Evaluation Of Sethoxydim & Mbr 22359 For Control Of Rhizome Johnsongrass (Sorghum Halepense) In Soybeans (Glycine Max), E. Craig Musselman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense) is one of the most troublesome weeds in the southeastern United States. -everal herbicides have been developed to combat johnsongrass, and many new experimental herbicides with high johnsongrass control potential are presently being tested. Two of these new experimental herbicides for johnsongrass control in soybeans (Glycine max) are sethoxydim and MBR 22359.

Field experiments were conducted in 1981 and 1982 to evaluate the effectiveness of MBR 22359 preemergence and postemergence, sethoxydim in single and split applications, trifluralin in combination with mefluidide, or with glyphosate or sethoxydim in the wick, and alachior in combination …

Movement Ecology And Habitat Utilization Of Black Bears In Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee, Charles Rene Villarrubia Dec 1982

Movement Ecology And Habitat Utilization Of Black Bears In Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee, Charles Rene Villarrubia

Masters Theses

Forty-five captures of 28 black bears (Ursus americanus) were made in Cherokee National Forest (CNF), Tennessee between June 1978 and December 1979. Twenty-two bears were fitted with radio-collars.

Bears exhibited a crepuscular activity pattern which was modified seasonally. Higher levels of activity during the day in summer and at night in fall is attributed to bears feeding on available berry and acorn crops. Females with cubs were the most active sex-age group; this is likely related to the high energy demands of raising cubs.

Larger home ranges of males (30.1 km2) than females (11.6 km2 …

The Breakfast And Snacking Patterns Of East Tennessee Adolescents, Janie M. Ezell Dec 1982

The Breakfast And Snacking Patterns Of East Tennessee Adolescents, Janie M. Ezell

Masters Theses

Breakfast and snacking patterns and the effects of selected factors on these eating occasions were examined for 225 east Tennessee adolescents. Factors selected for examination included gender, regions (metropolitan vs. rural), mothers' employment, presence of a father in the household, number of children in the household, fathers' education, mothers' education, and who prepared breakfast. Twenty-four- hour food records and written questionnaires were collected from selected 15-18 year old adolescents attending four metropolitan and three rural high schools. Energy and nutrient intakes were evaluated for breakfast and snacks. As measures of overall quality, nutrient intakes per 1000 kilocalories and a dietary …

The Problems And Prospects Of The Kimberley Pastoral Industry, R B. Hacker Dec 1982

The Problems And Prospects Of The Kimberley Pastoral Industry, R B. Hacker

Resource management technical reports

The pastoral industry in the Kimberley region began in the early 1880s withthe introduction of cattle overlanded from Queensland and New South Wales into the East Kimberley and with the almost simultaneous introduction, by sea, ofboth sheep and cattle into the Fitzroy Valley.Occupation of the more accessible areas was gradually achieved by theprogressive extension of these two arms of settlement which ultimately metaround the present location of Fitzroy Crossing. Extensive development of themore rugged areas of the North Kimberley came later with the construction ofreasonable access roads to the few isolated stations which had been initiallyestablished in this area.

The Effects Of Photoperiod-Temperature Interactions On Testicular Regression In The Green Anole, Anolis Carolinensis, Teri Wickelhaus Dec 1982

The Effects Of Photoperiod-Temperature Interactions On Testicular Regression In The Green Anole, Anolis Carolinensis, Teri Wickelhaus

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Interrupted-night photoperiod experiments were carried out in green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) in July and August 1981 in order to explore the possibility that seasonal timing of testicular regression regulated by day length involves circadian rhythms. The influence that temperature has on testicular responsiveness to light was also assessed. Testicular weight responses to different interrupted-night photoperiod treatments were similar in anoles kept at constant warm temperatures but varied in anoles kept at constant cold temperatures. Rates of decline of spermatogenesis in response to different interrupted-night photoperiod treatments were, on the other hand, similar in anoles kept at constant cold …

Generation, Isolation And Assay Methods For Human Lymphocyte Mitogenic Factor, Thomas E. Seay Dec 1982

Generation, Isolation And Assay Methods For Human Lymphocyte Mitogenic Factor, Thomas E. Seay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Activated lymphocytes secrete many products including the lymphokine human lymphocyte mitogenic factor (HLMF). In preliminary experiments lymphocytes from peripheral blood and palatine tonsils were evaluated as possible sources of HLMF by evaluating their level of activation through screening their spontaneous and concanavalin A (con A)-induced blastogenic responses. Tonsil lymphocytes (TL) were found to have high spontaneous proliferation as compared to peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). Cells from both sources responded to con A by undergoing a typical blastogenic response. Because TL must be obtained septically, they are frequently cultured in the presence of the antimycotic agent, Amphotericin B (Am B). Since …

Hyperviscosity Syndrome Complicating Rheumatoid Arthritis: Report Of Two Additional Cases And Review Of The Literature, Michael R. Lovy, Mark C. Kranc, Gilbert B. Bluhm, Jeanne M. Riddle, Paul D. Stein

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A hyperviscosity syndrome developed in two patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Analytic ultracentrifugation of the sera from one patient demonstrated 22S complexes. Intermediate, 22S, and 31S complexes were found in the second case. Platelet aggregometry and electron microscopy surveys of the platelet reactivity in one patient demonstrated inhibition of platelet reactivity caused by the presence of the high molecular weight complexes. These abnormalities, as well as the clinical bleeding, whole blood, and plasma viscosity, became normal after treatment. In vivo leukocytic function was studied with the Rebuck skin window technique, and phagosomal inclusions were observed in both the polymorphonuclear neutrophils and …

The Effect Of Dwarf Mistletoe (Arceuthobium Americanum) Upon A Portion Of The Carbon Budget Of Lodgepole Pine (Pinus Contorta), Nancy Ellen Broshot Nov 1982

The Effect Of Dwarf Mistletoe (Arceuthobium Americanum) Upon A Portion Of The Carbon Budget Of Lodgepole Pine (Pinus Contorta), Nancy Ellen Broshot

Dissertations and Theses

Arceuthobium americanum is a vascular plant which is parasitic upon Pinus contorta var. murrayana. Its documented effects include reductions in host growth, vigor and wood quality. The specific physiological changes that occur in the host are, for the most part, unknown.

In an attempt to understand the manner in which the mistletoe alters its host's carbon budget, a model is proposed which states that the host plant has priorities for carbon allocation. The model proposes that the parasite will access the host's carbon initially in terms of carbon intended for storage, next, in terms of carbon intended for growth, …

Responses Of Estuarine Infauna To Disturbance. I. Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Initial Recolonization, Roman N. Zajac, Robert B. Whitlatch Nov 1982

Responses Of Estuarine Infauna To Disturbance. I. Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Initial Recolonization, Roman N. Zajac, Robert B. Whitlatch

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications

Responses to disturbance of estuarine infauna were studied to test the hypothesis that seasonality, the estuarine environmental gradient and sediment composition would significantly affect recolonization. The study was conducted in a small estuary located in southeastern Connecticut, USA, using controlled disturbance experiments and sampling of the ambient infauna. Species composition in experimental plots and ambient sediments usually did not differ, either on a seasonal or areal basis. Numerically dominant species usually included the polychaetes Streblospio benedicti, Capitella spp. and Polydora ligni, and the oligochaete Peloscolex gabriellae. Other species included the polychaetes Scoloplos fragilis, Hobsonia florida and Nereis …

Responses Of Estuarine Infauna To Disturbance. Ii. Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Succession, Roman N. Zajac, Robert B. Whitlatch

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications

Infaunal successional patterns in Alewife Cove, a small estuary in southeastern Connecticut, USA, varied significantly seasonally and along the estuarine environmental gradient. Each study site exhibited different patterns of change in species composition and abundance. However, suites of species found during succession did not differ greatly from those found in ambient sediments. Species which exhibited the most variable population changes during succession were numerically dominant tubiculous polychaetes (Streblospio benedicti, Capitella spp., Polydora ligni], and an oligochaete (Peloscolex gabriellae). Other species which exhibited significant activity were the polychaetes Scoloplos fragilis, Hobsonia florida and Nereis virens, the hemichordate Saccoglossus kowaleski, and the …

Foot Rot, Don Hudson Nov 1982

Foot Rot, Don Hudson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Foot rot (necrotic pododermatitis, foul foot) can be a very annoying problem in cattle. Once started in a herd and "seeded" in the soil, it may persist for quite a long time. Although the incidence of foot rot may not be high at any one time, it requires constant observation to prevent serious economic loss. The bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum has been reported to cause foot rot. However, researchers have not been able to reproduce typical foot rot lesions with this organism. Recent research at the University of Missouri indicates that a combination of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus are the …

A Comparison Of The Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Prepubescent Boys And Adult Men To Similar Exercise Programs, Mary Marlene Petratis Nov 1982

A Comparison Of The Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Prepubescent Boys And Adult Men To Similar Exercise Programs, Mary Marlene Petratis

Student Work

The cardiorespiratory effects of exercise training in adults have been widely researched (26,39,53,56,57). Through training, the adult experiences an increase in maximum aerobic power (V 02 max), a decrease in resting and submaximum heart rate and an increase in maximum cardiac output (26,36,53,54,59,60). These physiological changes result in an increase in physical working capacity and an enhanced tolerance to all exercise workloads.

Factors contributing to the training effect in the adult include the intensity, the duration, and the frequency of exercise (1, 2). The recommended type of exercise involves activities which use large muscle groups of the body in a …

Simultaneous Oxidation Of Glycine And Malate By Pea Leaf Mitochondria, Griffin H. Walker, David J. Oliver, G. Sarojini Nov 1982

Simultaneous Oxidation Of Glycine And Malate By Pea Leaf Mitochondria, Griffin H. Walker, David J. Oliver, G. Sarojini

David J. Oliver

Mitochondria isolated from pea leaves (Pisum sativum L.) readily oxidized malate and glycine as substrates. The addition of glycine to mitochondria oxidizing malate in state 3 diminished the rate of malate oxidation. When glycine was added to mitochondria oxidizing malate in state 4, however, the rate of malate oxidation was either unaffected or stimulated. The reason both glycine and malate can be metabolized in state 4 appears to be that malate only used part of the electron transport capacity available in these mitochondria in this state. The remaining electron transport capacity was used by glycine, thus allowing both substrates to …

Reproductive Biology Of The Rat Lungworm Angiostrongylus Cantonensis (Metastrongyloidea: Angiostrongylidae), Grace Spatafora Harris Nov 1982

Reproductive Biology Of The Rat Lungworm Angiostrongylus Cantonensis (Metastrongyloidea: Angiostrongylidae), Grace Spatafora Harris

Master's Theses

Twenty rats (Rattus norvegicus) received infective inocula of 5, 10, 20, and 40 third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The effects of varying doses of larvae on prepatent period larval production, worm establishment, worm size, and fertility were studied. The aquatic gastropod Biomphalaria glabratta was the experimental intermediate host.

The duration of the prepatent period varied from 37 to 45 days. The shortest prepatent period was observed in animals that received the highest infective inoculum. The prepatent period showed a significant inverse relationship with increasing inoculum size. Larval production increased logarithmically, followed by a plateau phase. The number of larvae per …

Spermidine-Condensed Phi X174 Dna Cleavage By Micrococcal Nuclease: Torus Cleavage Model And Evidence For Unidirectional Circumferential Dna Wrapping., Kenneth A. Marx, Thomas C. Reynolds

Dartmouth Scholarship

Spermidine-condensed phi X174 replicative form (RF) II DNA was digested with micrococcal nuclease to yield seven identifiable DNA bands forming an arithmetic fragment-length series. The DNA monomer unit length was found to be 780 +/- 80 base pairs. This result is most consistent with a proposed model for micrococcal nuclease cleavage of a DNA torus organized by the unidirectional, circumferential wrapping of B-geometry DNA. By a topological consideration, the blunt-end-rod-fusion model for torus formation [Eickbush, T. H. & Moudrianakis, E. N. (1978) Cell 13, 295-306] is shown to be inconsistent with our empirical solution results. We propose a continuous, circumferential …
