Development For The Past, Present, And Future: Defining And Measuring Sustainable Development, Max Cantor
Development For The Past, Present, And Future: Defining And Measuring Sustainable Development, Max Cantor
Senior Honors Projects
In 1987, the United Nations released the Brundtland Report, which defined sustainable development as “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” While this definition provides a relatively stable theoretical base from which development economists and political scientists can begin to tackle issues surrounding sustainable development, the inherently amorphous nature of this definition has also created a fair amount of ambiguity in both the economic literature surrounding sustainable development and the subsequent attempts by economists to measure it.
Historically, those interested in the science of development have typically …
Reforesting Ohio Using A Historical Legend: Blight-Resistant Chestnut Hybrids As A Coal Mine Restoration Tree, Jenise Bauman
Reforesting Ohio Using A Historical Legend: Blight-Resistant Chestnut Hybrids As A Coal Mine Restoration Tree, Jenise Bauman
College of the Environment on the Peninsulas Publications
The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) once occupied twenty-five percent of the eastern forests in the United States. Its massive size and prolific nut production made this species ecologically and economically important. At maturity, this species could top over 100 feet with immense, wide-spreading canopies. As a nut crop, the American chestnut tree was plentiful and considered one of the most important protein sources for wildlife such as squirrels, wild turkeys, deer, black bears, and many others. The lumber produced was extremely rot resistant and used for the construction of cabins, …

The McIntire-Stennis (M-S) Cooperative Forestry Research Program has provided fundamental support for creating and strengthening forestry research and graduate training efforts at colleges and universities across the nation for nearly 50 years. M-S funding has helped produce thousands of forestry scientists and other research professionals, and M-S–supported research has provided critical basic understanding and applied solutions to extend the benefits that flow from forests and related rangelands across the nation over time. The 1962 legislation that created the M-S program authorized funding of up to one-half of the funds appropriated for federal forestry research conducted directly by the USDA. Throughout …

Assessment Of The Domestication State Of Ackee (Blighia Sapida K.D. Koenig) In Benin Based On Aflp And Microsatellite Markers, Marius R.M. Ekué, Oliver Gailing, Barbara Vornam, Reiner Finkeldey
Michigan Tech Publications
Ackee (Blighia sapida) is a native multipurpose species important for the livelihoods of the rural populations in Benin. Trees are found in natural forests or are managed by farmers in different traditional agroforestry systems. Genetic variation at amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers, four nuclear microsatellites (nSSRs) and one chloroplast microsatellite (cpSSR) were investigated in 279 individuals from six wild and eight cultivated populations from Benin. The AFLP data revealed moderate levels of diversity of ackee in Benin (mean diversity values are proportion of polymorphic loci = 52.8% and Nei's gene diversity = 0.157, for 375 AFLP fragments). The mean …

Cottonwood Riparian Site Selection On The Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, Julie A. Thorstenson, Diane Rickerl, Janet H. Gritzner
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
The construction of the Oahe Dam on the Missouri River eliminated thousands of acres ofriparian and floodplain lands on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. Restoration is needed to replace wildlife habitat. This study focused on site selection for native cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr. Ex Marsh. ssp. Monilifers (Ait.) Eckenwalde) restoration to help mitigate this loss. Geographic information systems technologies were used to develop a suitability model for cottonwood restoration. Tribal lands were extracted from a digital dataset oflandownership. Those touched by or included in a 46 m border of the Moreau River were candidate sites. Of …

With the progression of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) towards a mainstream resource management tool, it has become necessary to understand how best to process and analyze the data. While most ground surface identification algorithms remain proprietary and have high purchase costs; a few are openly available, free to use, and are supported by published results. Two of the latter are the multiscale curvature classification and the Boise Center Aerospace Laboratory LiDAR (BCAL) algorithms. This study investigated the accuracy of these two algorithms (and a combination of the two) to create a digital terrain model from a raw LiDAR point …

Leaf Number Indicates Salt Tolerance Of Young Seedling Families Of European Aspen (Populus Tremula L.) Growing In Different Soils, Lu-Min Vaario, Kim Yrjälä, Matti Rousi, Timo Sipila, Pertti Pulkkinen
Aspen Bibliography
Soil salinity limits plant productivity and quality. We evaluated the response of 12 aspen (Populus tremula) families to salt stress in two different soils irrigated for 4-weeks with 0, 80 or 160 mM saline solution. Easily measurable characteristics such as shoot height, leaf number, dry mass as well as the distribution of sodium (Na+) ions were measured in 5-month-old aspen seedlings raised in controlled greenhouse conditions on two different soils. Growth among families varied significantly, and the interaction between family and soil type was significant. From 2–5 months, leaf number correlated with that of the first month and salin-ity tolerance. …
Native Forest And Woodland Management Guidelines For Nebraska's Wildlife Management Areas, Gerry Steinauer
Native Forest And Woodland Management Guidelines For Nebraska's Wildlife Management Areas, Gerry Steinauer
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
This document is one in a four part series produced by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to provide direction to managers of Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in Nebraska. Other documents in the series cover management of grasslands, wetlands, and early successional habitats.
Prior to Euroamerican settlement wildfires, drought and competition with prairie grasses limited the presettlement distribution of trees in Nebraska to well-watered and somewhat fire protected river valleys and rocky escarpments. At that time, wooded habitats covered about 2 percent of the Nebraska landscape. Though limited in areal, these communities were diverse and supported important components of Nebraska’s …

Assessing The Performance Of Sampling Designs For Measuring The Abundance Of Understory Plants, Ilana L. Abrahamson, Cara R. Nelson, David L.R. Affleck
Forest Management Faculty Publications
Accurate estimation of responses of understory plants to disturbance is essential for understanding the efficacy of management activities. However, the ability to assess changes in the abundance of plants may be hampered by inappropriate sampling methodologies. Conventional methods for sampling understory plants may be precise for common species but may fail to adequately characterize abundance of less common species. We tested conventional (modified Whittaker plots and Daubenmire and point–line intercept transects) and novel (strip adaptive cluster sampling [SACS]) approaches to sampling understory plants to determine their efficacy for quantifying abundance on control and thinned-and-burned treatment units in Pinus ponderosa forests …
