The Influence Of Music On Preferred Intensity And Associated Physiological Responses, David Nuckols Nov 2003

The Influence Of Music On Preferred Intensity And Associated Physiological Responses, David Nuckols

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Music is a part of everyday life and has an effect on people in many different ways. Music can be as individual as the person who listens to it, and thus there are many genres for many different tastes. Music has accompanied exercise and sport for quite some time. It has been shown to have varying psychophysical effects including decreasing ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) at a given sub-max intensity, enhancing arousal control, and affective states at high and medium intensities. Also the improved synchronization of sub-maximal exercise with music may result in increased work output. The proposed ability of …

Skeletal Myosin Heavy Chain Function In Cultured Lung Myofibroblasts, Nancy A. Rice, Leslie A. Leinwand Oct 2003

Skeletal Myosin Heavy Chain Function In Cultured Lung Myofibroblasts, Nancy A. Rice, Leslie A. Leinwand

Biology Faculty Publications

Myofibroblasts are unique contractile cells with both muscle and nonmuscle properties. Typically myofibroblasts are identified by the expression of smooth muscle actin (ASMA); however some myofibroblasts also express sarcomeric proteins. In this study, we show that pulmonary myofibroblasts express three of the eight known sarcomeric myosin heavy chains (MyHCs) (IIa, IId, and embryonic) and that skeletal muscle myosin enzymatic activity is required for pulmonary myofibroblast contractility. Furthermore, inhibition of skeletal myosin activity and myofibroblast contraction results in a decrease in both ASMA and skeletal MyHC promoter activity and ASMA protein expression, suggesting a potential coupling of skeletal myosin activity and …

Predicting Student Success In The Introduction To Animal Science Course At Western Kentucky University, Margaret Zoglmann Aug 2003

Predicting Student Success In The Introduction To Animal Science Course At Western Kentucky University, Margaret Zoglmann

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Student predictors may be useful to universities in determining students' future success in college courses. The students enrolled in Introduction to Animal Science (ANSC 140) at Western Kentucky University participated in the study. The students completed identical subjective and objective assessments at the beginning and the end of the semester they were enrolled in the course. Students ranked their knowledge of course matter on a scale of 1 to 100 for each of the 49 course outcomes. Additionally, students completed a demographic survey at the beginning of the course. The final student knowledge assessment tool was a 50 question multiple-choice …

Efficacy Of Herbicide Combination On Burley And Dark-Air Cured Tobacco, Joanna Coles Aug 2003

Efficacy Of Herbicide Combination On Burley And Dark-Air Cured Tobacco, Joanna Coles

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The efficacy of herbicide combination on burley and dark air-cured tobacco Nictotiana tabacum were tested in field research plots in the summer of 2000 at Western Kentucky University's Agricultural Research and Education Complex. The randomized complete block design contained six treatments replicated three times in each of the two experiments (burley and dark air-cured tobacco). Transplants (cv. 'TN 97' and cv. 'KY 160') were established on June 2, 2000 in a conventionally tilled Pembroke silt loam soil with a pH of 6.5 and organic matter content of 12 g/kg. Herbicide treatments were applied on June 1, 2000 with a CO2 …

Acute Cardiovascular Response And Perception Of Effort Between The Super Slow And Gold Standard Resistance Training Protocols, Phillip Wickwire Jul 2003

Acute Cardiovascular Response And Perception Of Effort Between The Super Slow And Gold Standard Resistance Training Protocols, Phillip Wickwire

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Super Slow training was proposed by Ken Hutchins in a book entitled Super Slow: The Ultimate Exercise Protocol (1992). Since then Super Slow training has been proposed to improve strength more effectively than traditional resistance training and improve cardiovascular measures above aerobic exercise. However, whether this type of training is safe for the older, possibly hypertensive population to which it is being targeted is questionable. To help provide an answer to this question the purpose of this study was to measure blood pressure, heart rate (HR), and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) while performing the Super Slow resistance training protocol …

In Vitro Regeneration And Genetic Transformation Of Sesbania Drummondii: A Medicinally And Environmentally Important Plant, Satish Cheepala Jul 2003

In Vitro Regeneration And Genetic Transformation Of Sesbania Drummondii: A Medicinally And Environmentally Important Plant, Satish Cheepala

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study describes rapid propagation of Sesbania drummondii using nodal explants isolated from seedlings and young plants. The nodal segments proliferated into multiple shoots on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 22.2 /M benzyladenine. Murashige and Skoog medium containing 2.2 and 4.5 //M thidiazuron induced 5 - 6 healthier shoots per axillary node from 3-month-old plants. Nodal segments cultured on MS medium containing combinations of benzyladenine (8.8 and 11.1 /JM) and either indole-3-butyric acid (0.24 - 2.46 //M) or indole-3-acetic acid (0.28 - 2.85 //M) produced fewer shoots. Callus when subcultured on 2.2 /LihA thidiazuron containing medium resulted in …

Rpe "Drift" In Fit And Unfit Males Cycling In A Hot And Cool Environment, Robert Pritchett May 2003

Rpe "Drift" In Fit And Unfit Males Cycling In A Hot And Cool Environment, Robert Pritchett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The potential influence of aerobic fitness on RPE estimations during extended exercise bouts is not well understood. The current study compared RPE-Overall, RPE-Legs and RPE-Chest between fit (n=7) and unfit (n=6) males. Subjects completed a graded cycling test and then, in a counterbalanced order, on two separate days cycled for 60min (intensity~90% of the Onset of Blood Lactate Accumulation (OBLA) - determined via gas exchange indices) at 30}1 degrees Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) and 18}1 degrees WBGT. Heart rate (HR), rectal temperature (Tree) and overall and differentiated RPE estimations were collected every 5 minutes. Repeated measures analyses of variance …

Power, Privilege, And Special Interests: Rent Seeking And Subsidies In Agriculture, Matt Bogard Jan 2003

Power, Privilege, And Special Interests: Rent Seeking And Subsidies In Agriculture, Matt Bogard

Agriculture Department Seminar Series

This presentation covers what Public Choice economists refer to as ‘rent seeking,’ generally seeking favor or special privilege from government through subsidies or regulatory advantages. Particularly, the biotech industry is the area of focus for this presentation. Problems with rent seeking in the biotech industry involve less innovation and industry consolidation. Policies related to biotech regulation, school lunch programs, the Clean Air Act, and ethanol subsidies are discussed. A game theoretic approach is used and it is concluded that issues related to rent seeking and special interests are not adequately addressed by recent campaign finance reform efforts. Alternatives such as …

Holistic, Preventative, And Alternative Medicine As Incorporated In Today's U.S. Medical School And Medical Practices, Marcelle Beall

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This research explored not only the role of alternative medical programs in allopathic medical schools but also examined the attitudes of physicians in both areas of health care. Twenty-three physicians, about half of whom were MDs and half who were DOs, were interviewed. Additionally, visits were made to three osteopathic medical schools to tour their facilities, interview personnel, and study their curricula. The similarities and differences in allopathic and osteopathic medicine were then assessed.

Charting The Bird Populations Of Mammoth Cave National Park, Kristen Jones Jan 2003

Charting The Bird Populations Of Mammoth Cave National Park, Kristen Jones

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This thesis documented the bird species at Mammoth Cave National Park in south-central Kentucky. Bird species populations were documented as increasing, decreasing, or extirpated, meaning they were no longer seen in the Mammoth Cave National Park area. We found that the majority of the populations had remained unchanged due to strict management policies adhered to by Mammoth Cave National Park.
