Leadership In Kansas Agriculture: Examining Organization Ceos’ Styles And Skills, Brad A. Parker Mba, Cae, Jason D. Ellis Ph.D., Duke Rogers Ph.D.
Online Journal of Rural Research & Policy
This project’s primary purpose was to identify and describe the leadership styles and skills emphases of current Kansas agricultural organization chief executive officers. Twenty-three current CEOs participated and were described in terms of their leadership styles, leadership-skills emphases, and demographics. Overall, they appeared to be rather “middle of the road” on each of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire’s nine leadership scales. Leadership styles were not significantly affected by demographics, with the exception of formal leadership training affecting transactional leadership and education level, organizational category, and staff size affecting passive-avoidant leadership. Participants generally rated the 50 leadership skills as important. Leadership styles …
Exploring Multi-Year Soybean Yield Trial Data In South Dakota Environments, Jixiang Wu, Jianli Qi, Jonathan Kleinjan
Exploring Multi-Year Soybean Yield Trial Data In South Dakota Environments, Jixiang Wu, Jianli Qi, Jonathan Kleinjan
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
Crop performance test (CPT) is a common practice to evaluate yield performance and adaptability of each cultivar. In this study, we combined 16 years of soybean CPT data, which included six representative locations, three major maturity groups, and over 1000 cultivars, to determine some patterns associated with yield production. As expected, the repeatability for these cultivars in trial over years was very low. Thus, the data processing in this study was focused on descriptive statistics regarding time, location, and seed supplier and several linear model analyses. The results will be presented during the conference.

Gender And Gmos: Understanding Floridians Attitudes Toward Gmos Through The Lens Of Social Judgment Theory, Joy N. Rumble, Lisa K. Lundy, Brittany Martin, Sandra Anderson
Gender And Gmos: Understanding Floridians Attitudes Toward Gmos Through The Lens Of Social Judgment Theory, Joy N. Rumble, Lisa K. Lundy, Brittany Martin, Sandra Anderson
Journal of Applied Communications
Social judgement theory was utilized to determine if men and women showed different acceptance of messages about genetically modified (GM) foods. The primary objective was to determine if females and males had a different latitude of acceptance toward statements about GM foods. Researchers found significant differences between males and females with more males accepting messages about GM foods than females. Additionally, there were several statements with wide latitudes of acceptance across genders. These statements represent a common ground and are a good starting point for conversations about GM food.
Using Cognitive Dissonance To Communicate With Hypocrites About Water Conservation And Climate Change, Melissa R. Taylor, Alexa J. Lamm, Lisa K. Lundy
Using Cognitive Dissonance To Communicate With Hypocrites About Water Conservation And Climate Change, Melissa R. Taylor, Alexa J. Lamm, Lisa K. Lundy
Journal of Applied Communications
The effects of climate change can be mitigated by altering human behavior related to water conservation; however, many who are aware of climate change are not aligning their behavior to curb the impact. This research sought to explore the relationship between citizens’ beliefs, attitudes and behaviors regarding water conservation and their knowledge and beliefs regarding climate change to guide the development of effective communication campaigns focused on water conservation. Using cognitive dissonance theory and an adapted environmental attitudes and behavior quartet, this research focused on individuals who demonstrated high levels of climate change knowledge but did not engage in positive …

Modeling Potato Psyllid Occurrence Using Sticky Trap Data For The Management Of Zebra Chip Disease, William J. Price, Erik J. Wenninger, Bahman Shafii Ph.D.
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
Zebra chip disease (ZC) is a disease of potato which produces striped necrotic patterns that become pronounced when fried, making potato products such as chips and fries unmarketable. The disease is associated with a bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum (Lso) and is transmitted by the potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli. An important aspect in managing this disease is the modeling and prediction of potato psyllid occurrence. In this study, potato psyllid numbers were monitored regularly across the southern Idaho region. This unique data set encompasses psyllid counts, collected by multiple sticky traps, set up at 98 growing sites over the growing …
Evaluating Adaptions Of Soft Red Winter Wheat In Eastern Region Of Usa, Dilmini Alahakoon, Anne Fennell, Jixiang Wu
Evaluating Adaptions Of Soft Red Winter Wheat In Eastern Region Of Usa, Dilmini Alahakoon, Anne Fennell, Jixiang Wu
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
Identification of winter wheat cultivars that are highly adapted to a wide range of environmental conditions is one of the most important wheat research objectives. Multi-environment crop trials under diverse environments is a commonly used practice to evaluate yield stability. For example, uniform eastern and southern red soft winter wheat nursery trials are conducted annually. However, locations and cultivars may vary from year to year and may cause yield stability analysis to be statistically challenging. In this study, we evaluated cultivars that were widely adapted to eastern production areas and those that were specifically adapted to other environments. We used …
Simulation Comparison Of Methods To Estimate Confidence Intervals Of The Mitigated Fraction, Kenneth W. Wakeland, Brian Fergen
Simulation Comparison Of Methods To Estimate Confidence Intervals Of The Mitigated Fraction, Kenneth W. Wakeland, Brian Fergen
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
In the area of veterinary medicine, efficacy studies are conducted to support licensure of vaccines. Such studies are typically designed to assess a vaccine's ability to prevent or mitigate clinical disease. For example, reduction of duration/severity of clinical signs or the severity of lung lesions are often considered as primary or secondary criteria of success. Studies designed to measure efficacy typically utilize two or more treatment groups and often use blocking structures to accommodate animal housing or litter related effects. When the criteria of interest are continuous or ordinal variables, as is the case with the above measurements, the mitigated …
Statistical Methods For Assessing Individual Oocyte Viability Through Gene Expression Profiles, Michael O. Bishop, John R. Stevens, S. Clay Isom
Statistical Methods For Assessing Individual Oocyte Viability Through Gene Expression Profiles, Michael O. Bishop, John R. Stevens, S. Clay Isom
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
In vivo derived oocytes are held as the gold standard for viability, other known origination methods are sub-par by comparison. Due to the low-viability of oocytes originating from these alternate methods, research was conducted to determine and quantify the validity of these alternate origination methods. However, the larger question of viability is on the individual oocyte level. We propose and compare methods of measurement based on gene expression profiles (GEPs) in order to assess oocyte viability, independent of oocyte origin. The first is based on a previously published wRMSD quantification of GEP differences. We also consider three novel methods: a …

Where I Come From: Exploring Regional Differences In California Consumers’ Attitudes And Beliefs About Fluid Milk, Annie R. Specht, Ashlan E. Wickstrom, Emily B. Buck
Journal of Applied Communications
Guided by the theory of reasoned action and social cognitive theory, this study was conducted to better understand how decisions to purchase organic or conventional milk are influenced by norms and attitudes established via human interactions and how those norms and attitudes vary by geographic region. An online Qualtrics survey was used to gain insight into behaviors, attitudes, and interactions of 308 milk consumers in various geographical regions of [State]. The findings indicate that urban, suburban, and rural consumers differ in some ways in their interactions related to milk information, as well as their perceptions of organic versus conventional milk. …

Journal of Applied Communications
Citrus greening is a critical issue facing the agricultural industry in the United States. The disease has been identified in residential and commercial areas, and there is a need to identify best practices in communicating with the public about the disease. The Situational Theory of Publics (STOPs) uses audience segmentation to determine how to best communicate with target consumers and was used to guide this study. The purpose of the study was to determine the types of publics present in the citrus producing states of Florida, California, and Texas as they relate to citrus greening. An online survey was completed …

Marketers rate online video as their most utilized content medium. This study used a between-subject control group post-test-only experiment to investigate the effect of three local food messages delivered via online video on U.S. consumers’ attitudes toward local food. The three 30-second videos each featured one of the documented benefits of local food: high quality, support of local economy, and strengthening of social connection. Results indicated all three video treatments yielded a positive attitude toward local food, while respondents in the control group had a neutral attitude. The video treatment featuring local food’s high quality generated a significantly more favorable …

Marketing Power Berries: An Importance-Performance Analysis Of Blueberry, Shuyang Qu, Alexa J. Lamm, Joy N. Rumble
Journal of Applied Communications
The unique health benefits of blueberries have increased consumers’ demand for this fruit. Although the demand is still low compared to other fruits including apples and grapes, consumers’ growing interest in blueberries has led to a significant increase of blueberry acreage in the U.S., causing the supply to exceed demand. To increase blueberry consumption and sales for the benefits of both consumers’ health and the blueberry industry, this study selected 18 blueberry attributes and used an online survey to examine blueberry purchasers’ perceived importance and satisfaction of these attributes. An importance-performance analysis (IPA) of these attributes was conducted to provide …
