Chemical And Toxicological Characterization Of The Upper York River, Virginia The Mattaponi And Pamunkey Rivers, Morris H. Roberts Jr., Mark Richards, Peter F. Delisle

Reports

This study describes the most extensive effort to characterize the chemistry, toxicology and community of the sediments of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers. This was accomplished using a study design modified to expand the number of stations occupied by reducing the cost of analyses by compositing replicate samples collected from each study site rather than performing toxicity tests on these samples individually. In previous studies, the variability in field replicate samples was equivalent to the variability in laboratory replicates. This design has long been used to analyze samples for various chemical contaminants as a cost savings endeavor. More ....

Evaluating And Enhancing The Success Of Oyster Reef Restoration: The Effects Of Habitat Complexity On Oyster Survival, Mark W. Luckenbach, Paige G. Ross

Reports

We evaluated the progress of several oyster restoration efforts of varying ages in three tidal tributaries of Chesapeake Bay, the Rappahannock, the Piankatank and Great Wicomoco rivers. In 2003 and 2004, we determined the density, biomass and size frequency distribution of oyster populations on the reefs during spring, summer and fall. Recruitment of oysters to the reefs was quantified using standardized substrates deployed and retrieved from the reef surfaces on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule from May through November. The prevalence and intensity of the oyster pathogens Perkinsus marinus and Haplosporidium nelsoni in oysters on the reefs was determined from …

It includes an assessment of the biological characteristics of striped bass taken from the 2004 spring spawning run, estimates of annual survival based on annual spring tagging, and the results of the fall 2003 directed mortality study that is a collaborative effort with the Maryland Department ofNatural Resources. The information contained in this report is required by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and is used to implement a coordinated management plan for striped …

Status Of The Major Oyster Diseases In Virginia 2003 A Summary Of The Annual Monitoring Program, Ryan Carnegie, Lisa M. Ragone Calvo, Eugene M. Burreson

Reports

Low temperatures and salinities brought abatement in the oyster diseases caused by Perkinsus marinus (Dermo) and Haplosporidium nelsoni (MSX) for the first time since 1998. In the James River, P. marinus prevalences were the lowest they had been since 1998. In summer and fall, when P. marinus is normally most prevalent, it was found in a maximum of 72% of oysters at Wreck Shoal and in less than half the oysters at Horsehead Rock and Point of Shoals. Advanced infections were very rare. Haplosporidium nelsoni had disappeared completely from quarterly James River samples by July

Historical Analysis Of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (Sav) In The Potomac River And Analysis Of Bay-Wide Sav Data To Establish A New Acreage Goal : Final Report, Kenneth Moore, David J. Wilcox, Britt Anderson, Thomas A. Parham, Michael D. Naylor Apr 2004

Naylor

Reports

Throughout most regions of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries both direct and anecdotal evidence has indicated that large-scale declines of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) occurred in the late 1960s and early 1970s (Orth and Moore 1983). These declines have been related to increasing amounts of non-point inputs of nutrients and sediments in the bay system resulting from development of the bay’s shorelines and watershed (Twilley et al. 1985). Currently there are approximately 89,659 acres of SAV in Chesapeake Bay (Orth et al. 2003). Although it has been estimated that this is approximately 15% of the bay’s historical SAV distribution, …

2003 Aerial Sea Turtle Survey In The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, K. L. Mansfield, J. A. Musick, K. L. Frisch

Reports

Every year, thousands of sea turtles seasonally utilize the Chesapeake Bay and coastal waters of Virginia as foraging grounds and developmental habitat. Sea turtles migrate north into Virginia’s waters in the spring when sea temperatures warm to approximately 18° C (Coles, 1999). Since 1979, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has recorded high sea turtle mortalities in the spring of the year when sea turtles first migrate into Virginia’s waters. Each year, between 200 and 400 sea turtle stranding deaths are recorded within Virginia’s waters. The vast majority of these strandings are juvenile loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and Kemp’s ridley …

Assessing The Economic Importance Of Commercial Fisheries In The Mid-Atlantic Region: A User's Guide To The Mid-Atlantic Input/Output Model, James E. Kirkley, Winnie Ryan, John Duberg Jan 2004

Assessing The Economic Importance Of Commercial Fisheries In The Mid-Atlantic Region: A User's Guide To The Mid-Atlantic Input/Output Model, James E. Kirkley, Winnie Ryan, John Duberg

Reports

The Mid-Atlantic input/output (I/O) model is designed to estimate the economic impacts associated with the harvesting of fish1 by commercial fishermen whose landings occur in a six-state region stretching from New York to North Carolina. These impacts are expressed in terms of employment (annual average jobs—both full and part-time jobs), labor income, and output (sales by U.S. businesses).

In addition to generating estimates of economic impacts for the Mid-Atlantic region, the model estimates these impacts for 12 subregions within this region. The subregions are defined by counties within the six-state Mid-Atlantic region. Individual states have from one to three subregions. …

Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay, January 2003-December 2003 : Annual Progress Report, Herbert M. Austin, A. Dean Estes, Donald M. Seaver, Amanda H. Hewitt

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has conducted a juvenile striped bass seine survey from 1967 through 1973 and from 1980 through the present. The primary objective has been the monitoring of the relative annual recruitment success ofjuvenile stripedbass in the spawning and nursery areas of Lower Chesapeake Bay. Initially (1967-1973), the survey was funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and when reinstated in 1980 with funding from the National Marine Fisheries Service under the Emergency Striped Bass Study program. Commencing with the 1988 annual survey, support of the program has been jointly made through the Sportfish …

Improving Siting And Construction : Criteria For Oyster Reef Restoration, Helen Woods, William J. Hargis Jr., Carl H. Hershner, Pam Mason

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay, named Chesepiooc, the “great shellfish bay,” by the Algonquin speaking native Americans of the region, was once one of the most productive oyster (Crassostrea virginica) producing estuaries in the world. With the advent of canning and the development of the railroad system, huge national and international markets were established for Chesapeake Bay oysters (United States Secretary of the Interior 1866,Wennerston 1981). From 1894 to 1912 annual oyster harvests in Virginia alone ranged from 5 to 7.5 million bushels (Hargis and Haven 1988). Shells from harvested oysters were not replaced on oyster grounds but sold for a variety …
