Cytoembryological Studies On Sternbergia Lutea(L.)Ker-Gawl. Ex Sprengel ( Amaryllidaceae), Feruzan Dane

Turkish Journal of Biology

The cytological properties of megasporogenesis, megagametogenesis, proembryo and endosperm of the Sternbergia lutea(L.) Ker-Fawle ex sprengel ( Amaryllidaceace) plant were observed with a light microscope. It was observed that the ovules are of hemianatropous, bitegmic and pseudocrassinucellate types and the female archesporial cell developed directly into a megasporocyte. While the chalazal diad formed by successive meiosis of megasporocyte degenerates, micropylar diad underwent mitosis simultaneously forming an embryo sac of eight nuclei. Two synergids and an egg cell on the micropyle side, three antipod cell on the chalaza side and a secondary nucleus near the antipods were seen in a mature …

Esterase D And Abo Polymorphisms In Turkish Population, E. Ferda Perçin, Ilhan Sezgin, Ahmet Çolak, Ziynet Çinar

Turkish Journal of Biology

This study is intended to be a contribution to the determination of the genetic structure of the Turkish population. For this purpose, esterase D (ESD), an erythrocyte enzyme, and ABO blood group loci phenotypes from the blood samples of two hundred healthy and unrelated individuals from different regions of Turkey were determined. ESD enzyme phenotypes were determined by cellulose acetate electrophoresis, and ABO blood group phenotypes were determined by the aglutination test; in this way, allele frequencies were calculated. It was determined that the allele frequencies of the ESD enzyme were ESD*1=0.807±0.019, and ESD*2=0.193±0.019. The allele frequencies of the ABO …

Production Of \Alpha -Galactosidase Usingbacillus Stearothermophilusvar. Caldiloactis C953, E. Esin Kocabaş, Mücahit Di̇zbay

Turkish Journal of Biology

An intracellular, thermostable a-galactosidase (a-D-galactoside galactohydrolase EC 3.2.1.22.) was produced from a strain of Bacillus stearothermophilus var. calidolactis C953. It was found that the presence of NH 4 Cl in the fermentation medium affected microbial growth and that optimum enzyme production occurred with peptone in various sources of nitrogen where NH 4 Cl was used as the main inorganic nitrogen source. After peptone, in decreasing order of enzyme productivity, came tryptone, soybean meal, soya-neutralized peptone and casamino acid. It was determined that, in various carbon sources, raffinose produced the highest a-galactosidase activity, followed by melibiose, D-galactose and molasses, and that …

Turkish Journal of Biology

The qualitative effects of 24 different carbohydrates on the growth and survival of the black cricket Melanogryllus desertus Pall. were investigated by rearing the insect on synthetic diets. The results showed that the carbohydrates examined had different effects on the growth and survival of the insect. Rhamnose and lactose had inhibiting effects, whereas ribose, arabinose, xylose, galactose, sorbose, cellobiose, inuline and dulcitol produced an inert effect. Sucrose, maltose, glucose, fructose, mannose, trehalose, dextrin, glycogen, starch, sorbitol, manitol all had positive effects. Raffinose, mellibiose and inositol were utilized at very low levels by the black cricket. Of the monosaccharides, glucose promoted …

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effect of fish size on pigmentation of gold fish ( Carassius auratus) was ivestigated. The total carotenoid deposition in the skin of four different size groups of fish fed a diet containing zeaxanthin (75 mg/kg) for 60 days was determined spectrophotometrically. The results were as follows: 19.23±0.46 mg/kg for the 1.52 g weight group, 29.06±0.64 mg/kg for the 4.19 g weight group, 31.10±0.53 mg/kg for the 7.35 g weight group and 35.28±0.65 mg/kg for the 13.11 g weight group. According to these results, it was concluded that pigmentation increased with fish weight.

Analysis Of Binomial Data Obtained From Plant-Tissue-Culture Studiesusing Generalized Linear Models, M. Zi̇ya Firat, Ahmet Onay

Turkish Journal of Biology

In biology, the objective of research scientists is to gain an understanding of biological rela-tionships through experimentation. Statistical analyses are an essential part of biological research. Statistical methods used in biological research range from the very simple to the extremely complex. Consequently, caution should be taken when selecting an appropriate statistical method. Data obtained from plant-cell and tissue-culture studies can generally be placed into one of two or more groups. In other words, a dependent variable consists of placing an observation into a category. The purpose of this paper was to present statistical methods suitable for the analysis of binomial …

Biodegradation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, İsmai̇l Demi̇r, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ Jan 1999

Biodegradation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, İsmai̇l Demi̇r, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ

Turkish Journal of Biology

Polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as petroleum and petroleum derivatives, are widespread organic pollutants entering the environment, chiefly, through oil spills and incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Since most PAHs are persist in the environment for a long period of time and bioaccumulate, they cause environmental pollution and effect biological equilibrium dramatically. Biodegradation of some PAHs by microorganisms has been biochemically and genetically investigated. Gene locations for some of these pathways are frequently found in exrachromosomal elements. Determination, isolation and characterization of microorganisms which participate in the bidegradation of PAHs have great significance in the decontamination of the environment in …

Polarization which occurred normally in pollen mitosis and the divison stages were clearly observed. It was noted that pollens were …

Effects Of Cytokines On Cell Cycle, Hati̇ce Güneş Jan 1999

Effects Of Cytokines On Cell Cycle, Hati̇ce Güneş

Turkish Journal of Biology

Cytokines are cellular regulatory proteins. They are secreted by specific cells, which are activated by certain stimuli, in different tissues. Cytokines control numerous biological functions and one of their important effects is on cell division. Although some of the cytokines have a positive effect on the cell cycle, some play a negative role. The positive and negative effects of cytokines depend upon the cell type. In this paper, the moleculer mechanisms of cytokine effects on the cell cycle are examined.

As far as the fish which were fed and starved at 24°C were concerned, it has determi-ned that docosapentaenoic acid (C22:5) and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6), which are not found in fo-od could be synthesized and linoleic acid (C18:2) percentage was drastically decreased. According to the …

Turkish Journal of Biology

: The pollen mitosis and pollen morphology of hexaploid (2n=24) Bellevalia edirnensis Özhatay & Mathew were examined. Microspores exhibited variation in size, and the exine and aperture developed before pollen mitosis began. During pollen mitosis, polarization, asymmetric styles and normal divisions were observed together with some abnormalities. During polarization of the microspore both nucleus migration and vacuole formation were common. The generative nucleus was in the proximal pole and the vegetative nucleus was in the distal pole. It was also determined that the mature pollens were 2-celled, the shape of the pollens was sphaeroidea, the type of the pollens was …
