Investigation In The Physiology Of The Spore Formation Of Pseudoples Trifolii (Rostr.) And Petr., Emory S. Crosby

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Plant pathologists have worked to some extent for many years in an attempt to describe the complete physiology of the organism responsible for pepper spot of clover, particularly as found on white clover (Trifolium repens, L.). These works have not been extensive or concentrated and at the present time, no definite conclusions have been reached.

The causal agent of pepper spot of clover is Pseudoples trifolii (Rostr.).

Pseudoples trifolii usually is found parasitizing clover in the early spring and continues throughout the spring until the temperature exceeds thirty degrees centigrade. Elliott established that Pseudoples trifolii will not produce infectious spores …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study was undertaken with the idea of bringing together information concerning some of the most important Kentuckians who have made contributions to the biological sciences. In order that we may better understand and appreciate the work done by these men, it was thought best to give a brief discussion of the major periods in the history of biological development. An attempt will be made to interpret the contributions of the men discussed, according to the period in which they lived. Only a sufficient number of men are discussed in each epoch to give a correct picture of the trends …

The Effects Of Vitamins "A" & "D" Deficient Diets On Crayfish, Joseph Hale Aug 1936

The Effects Of Vitamins "A" & "D" Deficient Diets On Crayfish, Joseph Hale

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The literature on vitamins shows that the greater number of the studies made of vitamin "A" and "D" deficient diets have been confined to their efforts on the vertebrates. Only a few controlled experiments have been conducted to determine the effects of vitamin "A" and "D" deficient diets on the invertebrates.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of vitamin "A" and "D" deficient diets on crayfish.

Pigment Migration In The Eye Of Forbesichthys Papilliferus, Harld Welborn Jun 1936

Pigment Migration In The Eye Of Forbesichthys Papilliferus, Harld Welborn

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Previous studies conducted in these laboratories showed the pigment in the eye of Forbesichthys papilliferus, when exposed to light, migrated from the stratum pigmenti into the layer of rods and cones. It was thought advisable to investigate this matter further. The following lines of investigation were conducted, viz:

  1. to determine the rate at which the pigment migrates from the stratum pimenti into the layer of rods and cones when exposed to sunlight;
  2. to determine the rate at which the pigment migrates from the stratum pigmenti into the layer of rods and cones when exposed to artificial light; and
  3. to determine …

A Comparative Pollution Study Of The Domestic Water Supply Of Warren County, Kentucky, Glenn Scott Aug 1935

A Comparative Pollution Study Of The Domestic Water Supply Of Warren County, Kentucky, Glenn Scott

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The domestic water supply of Warren County, outside of the city of Bowling Green, is obtained from deep wells and springs. The county is about evenly divided into a southern section of cavernous limestone and a northern section of mixed sandstone and limestone formations.

The wells of the southern cavernous limestone region receive water from unfiltered underground streams and lakes. Most of the wells of the northern region are drilled in sandstone and the water, in a majority of cases, is filtered through porous sandstone and shale.

The purpose of this study was to make a comparative pollution study of …

The Phaenogams Of Western Kentucky University State Teachers College, Gertrude Raymond

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The campus of Western Kentucky State Teachers College was laid out in 1910 by Mr. Henry Wright, landscape architect, with the view of planting ornamental shrubs and woody and herbaceous plants indigenous to Kentucky. In more recent years the gardens on the grounds of the Kentucky Building have been planted with many species of Kentucky plants.

This study was undertaken for the purpose of making a scientific classification of the flowering plants on the campus of Western Kentucky State Teachers College.

A Comparative Histological Study Of The Eyes Of Certain Cave Animals, William Owsley Aug 1935

A Comparative Histological Study Of The Eyes Of Certain Cave Animals, William Owsley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As early as 1850 many reports of observations of the blind cave animals were made by both scientific and popular writers. Tellkempf, Agassiz, Forbes and Silliman were some of the earlier scientists who studied the eyes of cave animals. Eigenmann made a histological study of the cave vertebrates of America. In a study of Forbesichthys papilliferus, a semi-blind cave fish, Jennie Miller Orr found important structural modifications in the eyes of this species. Since no comparative histological studies of the eyes of cave animals seem to have been made, it was decided to make such a study with a view …

Studies On A Cave Fish Of Uncertain Classification, Jennie Miller Orr Aug 1934

Studies On A Cave Fish Of Uncertain Classification, Jennie Miller Orr

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The specimens studied during this investigation were taken incidentally during a general faunal survey of certain peculiar streams flowing from underground channels. On casual examination it was evident that they belonged to the cave fish group but were not the well known almost colorless blind variety. After checking the descriptions in various vertebrate manuals it appeared that they were probably a new species.

There are three groups of cave fishes, the non-blind, the semi-blind and the blind. Chologaster, or the Rice Field Minnows of South Carolina, are members of the non-blind group. Forbesichthys of southern Illinois and Kentucky is an …

The Bottom Fauna Of Drakes Creek: A Quantitative & Qualitative Study, Theodore Milam Jun 1934

The Bottom Fauna Of Drakes Creek: A Quantitative & Qualitative Study, Theodore Milam

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An ecological study of the invertebrate animal forms exclusive of microscopic forms found in the waters of Drakes Creek in Warren County, Kentucky, was undertaken for the purpose of determining both the nature and amount of invertebrate animal life found in these waters. The Kentucky Fish and Game Commission has made several plantings of game fish in the waters studied. However, the fishermen report no appreciable increase of the fish life in these waters. In view of the failure of the fish to propagate properly in these waters, and because the other physical factors appeared favorable for the propagation of …

A Study Of The Tolerance Of Certain Species Of Fishes For Low Dissolved Oxygen & Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Charles Allen Aug 1933

A Study Of The Tolerance Of Certain Species Of Fishes For Low Dissolved Oxygen & Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Charles Allen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Extensive investigations have been made of the oxygen end carbon dioxide content of water in which fishes live. A review of the literature, however, shows that these studies have not been made under controlled laboratory conditions dealing with the species studied in this investigation. It was the purpose of this study to determine the lowest concentration of dissolved oxygen that will support certain species of fishes and, also, the lethal effects resulting from increased carbon dioxide tension as determined under carefully controlled laboratory conditions.
