Bulletin No. 243 - Distribution And Damage By Jointwork Flies In Utah, G. F. Knowlton, Melvin J. Janes

UAES Bulletins

The purpose of this investigation has been to determine the distribution and extent of injury of some of the more important jointworm flies attacking small grains. These obscure enemies exact a yearly toll by causing a subtle shrinkage in the weight and a decrease in quality of grain yields and, incidentally, a shrinkage in the profits derived from the farmer's labors, In general, jointworm flies may be controlled by simple, previously-known methods of improved farm practices, requiring no additional outlay in cash but a better timing and proper execution of good farm practices.

The establishment of the Bear River Bay Bird Refuge has created for the state of Utah an immense and valuable biological field, a veritable paradise for naturalist and sportsman alike. The naturalist wants a place to study wild life and the sportsman desires game. With the proper control of open seasons on wild fowl the hunting instinct and incentive for the sport should be satisfied for the sportsman. To the naturalist this region will open up bountiful treasures of knowledge that is to be gained only by intense and prolonged scientific study.

Inheritance Of Resistance To Loose Smut (U. Tritici) In Certain Wheat Crosses, Bion Tolman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During recent years the principles of Mendelism have been used extensively in the production of the new types of plants possessing resistance to various diseases. Results of this mode of attacking the disease problem have been very favorable. Old varieties are gradually giving way to newer types equal to or exceeding in quality and productivity as well as possessing resistance to one or more diseases.

Loose smut (U. tritici) in wheat, while not as serious a problem in Utah as the covered smut (T. tritici), according to Tapke (14) has caused an average annual loss of between 50,000 and 100,000 …

Pasteurized Versus Raw Milk In Brick Cheese-Making, Z. Doyle Roundy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The prime object of the work undertaken in the present study has been done with the view of determining whether or not the quality and yield of brick cheese may be improved by pasteurizing the milk from which the cheese is made. An effort should be made to put brick cheese-making on a more scientific basis and at the same time produce cheese of better and more uniform quality. Since milk, containing large numbers of undesirable microorganisms thus causing objectionable flavors and odors in dairy products, is frequently delivered to cheese factories to be processed, pasteurization seems to be one …
