Russian Roulette With Oysters : A Review Of Exotic Introductions And Information Needed For Planning New Ones, Jay D. Andrews

Reports

Importation and transplantation of exotic oysters has probably resulted in introduction of more marine invertebrate species than any other of man's activities. Unintentional introductions have resulted from careless movements of oysters without planning or consideration of consequences. Diseases and parasites are often unknown and oysters cannot be adequately diagnosed or inspected for problems by biologists. (...)

Submerged Aquatic Vegetation : Distribution And Abundance In The Lower Chesapeake Bay And The Interactive Effects Of Light, Epiphytes, And Grazers Final Report, Robert J. Orth, Kenneth A. Moore, Jacques Van Monfrans Jan 1982

Submerged Aquatic Vegetation : Distribution And Abundance In The Lower Chesapeake Bay And The Interactive Effects Of Light, Epiphytes, And Grazers Final Report, Robert J. Orth, Kenneth A. Moore, Jacques Van Monfrans

Reports

This final grant report is subdivided into two major sections. the first section describes the distribution and abundance of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in the lower Bay. Baseline information for SAV was collected in 1978 and supplemented with additional information from 1979. Subsequently, in 1980 and 1981, overflights were conducted of all polyhaline and mesohaline areas mapped for SAV in 1978 and photographs were taken from which aerial coverage of the vegetation was measured. The data from 1978 through 1981 were analyzed for short term changes in SAV distribution and abundance. This information was combined with historical data from six …

Development Of Oyster Resources, Katherine V. Leonard Jan 1982

Development Of Oyster Resources, Katherine V. Leonard

Reports

During the 3-year project period, augmentation of cultch material and transplanting of seed oysters as a means of increasing oyster production was used. Sites were selected for the planting and transplanting. These sites were evaluated based on several criteria. One of the major considerations is the relative abundance of previous spatfall or production in a given area. Several additional factors reviewed for selection included approximate date of peak setting, substrate type (muddy, sandy, rocky, etc. bottom), impact of MSX, estimate of bar potential, gross fishing efforts and salinity regimes. It is important to plant a week or two prior to …
