Is Growth Of Eelgrass Nitrogen Limited? A Numerical Simulation Of The Effects Of Light And Nitrogen On The Growth Dynamics Of Zostera Marina, Richard C. Zimmerman, Robert D. Smith, Randall S. Alberte

OES Faculty Publications

A numerical model of nitrogen uptake and growth was developed for the temperate seagrass Zostera marina L. Goals were to evaluate the relative effects of light and nitrogen availability on nitrogen uptake and partitioning between leaf and root tissue, and to estimate nitrogen concentrations in the sedment and water column required to saturate growth. Steady-state predictions are quite robust with respect to a range of parameter values justified by available data The calculations indicated that roots are probably more important in overall nitrogen acquisition in most light and nitrogen environments encountered in situ, but may contribute less than 50 …

The Relationship Of Upwelling To Mussel Production In The Rias On The Western Coast Of Spain, Jack O. Blanton, Kenneth R. Tenore, F. Castillejo, Larry P. Atkinson, Franklin B. Schwing, Amy Lavin Jan 1987

The Relationship Of Upwelling To Mussel Production In The Rias On The Western Coast Of Spain, Jack O. Blanton, Kenneth R. Tenore, F. Castillejo, Larry P. Atkinson, Franklin B. Schwing, Amy Lavin

CCPO Publications

We have calculated an upwelling index for each month over a 17-year period (1969-1985) for a point off the western coast of Spain. We interpret April through September values of the index to indicate the flux of nitrate-rich water in the Spanish Rias. The index representing the 6-month upwelling series has been correlated with an index representing the conditions of mussels grown during that season on rafts in Ria de Arosa. Two seasons represent extreme upwelling conditions over the 17-year sampling period: 1977 when the upwelling index was the highest, and 1983 when it was the lowest. A comparison of …

Clover Infertility Of Sheep : Continuing Problem, N R. Adams, Keith Croker Jan 1987

Clover Infertility Of Sheep : Continuing Problem, N R. Adams, Keith Croker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Some varieties of subterranean clover, notably Dinninup, Dwalganup and Yarloop, contain compounds which act like the female sex hormone oestrogen. These plant oestrogens, or "phyto-oestrogens", interfere with the fertility of sheep and depress the percentage of lambs born.

Over the past 10 years our understanding of clover infertility has increased, and we can now gauge the extent of this residual problem. In fact, there is a widespread but low-level incidence of infertility which does not greatly affect individial farms but which has an important impact on the State's sheep production.

Variation In Wheat Protein Content : The Effect Of Environment, G B. Crosbie, Harry Fisher Jan 1987

Variation In Wheat Protein Content : The Effect Of Environment, G B. Crosbie, Harry Fisher

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Over the past 20 years, the average protein content of WesternAustralian wheat has ranged from 9.3 to 12.0 per cent, with a mean level of 10.4 per cent. At most grain receival points, in any one season, individual loads can often vary in protein content by as much as 5 per cent protein or more. Rainfall and soil fertility account for much of this variation.

Increasing Protein Content Of Wheat By Breeding, B R. Whan, Graham Crosbie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The most efficient means of increasing protein content of WesternAustralian wheat is by breeding new varieties with higher inherent protein in their grain. But is this possible without sacrificing yeild or other desirable characteristics?

Morphometric Analysis Of Anguina Amsinckiae From Three Host Species, Dan James Pantone, John A. Griesbach, Armand R. Maggenti Jan 1987

Morphometric Analysis Of Anguina Amsinckiae From Three Host Species, Dan James Pantone, John A. Griesbach, Armand R. Maggenti

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Amsinckia species (fiddleneck) in the South Coast Ranges of California were surveyed to determine if any of the 12 different California species of Amsinckia are hosts of the nematode, Anguina amsinckiae (Steiner and Scott, 1935) Thorne, 1961. Previously only Amsinckia intermedia Fischer and Meyer was reported as a host of Anguina amsinckiae. The survey established that there are at least two additional hosts of Anguina amsinckiae: Amsinckia lycopsoides Lehmann and Amsinckia gloriosa Suksdorf. Seven sites containing nematode-infected Amsinckia plants were discovered. Every site contained two or more species of Amsinckia; however, only one site contained more than …

Embryonic And Postembryonic Development Of Meloidogyne Californiensis Abdei-Rahman & Maggenti, 1987 [Research Note], Fawzia Abdel-Rahman, Armand R. Maggenti

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

The embryonic and postembryonic development of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are well known and have been studied in detail. These studies have indicated that the ontogeny of rootknot nematodes is characterized by five developmental stages separated by four molts. In 1987, Abdel-Rahman and Maggenti described a new root-knot nematode species, Meloidogyne californiensis on bulrush (Scirpus robustus Pursh) in California. The objective of this note is to provide information on the ontogeny of M. californiensis.

A Reappraisal Of Tylenchina (Nemata). 4. The Family Anguinidae Nicoll, 1935 (1926), Renaud Fortuner, Armand R. Maggenti

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

The family Anguinidae is redefined. The families and subfamilies Nothotylenchidae/nae, Sychnotylenchidae/inae, Halenchidae/inae, Pseudhalenchinae, Ditylenchidae/nae, Cynipanguininae, Neoditylenchinae, Nothanguininae and Thadinae are rejected. The genera Anguina, Halenchus, Ditylenchus, Pseudhalenchus, Sychnotylenchus, Thada, Subanguina, Cynipanguina, and Pterotylenchus are recognized as valid in Anguinidae. Chitinotylenchus is a genus inquirendum or incertae sedis in Anguinidae. The following new synonyms are proposed: Nothotylenchus, Boleodoroides and Orrina synonyms of Ditylenchus; Nothanguina synonym of Anguina; Afrina and Mesoanguina synonyms of Subanguina; and Neoditylenchus synonym of Sychnotylenchus. Hypotheses on the evolution within Anguinidae are presented. A tabular key is includetod help identify the valid genera. …

A Reappraisal Of Tylenchina (Nemata) 1. For A New Approach To The Taxonomy Of Tylenchina, Michel Luc, Armand R. Maggenti, Renaud Fortuner, Dewey J. Raski, Etienne Geraert

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

During the last three decades plant-parasitic nematodes have received increasing attention. This was due mainly to the discovery during the years between 1943-1953 of the first efficient nematicides, DD, EDE and DBCP. This discovery gave a strong impetus to established nematology laboratories and led to the establishment of laboratories in previously "virgin," or nearly so, territories. As a result, there was an increase in the number of nematologists and taxonomic activity. This is particularly true in those areas new to nematology, because the soil fauna is virtually unknown and taxonomy is one of the few activities fitting with limited material …

Corrigendum: Revision Of The Name Eimeria Palustris Hertel And Duszynski, 1987, From Shrews (Sorex Spp.), Lynn Ann Hertel, Donald W. Duszynski Jan 1987

Corrigendum: Revision Of The Name Eimeria Palustris Hertel And Duszynski, 1987, From Shrews (Sorex Spp.), Lynn Ann Hertel, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

In the paper on shrew coccidians that appeared in the February 1987 issue of the Journal (Hertel and Duszynski, 1987, Journal of Parasitology 73: 172-183) we named one of our new species Eimeria palustris. Dr. N. D. Levine (University of Illinois) kindly informed us that the name E. palustris is preoccupied by an eimerian described from the rice rat, Oryzomys >palustris (Barnard, Ernst, and Stevens, 1971 , Journal of Parasitology 57: 1,293-1,296). We would like to rename the form we saw Eimeria longirostris for the specific name of the host in which the species was most prevalent.

Biochemical And Immunological Systematics Of Some Ascaridoid Nematodes: Genetic Divergence Between Congeners, Steven A. Nadler Jan 1987

Biochemical And Immunological Systematics Of Some Ascaridoid Nematodes: Genetic Divergence Between Congeners, Steven A. Nadler

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Vertical starch gel electrophoresis and trefoil immunodiffusion were used to study the systematics of some ascaridoid nematodes. Within the Ascarididae, the time scale of divergence was too great for intergeneric electrophoretic comparisons. Congeneric electrophoretic comparisons of Baylisascaris procyonis (host- raccoon) versus Baylisascaris transfuga (host- Black bear), and Toxocara canis (host- domestic dog) versus Toxocara cati (host- domestic cat) yielded Nei genetic distance coefficients of 1.21 and 1.55, respectively. Estimates of times of divergence made from 1 electrophoretic clock calibration suggest that the Baylisascaris species have not shared a common ancestor for 25 million years (Myr), and that the Toxocara species …

Late Fall Transmission Of Nematodirus Battus (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) In Western Oregon, Lora G. Rickard, Eric P. Hoberg, Gary L. Zimmerman, Jannell K. Erno

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Studies on Nematodirus battusCrofton and Thomas, 1951, have shown a marked seasonality in the pattern of transmission. The life cycle normally involves only one parasitic generation per year. The infective third-stage larvae develop over the summer within eggs deposited on pasture. Eggs are sensitized by low temperatures during fall and winter; larval hatching follows in the presence of adequate moisture and proper osmotic conditions as the temperature rises above 10°C. This set of conditions, conducive to hatching, is regularly present only during spring; thus, hatching of eggs is concentrated into a few weeks during this time. Outbreaks of clinical …

Brewers Condensed Solubles (BCS), a by-product of the brewing industry, was evaluated as a nutrient source for rearing juvenile oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and clams (Mercenaria mercenaria). The BCS was used to culture bacteria which were fed to colorless flagellates which were in turn fed to the oysters and clams. The overall growth efficiency of oysters on BCS was 473 mg of oyster (whole weight) per g of BCS (dry weight). Fourteen isolates representing nine genera of bacteria were isolated from BCS enrichment cultures. Specific growth rates of the isolates at &24\sp\circ{lcub}\rm C{rcub}& on a BCS medium ranged from 0.48 &{lcub}\rm …

Assessment Of Influence That The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Has On Exercise Habit Of Members Living In Utah County, Gary L. Preston

Theses and Dissertations

This study identified and analyzed the influence the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had on the decision of 309 respondents to exercise. The data obtained from the questionaires were analyzed using chi-square to compare males and females. Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were justified: women were more influenced by the LDS Church to exercise than men; LDS males and females exercised more than average American adults; walking, jogging, and aerobic dance were the most popular choices of LDS exercisers; and, there is a need to improve the awareness of LDS members concerning the Physical …

Arachnid Fauna In Three Central Florida Plant Communities, David T. Corey Jan 1987

Arachnid Fauna In Three Central Florida Plant Communities, David T. Corey

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Arachnids were collected in three plant communities on the University of Central Florida campus, beginning in May of 1983 and ending in March 1984. These sites were undisturbed communities: pond pine, sand pine scrub, and flatwoods. Pitfall traps and sweep nets were used to catch arachnids every other month.

A total of 2,657 arachnids were collected in pitfall traps and 4,022 in sweep nets. Spiders were the most numerous group, consisting of 87.5% of the individuals in pitfall traps and 100.0% in sweep nets. Forty-two scorpions, 41 pseudoscorpions, and 248 opilionids were captured on the ground surface.

Spider diversity on …

Broadacre Pest Control After Ddt, P J. Michael Jan 1987

Broadacre Pest Control After Ddt, P J. Michael

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

DDT may no longer be applied to broadacre crops grown in Western Australia. It is being replaced by other more effective chemicals and with new methods of pest control. DDT was the most effective chemical for the control of several major broadacre pests in this State and farmers may well wonder why this change was necessary and how they will manage without DDT.
