Research Report No. 17, Stand Structure And Yield Of Slash Pine Plantations In East Texas, Update: 1987, J. David Lenhart

Informal Project Reports

An updated diameter distribution yield prediction system is Presented for slash pine ( Pinus elliottii Engelm. ) plantations on non-old-fields in East Texas. The new revised system was developed using data from initial measurement ( 1982- 84) and first remeasurement ( 1985-87) of the East Texas Pine Plan tat ion Research Project permanent Plots.

Research Project No. 15, Predicting Individual Tree Height Of Planted Loblolly And Slash Pines In East Texas, Update: 1987, Cheryl R. Dixon

Informal Project Reports

Updated equations to estimate individual total tree height of loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L. ) and slash pine ( Pinus elliottii Engelm. ) trees planted on non-old-fields in East Texas are presented. The new revised equations were developed using data from initial measurement and first remeasurement of the East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project Permanent plots ( 1982-1987).

Female Dominance Among Purple Finches (Carpodacus Purpureus) In Winter Flocks, James W. Popp Oct 1987

Female Dominance Among Purple Finches (Carpodacus Purpureus) In Winter Flocks, James W. Popp

Field Station Bulletins

The dominance of females over males in winter flocks is rare. In this paper, I report on female dominance over males in winter flocks of Purple Finches (Carpodacus purpureus). Females won nearly all observed intersexual encounters and also differed from males in their use of agonistic displays. Female dominance has been reported for other species in the genus Carpodacus, but reasons for the occurrence of female dominance in this genus are unknown.

Three Decades Of Change In Three Southeastern Wisconsin Woodlots, Lawrence A. Leitner Oct 1987

Three Decades Of Change In Three Southeastern Wisconsin Woodlots, Lawrence A. Leitner

Field Station Bulletins

Three upland woodlots in southeastern Wisconsin, originally sampled by the Plant Ecology Lab of UW-Madison in 1949, were resampled in 1981. In general, red and white oaks were being replaced by more shade-tolerant species. Two of the sites, Zirbe's Woods and Petrifying Springs Woods, appear headed for complete domination by sugar maple. Thompson Woods, where maple was absent, was at an earlier successional stage. In Thompson Woods, basswood and white ash were becoming dominant.

Terrestrial Isopods At The Uwm Field Station, Joan P. Jass, Barbara Klausineier

Field Station Bulletins

Six species of terrestrial isopods were found in a preliminary survey of appropriate habitats at the UWM Field Station. Each species is characterized briefly with distinctive features of its morphology and life cycle.

The Problem Of Planting Louisiana Swamplands When Nutria (Myocastor Coypu) Are Present, William Conner, J R. Toliver Oct 1987

The Problem Of Planting Louisiana Swamplands When Nutria (Myocastor Coypu) Are Present, William Conner, J R. Toliver

Publications

Logging of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) in the swamps of the southeastern United States is once again becoming common and an area of particular concern in Louisiana is the regeneration of cypress in its natural environment. One way to ensure the proper stocking of cypress is to plant seedlings, but nutria usually damage or destroy newly planted seedlings and are a deterrent to cypress regeneration in flooded areas. In 1985 cypress seedlings were planted in a flooded logged area and in an area where flooding was preventing the establishment of natural seedlings. Nutria destroyed 86% of the seedlings in …

Clonal Foraging In Perennial Wheatgrasses: A Strategy For Exploiting Patchy Soil Nutrients, L. D. Humphrey, D. A. Pyke Oct 1987

Clonal Foraging In Perennial Wheatgrasses: A Strategy For Exploiting Patchy Soil Nutrients, L. D. Humphrey, D. A. Pyke

Aspen Bibliography

1 Foraging by means of plasticity in placement of tillers in response to low- and high- nutrient patches was examined in the rhizomatous wheatgrass Elymus lanceolatus ssp. lanceolatus. Its ability to exploit soil nutrient patches was compared to that of the closely related but caespitose E. lanceolatus ssp. wawawaiensis. 2 Clones of 14 genets of each taxon were planted in boxes consisting of two 30 x 30 cm cells: the 'origin cell' where clones were planted, and the adjacent 'destination cell', with each cell containing soil with either low or high levels of nutrients. 3 The rhizomatous taxon, which can …

Development Of Dynamic Non-Hortonian Watershed Models For Steeply Sloping Forested Watersheds: Application To Eastern Kentucky, Lindell E. Ormsbee, Abdul Q. Khan Aug 1987

Development Of Dynamic Non-Hortonian Watershed Models For Steeply Sloping Forested Watersheds: Application To Eastern Kentucky, Lindell E. Ormsbee, Abdul Q. Khan

KWRRI Research Reports

A comprehensive conceptual watershed model is developed to simulate the hydrologic response of steeply sloping forested watersheds. Two non-Hortonian and two Hortonian models were first tested with data from selected watersheds in West Virginia and eastern Kentucky in order to understand the different mechanisms of flow responsible for storm hydrograph generation in this type of watersheds. The two non-Hortonian models tested were the kinematic storage model (Sloan et al. 1983) and the saturation deficit model (Beven and Wood, 1983). Both models were unable to adequately reproduce the observed hydrographs in the four forested watersheds considered in this research. The two …

Response Of Breeding Birds To Commercial Clearcutting Of Aspen In Southwestern Colorado [Usa], V.E. Scott, G.L. Crouch Aug 1987

Response Of Breeding Birds To Commercial Clearcutting Of Aspen In Southwestern Colorado [Usa], V.E. Scott, G.L. Crouch

Aspen Bibliography

Breeding birds on an aspen forest in southwestern Colorado increased in species diversity after 25% of the timber sale area forest was clearcut in patches of 3 to 20 acres. Bird population density on the forest with clearcuts was not significantly different from that on an uncut forest. Of the 20 species evaluated, six were more and one was less abundant than on the uncut forest.
