Protein Rrcovered From Oyster Wash Water By Ultrafiltration And Their Utilization As Oyster Sauce Through Fermentation, Chyuan-Yuan Shiau, Tuu-Jyi Chai Dec 2009

Protein Rrcovered From Oyster Wash Water By Ultrafiltration And Their Utilization As Oyster Sauce Through Fermentation, Chyuan-Yuan Shiau, Tuu-Jyi Chai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The use of ultrafiltration to recover proteins from oyster wash water was found to increase the protein concentration by 18 folds. The concentrations of total suspended solids and chemical oxygen demand in the permeate were reduced by 98 and 47%, respectively. Fermentation was a good method to improve the flavor of the retentate from ultrafiltration. The increase in concentrations of extractive-N, free amino acids and small peptides supported the idea that the fermentation process with Koji (cultured with Aspergillus oryzae) could accelerate the hydrolysis of the recovered protein. The Koji fermented juice was made into oyster sauce, which was accepted …

Influence Of Surface Currents On Post-Nesting Migration Of Green Sea Turtles Nesting On Wan-An Island, Penghu Archipelago, Taiwan, I-Jiunn Cheng, Yu-Huai Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The relationships between ambient flows and the migration corridors of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting at Wan-an Island, Penghu Archipelago in Taiwan Strait were determined. Six turtles deployed with Argos-linked satellite tags from 1996 to 2004 were used. The ambient flows were derived from the combination of ship board measurements, a global tidal model, and the geostrophic flows derived from sea surface height anomalies. The results showed that there were, basically, three migrating patterns. Turtles that migrated northeastward rode the main surface currents, traveling 2000 km in a month. The swimming speeds along the track were less than 0.5 m …

Fleet Dynamic Analysis Of The Taiwan Offshore Trawl Fishery: An Application Of The Sea Surface Temperature Measures, Chin-Hwa Sun, Fu-Sung Chiang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The overall goal of this paper is to provide important information documenting and analyzing Taiwan’s trawl fishing fleet activities in the northeastern of Taiwan. Seasonal SST data are used to analyze different seasonal fishing patterns and the density of fleet dynamics of offshore trawl fleet is used to identify five distinct fishing areas (A, B, C, D, and E) in the northeastern of Taiwan. A Wilcoxon sign test is used to examine the variability in the percent of days spent in each fishing area from 1993 to 1996. Results show that a significant portion of trawl vessels have shifted from …

Cloned Meat, Voluntary Food Labeling, And Organic Oreos, Donna M. Byrne Dec 2009

Cloned Meat, Voluntary Food Labeling, And Organic Oreos, Donna M. Byrne

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In December 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it had reviewed all the available evidence and was poised to approve meat and milk from cloned animals and their progeny. I remember telling one of my colleagues, a patent law professor, who should be as comfortable with technology as anyone, about this development, and his response was, “Yuck. I’m not eating it!” To which of course I replied, “Humph. You won’t know the difference.” Meat or milk from a clone or its descendant is virtually identical to meat or milk from a non-clone, said the FDA, as …

Remarks On The Stability Of Some Size-Structured Population Models V: The Case When The Death Rate Depends On Adults Only And The Growth Rate Depends On Size Only, M. El-Doma Dec 2009

Remarks On The Stability Of Some Size-Structured Population Models V: The Case When The Death Rate Depends On Adults Only And The Growth Rate Depends On Size Only, M. El-Doma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We continue our study of size-structured population dynamics models when the population is divided into adults and juveniles, started in El-Doma (To appear). We concentrate our efforts in the special case when the death rate depends on adults only, the growth rate depends on size only and the maximum size for an individual in the population is infinite. Three demographic parameters are identified and are shown to determine conditions for the (in)stability of a nontrivial steady state. We also give examples that illustrate the stability results. The results in this paper generalize previous results, for example, see Calsina, et al. …

Two-Layered Model Of Blood Flow Through Composite Stenosed Artery, Padma Joshi, Ashutosh Pathak, B. K. Joshi Dec 2009

Two-Layered Model Of Blood Flow Through Composite Stenosed Artery, Padma Joshi, Ashutosh Pathak, B. K. Joshi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper a steady, axisymmetric flow, with a constricted tube has been studied. The artery has been represented by a two-layered model consisting of a core layer and a peripheral layer. It has been shown that the resistance to flow and wall shear stress increases as the peripheral layer viscosity increases. The results are compared graphically with those of previous investigators. It has been observed that the existence of peripheral layer is useful in representation of diseased arterial system.

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We continue our study of size-structured population dynamics models when the population is divided into adults and juveniles, started in El-Doma (to appear 1) and continued in El-Doma (to appear 2). We concentrate our efforts in two special cases, the first is when the death rate depends on juveniles only and the growth rate depends on size only, and, the second is when both the death rate and the growth rate depend on size only. In both special cases we assume that the maximum size for an individual in the population is infinite. We identify three demographic parameters and show …

Pulsatile Flow Of Blood In A Constricted Artery With Body Acceleration, Devajyoti Biswas, Uday Shankar Chakraborty Dec 2009

Pulsatile Flow Of Blood In A Constricted Artery With Body Acceleration, Devajyoti Biswas, Uday Shankar Chakraborty

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Pulsatile flow of blood through a uniform artery in the presence of a mild stenosis has been investigated in this paper. Blood has been represented by a Newtonian fluid. This model has been used to study the influence of body acceleration and a velocity slip at wall, in blood flow through stenosed arteries. By employing a perturbation analysis, analytic expressions for the velocity profile, flow rate, wall shear stress and effective viscosity, are derived. The variations of flow variables with different parameters are shown diagrammatically and discussed. It is noticed that velocity and flow rate increase but effective viscosity decreases, …
