Risks associated with independent feeder-pig finishing have prompted finishers to seek alternative finishing and marketing methods. A means of reducing risk has developed through contract feeder-pig finishing. Research results indicated that slightly risk-averse finishers required contract base payments ranging from $11.00 to $30.00 per head. Strongly risk-averse finishers required contract base payments ranging from $8.50 to $19.00 per head. The lower end of the ranges is for a low-profit finisher. In Exp. 1, increasing dietary lysine from .40% to .70% linearly improved ADG, F/G, 10th rib fat depth, and percentage lean in finishing gilts from 200 to 250 lb. Increasing dietary lysine also tended to improve longissimus muscle area. Results from Exp. 2 indicate no improvement in growth or carcass performance of gilts fed greater than .60% lysine. The combined results of Exp. 1 and 2 indicate that finishing gilts from 200 to 250 lb requires between .60% to .70% (18 to 20 g/d) dietary lysine to maximize both growth performance and carcass characteristics.; Swine Day, Manhattan, KS, November 21, …

We used a total of 11,653 pigs to examine the influence of a lysine phase-feeding regimen on growth performance and carcass characteristics in finishing pigs. We found that the lysine regimen did not affect ADG. Also, the low-lysine regimen was adequate for maximizing growth performance and carcass characteristics of barrows. However, the low-lysine regimen was inadequate to optimize feed efficiency in gilts. Further analysis indicated that the largest differences in feed efficiency were for the 115 to 160 lb period in gilts. Eighty pigs, 40 barrows and 40 gilts, on two commercial finishing operations were used to model growth and accretion rates. Major differences were observed between the two farms. Pigs fed diets with soybean oil consumed less feed; grew more efficiently; and had greater last-rib backfat thickness, keratosis, and ulceration in their stomachs than pigs fed diets without soybean oil. Pigs fed diets with NaHC03 tended to eat more feed and had numerically greater ADG, but feed/gain and carcass measurements were not affected. A 21-day growth trial was conducted to determine the isoleucine: lysine ratio necessary to optimize growth performance of the 25 to 50 lb nursery pig reared in a segregated early-weaning (SEW) system. Ten experimental diets, including two levels of lysine (.75% and 1.10% digestible lysine) and five apparent digestible isoleucine:lysine ratios (45, 50, 55, 60, and 65%), were used in a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement. Growth performance was improved by feeding 1.10% rather than .75% digestible lysine. Two growth trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing the lactose provided by dried whey in the phase II diet with either deproteinized whey or an alternative lactose source, DairyLac 80®. No differences in performance observed among pigs fed diets containing 10% dried whey or deproteinized whey or DairyLac 80®. A total of 317 lactating sows was fed either a corn-soybean meal diet (l.0%lysine) or a diet with a portion of the soybean meal replaced with 5% select menhaden fish meal on an equal lysine basis. Adding 5% select menhaden fish meal had no overall effect on sow or litter performance. High producing sows were used to evaluate the effect of spray-dried blood cells as a dietary protein source on lactation performance and subsequent reproductive performance. No significant differences were observed between sows fed a corn-soybean cells-based diet or a diet containing 2.5% spray-dried blood cells for lactation performance or subsequent reproductive performance. Sixty four gilts (initially 120 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of increasing total sulfur amino acid (TSAA):lysine ratios on growth performance and carcass characteristics. Diets included two levels of lysine (.55% and .70% total lysine) and three TSAA:lysine ratios (60, 65, and 70% of lysine) arranged in a 2 x 3 factorial. A tendency for a lysine x TSAA interaction was observed for ADG and ADFI. Increasing TSAA:lysine ratio decreased ADG and ADFI in pigs fed .55% lysine; however, ADG and ADFI were increased in pigs fed .70% lysine and 65% TSAA:lysine. Pigs fed .70% lysine had improved …

We evaluated the effects of a modified-live virus vaccine for PRRS virus on nursery growth performance. The pigs used in this study were obtained from a herd with substandard nursery growth performance attributed to PRRS virus infection. We failed to detect the presence of active circulating field strain virus in either the controls or vaccinated pigs. However, we did detect a strain similar to the vaccine virus strain on d 34 after weaning in the vaccinated pigs. A total of 336 barrows (initially 21.8 lb and 31 ± 2 d of age) was used to evaluate the results of increasing levels of choice white grease and lysine:calorie ratio on pig performance. A 14-day growth trial was conducted to determine the interactive effects of ingredient processing and diet complexity on growth performance of segregated early-weaned pigs. Three processing combinations were used with either a simple or complex diet formulation in 2 x 3 factorial arrangement. Diets were pelleted (control); the corn was moist-extruded, then the complete diet pelleted (extruded); or the complete diet was expanded then pelleted (expanded). An interaction was observed between ingredient processing and diet complexity. Pigs fed the control or extruded diets had improved growth performance as diet complexity increased. Finishing gilts (initially 163 lb) were fed .58% total lysine (.50% apparent digestible) and total sulfur amino acid (TSAA) concentrations of .26, .285, .31, .335, and .36% (.225 to .325% apparent digestible). These values represent TSAA: lysine ratios of 45, 50, 55, 60, and 65%. Results suggest a linear decrease in ADG and ADFI along with poorer F/G with increasing TSAA levels. However, gilts fed .285% TSAA (50% of lysine) had the best ADG and F/G. No effect was observed on any carcass criteria. A 21-day growth trial was conducted to determine the effect of various carbohydrate sources with or without moist extrusion processing on growth performance of segregated early-weaned pigs. Treatments included five different carbohydrate sources (corn, corn starch, rice, wheat flour, and grain sorghum) with or without moist extrusion processing in a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement. No interactions were observed among carbohydrate sources and extrusion processing. Growth performance was not improved by extrusion processing. This research evaluated the effectiveness of a newly patented steam-pasteurization process for reducing bacterial populations on the surfaces of freshly slaughtered beef carcasses. The process was developed jointly by Frigoscandia Food Processing Systems (Bellevue, WA) and Excel Corp. (Wichita, KS), a division of Cargill (Minneapolis, MN). In laboratory studies, portions of prerigor beef carcasses inoculated with very high levels of three pathogens, Salmonella, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria, were treated in a prototype steam-pasteurization chamber, which effectively eliminated at least 99.9% of all three pathogens and was most effective when used in combination with other standard commercial decontamination methods. Data from 5 years of a long-term, rotational crossbreeding project were used to compare breeds for growth and carcass traits. The traits of interest were direct and maternal birth and weaning weights, gain on feed, hot carcass weight, ribeye area, marbling score, and slaughter age. Angus, Brahman, Hereford, Charolais, Simmental, and Gelbvieh breeds were involved. Simmental and Gelbvieh were used as terminal breeds, so maternal effects were not calculated for them. Brahman breeding caused an increased direct birth weight of the calves, but the maternal influence of Brahman decreased birth weight. No difference occurred in maternal weaning weight among the …

Ninety pregnant Angus Hereford cows consuming low-quality, tallgrass-prairie hay were used to evaluate the influence of changing the amount of supplemental degradable intake protein (DIP) derived from urea on body weight and body condition changes, pregnancy rate, and calf performance. Supplemental treatment groups were: 0, 20, and 40% of the supplemental DIP from urea. Supplements were formulated to contain 30% CP . When sufficient DIP was offered to prepartum cows to maximize DOMI, urea could replace up to 40% of the DIP in a high-protein (30%) supplement without causing problems of supplement palatability. Twelve ruminally fistulated steers were used to evaluate the effect of changing the proportion of supplemental degradable intake protein (DIP) derived from urea on forage intake and digestion. Steers had ad libitum access to a low-quality tallgrass-prairie hay. Supplemental treatment groups were: 1) 0% of the supplemental DIP from urea, 2) 20% of the supplemental DIP from urea, and 3) 40% of the supplemental DIP from urea. Eighty crossbred heifers (549 lb initial body weight) were developed in drylot and limit-fed a forage sorghum silage diet predicted to produce gains of either 1 lb/day for the entire developmental period (EVENGAIN) or .25 lb/day for the first two-thirds of the period followed by 2 lb/day during the last third (LATEGAIN). Treatments began on November 7, 1994 and continued until April 24, 1995 (onset of the breeding season). Actual daily gains over the entire feeding period averaged 1.18 and 1.10 lb/day for EVENGAIN and LATEGAIN heifers, respectively. Age and weight at puberty were not affected by feeding treatment. Data from 5 years of a long-term, rotational, crossbreeding project were used to calculate heritabilities and correlations and to make breed comparisons for growth rate and carcass traits in two different postweaning management systems. The traits studied were weight per day of age, hot carcass weight, ribeye area, marbling score, and days of age at slaughter. One group was placed on full feed after weaning. A second group underwent a backgrounding phase for 7 months at Louisiana State University before being placed on feed at KSU. Fumonisins are water-soluble carcinogenic mycotoxins produced by many species of Fusarium molds. Fumonisins occur widely in corn, making them a problem in corn-based feed. Their toxicity has been established in many species. However, their effects on cattle and the potential of carryover to the human diet through beef has not been studied extensively. A 30-day cattle feeding study was conducted by feeding fumonisin-contaminated corn grits dosed at 400 g/g fumonisin B1 (FB1) and 130 g/g fumonisin B2 (FB2) to 3 steers averaging 480 lb. Thirteen steers were used in a 4 13 incomplete Latin square to determine chemical composition and digestibility for 13 samples of tallgrass prairie hay. Hays were collected from a variety of locations in east-central Kansas and represented a wide array of harvest dates and storage conditions. Steers were fed prairie hay and soybean meal at 1.5% and .2% of body weight, respectively, to equalize intakes relative to body weight and prevent degradable intake protein (DIP) from limiting extent of digestion. Agronomic and silage quality traits were examined for 12 winter cereals harvested at two stages of maturity. Forage dry matter (DM) yields were higher at the mid-dough than the early-heading stage. Post 90 barley had the highest whole-plant DM yield at the early-heading stage, and Presto triticale had the highest yield at the mid-dough stage. Newton wheat had the lowest whole-plant DM yield at both stages of maturity. Fusobacterium necrophorum was the predominant bacterial isolate from liver abscesses of feedlot cattle fed with or without tylosin. The major difference in the bacterial flora of liver abscesses between cattle groups was the higher incidence of Actinomyces pyogenes in the tylosin-fed cattle. Because the minimum inhibitory concentration of tylosin was not different between bacterial isolates from cattle in the two treatments, we concluded that continuous feeding of tylosin does not induce resistance. The source of A. pyogenes infection and significance of A. pyogenes interaction with F. necrophorum in tylosin-fed cattle are not known.

One 550 lb steer was injected subcutaneously twice, once on each side of the neck, with 5 milliliters of Ultrabac 7 ficlostridial vaccine with a new 16 gauge, 3/4 inch needle. The injections were given 30 days and 36 hours prior to euthanasia, at which time the two resultant lesions were collected. The lesions were evaluated for tissue damage, and physical descriptors were recorded. The 36-hour injection caused an acute lesion with higher than normal levels of neutrophils and erythrocytes in its center. Within the surrounding skeletal muscle, levels of fibrin and edem a fluid were increased, causing separation of …

Four trials were con ducted to determine the effect of different implants on steers and heifers grazing native grass pastures for different lengths of time. In addition, two groups of steers were followed through a feeding period to determine if previous implanting had a residual effect on gain. The implanted (Ralgrofi, Ralgrofi Magnum , Synovex Sfi) steers gained faster than the controls; however, no differences in gain occurred among implants. To test the efficacy of rumen-protected lysine and methionine, six steers (486 lb) were used in a 6 4 incomplete Latin square design and fed corn-urea diets (85% concentrate) alone or supplemented with 2 or 4% soybean meal to give dietary crude protein levels of 12.5, 13.2, and 14.0% (as fed-basis). Each diet was fed with or without 5 g/day Smartamine-ML (rumen-protected lysine and methionine). Steers were fed to gain 2.6 lb/day. Six ruminally cannulated Holstein steers (550 lb) implanted with Revalor-S were infused abomasally with water or a mixture of six amino acids in a crossover experiment (two 14-day periods) to evaluate effects on nitrogen balance. The mixture was comprised of amino acids that potentially may be limiting in lightweight steers, namely (g/day): lysine (5.3), methionine (3.3), threonine (3.2), tryptophan (1 .0), histidine (2.1), and arginine (5.5). Steers were fed at levels just below ad libitum intake. The diet contained 86% rolled corn, 10% prairie hay, 3% mineral and vitamin premixes, and 1% urea (as-fed).
