a bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon(L.) Pers.) pasture where cattle are fed using intensive rotational grazing techniques. A study of Mr. Blevins' farm revealed very high nitrate concentrations in …
