The Vitamin A Content Of Skimmilk, Standardized Milk, And Cream From Different Breeds Of Cows, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
A study was made of the vitamin A content of skimmilk, of milk standardized by the addition of separated milk, and of cream. Rats whose body stores of vitamin A had been depleted by being fed a vitamin A deficient ration were fed either skimmilk, standardized milk, or cream as a source of vitamin A. Approximately 750 rats were used in nine experiments. From the results of these experiments the following conclusions were drawn: (1) that the vitamin A content of milk is associated largely with the butterfat and that separated milk containing a small quantity of fat contains only …

Notes On Texas Crustacea, S. W. Geiser
Field and Laboratory
The accumulation, during the past few years, of data relative to the occurrence in Texas of species of Crustacea not credited, in the usual handbooks, to our fauna, has induced the present writer to assemble in a brief note such observations as seem of particular interest.
A Comparison Of Hardness In Dallas Water Before And After Treatment In The City Water Plant, W. D. Frazell, Henry Lewelling
A Comparison Of Hardness In Dallas Water Before And After Treatment In The City Water Plant, W. D. Frazell, Henry Lewelling
Field and Laboratory
A measurement of the change in hardness produced in raw water by the usual treatment in the city purification plant of Dallas, Texas, was a project undertaken by the class in elementary quantitative analysis. The treatment which would affect the hardness was the addition of ferrous sulphate and lime at the time the water was pumped into the settling basins, and filtration through gravel. In making this comparison, the total alkalinity, temporary hardness, and permanent hardness of raw water and water after treatment, were determined. Raw water samples were taken as the water entered the purification plant; samples of treated …

An Annotated List Of The Snails Of Dallas County Texas, Elmer P. Cheatum, Charles E. Burt
Field and Laboratory
Although great advances have been made in the study of many groups of Texas animals, the knowledge of the Mollusca is still very meager....[I]t is apparent that the study of Texas snails is only just begun and that there exists a need for careful and continued collecting in numerous counties. A molluscan survey of individual counties has been started by the senior author with the hope of ultimately bringing together a large mass of data to support a comprehensive and authentic treatment of the snails of Texas.

A Simplified Method For The Preparation Of Butyric Acid, Lallance A. Adair, E. J. Simmons
Field and Laboratory
As an elective experiment in the class in organic preparations it was decided to make pure butyric acid from n-butyl acetate. To accomplish this the plan followed was (1) the hydrolysis of the ester to obtain n-butyl alcohol, (2) the oxidation of the alcohol to the acid, and (3) the separation of the acid from the mixture.

Chicle Exploitation In The Sapodilla Forest Of The Yucatan Peninsula, Cyrus Longworth Lundell
Field and Laboratory
The dominant forest tree of the virgin bush areas of the Yucatan Peninsula is the sapodilla, Achras Zapota L., important commercially as the source of chicle, the basis of chewing gum. From Cape Catoche to Lake Peten it is one of the most frequent species, characterizing this limestone region, which is a phytogeographic unit with a typical flora
A Geographic Study Of The Carrollton Area, Robert C. Dunlap, Claude C. Albritton Jr.
A Geographic Study Of The Carrollton Area, Robert C. Dunlap, Claude C. Albritton Jr.
Field and Laboratory
The Carrollton Area, as considered in this paper, includes approximately seventy square miles in the northwestern corner of Dallas County. Two small towns, Carrollton (popu lation 689) and Farmers Branch (population 400), were im portant centers in the early days of settlement, but the rapid growth of Dallas, a few miles to the southeast, has delegated to these communities the roles of satellites to the larger urban center. Three railroads intersect at Carrollton, and both towns are on the Dallas-Denton paved highway.

Effect Of Frequent Clipping On The Development Of Roots And Tops Of Grasses In Prairie Sod, Harold Biswell, J. E. Weaver
Effect Of Frequent Clipping On The Development Of Roots And Tops Of Grasses In Prairie Sod, Harold Biswell, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
A study has been made of the regeneration of bluestem grasses in ex- closures in continuously grazed native pastures. The persistence of remnants of the bunches or mats of sod in old pastures for a long period of years is of interest, as is also their gradual but slow rate of recovery under protection when they are greatly weakened. Even in low, fertile, well watered soil, a period of three or four years must elapse before such species as Andropogon furcatus and Sorghastrum nutans produce the usual abundance of flowers stalks and large quantities of viable seed. The first summer …

An Analysis Of The Habitat Distribution Of The Fauna Of A Stream- Bank Association In Western Kansas, Olive Falls
An Analysis Of The Habitat Distribution Of The Fauna Of A Stream- Bank Association In Western Kansas, Olive Falls
Master's Theses
This present paper is chiefly concerned with the distribution of animals. The environmental and faunal conditions of Western Kansas have not been studied, and they are rapidly changing, due to human occupancy of the region. Therefore, a major object of this report is to put on record information in regard to the present vertebrate animal life in Western Kansas. Profound changes in the native conditions have already been recognized; for example, many animals have become extinct, and others are gradually vanishing. It is in the hope of contributing something of the facts of the status of the species in this …

Farm Mortgage History Of Eleven Southeastern Nebraska Townships 1870-1932, Eleanor H. Hinman, J. O. Rankin
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
It is believed that a study of a complete record of all farm mortgages for a typical although very limited Nebraska farming area from 1870 through 1932 may be of interest (1) as a sample of the farm mortgage history of the western part of the corn belt, (2) as a contribution to analyzing some of the sources of agricultural credit and the use made of them, (3) as an illustration of the relation of farm mortgages to land and commodity prices, farm income, and banking resources, and (4) as an example of the mortgage problems of corn belt farmers …

The Relation Of The Native Forest Cover To The Physical And Chemical Nature Of The Soils Of The Mammoth Cave National Park Area, Sheppard Walker
The Relation Of The Native Forest Cover To The Physical And Chemical Nature Of The Soils Of The Mammoth Cave National Park Area, Sheppard Walker
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining the relation existing between the native forest cover and the chemical and physical properties of the soils of the Mammoth Cave National Park area. The study was suggested by certain references in the literature to a correlation existing between forest cover and the geological, chemical and physical nature of soils of this area. The recent attempt at reforestation in the Mammoth Cave National Park area renders such a study timely, and it is believed that the results reported in this paper will materially aid the Mammoth Cave National Park Commission and …
A Study Of The Tolerance Of Certain Species Of Fishes For Low Dissolved Oxygen & Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Charles Allen
A Study Of The Tolerance Of Certain Species Of Fishes For Low Dissolved Oxygen & Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Charles Allen
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Extensive investigations have been made of the oxygen end carbon dioxide content of water in which fishes live. A review of the literature, however, shows that these studies have not been made under controlled laboratory conditions dealing with the species studied in this investigation. It was the purpose of this study to determine the lowest concentration of dissolved oxygen that will support certain species of fishes and, also, the lethal effects resulting from increased carbon dioxide tension as determined under carefully controlled laboratory conditions.
Fishes Of The Mammoth Cave Region, John Sterling Jackson
Fishes Of The Mammoth Cave Region, John Sterling Jackson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Extensive surveys of the ichthyological fauna have been made for states bordering Kentucky. An investigation of the literature pertaining to the ichthyology of Kentucky discloses the fact that no detailed investigation has been made of fish life in this state, especially western Kentucky. No record is available of any survey having been made in the section known as the Mammoth Cave Region.
The purpose of this survey was to make a species and ecological study of the fishes of the Mammoth Cave Region. Extensive opportunity for ecological studies exists in this region, but only the most important factors were included …

Bulletin No. 243 - Distribution And Damage By Jointwork Flies In Utah, G. F. Knowlton, Melvin J. Janes
Bulletin No. 243 - Distribution And Damage By Jointwork Flies In Utah, G. F. Knowlton, Melvin J. Janes
UAES Bulletins
The purpose of this investigation has been to determine the distribution and extent of injury of some of the more important jointworm flies attacking small grains. These obscure enemies exact a yearly toll by causing a subtle shrinkage in the weight and a decrease in quality of grain yields and, incidentally, a shrinkage in the profits derived from the farmer's labors, In general, jointworm flies may be controlled by simple, previously-known methods of improved farm practices, requiring no additional outlay in cash but a better timing and proper execution of good farm practices.
