Small Grains: 2005 Variety Recommendations (2004 Crop Performance Results), Cooperative Extension Service, South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Circulars

Variety selection is a fundamental element in a sound crop production program. This report contains variety recommendations, descriptions, and yield data for the spring-seeded small grains – hard red spring wheat, oat, and barley, along with the fall-seeded small grain –hard red winter wheat. Key factors in variety selection include yield, yield stability, maturity, straw strength, height, test weight, quality, and disease resistance. Yield is an important factor; however, a variety with good disease resistance, straw strength, and high grain quality may be more profitable in some cases than the highest yielding variety. Disease resistance information is based on reactions …

Planning Prices And Livestock Budgets For Farm Management Programs, Burton Pflueger Jan 1999

Planning Prices And Livestock Budgets For Farm Management Programs, Burton Pflueger

SDSU Extension Circulars

The budgets in this publication are based on approved farming practices and nutritionally balanced rations. Feed ingredients are priced on their comparative feed values. Com is used as the base for feed grain and other grains are priced based on their relative feed value to com. Alfalfa hay is used as the base for roughage. All roughage and succulents are priced as a percent of alfalfa hay. The livestock husbandman who uses the least-cost rations should not see significant changes in profitability by interchanging feed ingredients.

Farm Machinery Costs: Own Lease Or Custom Hire, Burton W. Pflueger, Larry Madsen, Alan May, Curtis Hoyt Jan 1994

Farm Machinery Costs: Own Lease Or Custom Hire, Burton W. Pflueger, Larry Madsen, Alan May, Curtis Hoyt

SDSU Extension Circulars

One of the largest annual costs on South Dakota farms and ranches today is that of owning and operating machinery. Total costs associated with farm machinery have increased as farm operators have expanded their operations and substituted machines for labor. This trend does not appear to have run its course because new and larger machines are continuously being developed and adopted. Along with these changes have been corresponding increases in productivity per worker, average farm size, and total machinery investment. In many cases, increased investment in machinery has occurred at the expense of operating capital. Farmers have had to invest …

Alfalfa Seed Production, Lyle A. Derscheid, Robert J. Walstrom Jan 1981

Alfalfa Seed Production, Lyle A. Derscheid, Robert J. Walstrom

SDSU Extension Circulars

Alfalfa seed has high market value: producing certified adapted seed can become a more important enterprise for some South Dakota farmers. Around 100,000 acres are harvested for seed each year, but tho yield per acre is relatively low. Most producers harvest seed on a hit-and-miss basis. Only a few treat alfalfa seed as a major crop. Much of the alfalfa seed planted in South Dakota is raised in southern Idaho, eastern Oregon, southeastern Washington, and the San Joaquin Valley of California. But the acreage of certified seed of varieties recommended for South Dakota is gradually shrinking in western states. These …

Irrigating Alfalfa In South Dakota, James R. Johnson, Charles R. Krueger, Lyle A. Derscheid, Darrel D. Pehl, Paul L. Carson Jan 1980

Irrigating Alfalfa In South Dakota, James R. Johnson, Charles R. Krueger, Lyle A. Derscheid, Darrel D. Pehl, Paul L. Carson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Alfalfa performs admirably an irrigated crop in South Dakota-so well that it is often neglected. When given attention, it can realistically maintain irrigated yields of 6 to 7 TIA each year in most of South Dakota where 1 to 2 T are produced on dryland. Irrigated land that will produce 100-130 bu corn will produce 5-7 T alfalfa. On poorer irrigated land that produces 50-70 hu corn, one can expect 3-5 T alfalfa. Alfalfa has higher water requirements for peak yields than most other crops. It may not reach its full potential yield in any part of the stale without …

To encourage through training programs greater utilization of the unemployed and underemployed human resources of the reservation population. To teach better nutrition and food habits and to improve the uses of surplus food commodities distributed to welfare clients. To teach sound ranch management principles to Indian ranch …

The Family And Free Time, Agricultural Extension Service Jan 1963

The Family And Free Time, Agricultural Extension Service

SDSU Extension Circulars

Today Americans have more leisure than any people have ever had; yet they seem to find little real enjoyment in what they do. A recent observation suggests that the poverty-stricken may soon be replaced by the leisure-stricken. People are indulging in more activities, going more places, spending more money than ever befort; yet few recognize the need for more thoughtfulness about the use of leisure time in family living.

On-The-Farm Swine Selection, L.J. Kortan Jan 1963

On-The-Farm Swine Selection, L.J. Kortan

SDSU Extension Circulars

In attempts to make selection more effective, swine breeders have become increasingly conscious of the importance of a good swine breeding program and of the part that heredity plays in improving performance and carcass quality. Breeders no longer select breeding stock on the basis of sight alone. Modern selection programs emphasize performance records and carcass cut-out values. This is desirable because research has indicated that visual inspection alone cannot identify animals which are genetically superior. Good feeding and management can result in larger, faster growing litters. However, these improvements in nutrition and management do not become a part of a …

South Dakota Controlled Environment Poultry Housing, Boyd Bonzer, Louis Lubinus Jan 1963

South Dakota Controlled Environment Poultry Housing, Boyd Bonzer, Louis Lubinus

SDSU Extension Circulars

An efficient, practical poultry house is an asset to a farm. It need not be expensive to give good results. Sometimes a building already on the farm can be remodeled inexpensively to serve the needs of hens; however, for larger flocks seriously consider new housing. A poultry house must protect the birds from the hot sun in summer, cold temperatures in winter, and temperature extremes in spring and fall. It must also provide for moisture removal and be a comfortable, dry place for the hens. Such a house will increase production lower feed cost, produce cleaner eggs, and save labor. …

Irrigation Farming In The Oahe Area Dryland, Rex Helfinstine Jan 1963

Irrigation Farming In The Oahe Area Dryland, Rex Helfinstine

SDSU Extension Circulars

Farmers in the proposed Oahe irrigation area of east-central South Dakota could have water available for irrigation within about 10 years. In less time, however, they must decide if they want to convert part of their dryland to irrigated farming. A decision must be made shortly because of the: ( 1) Necessity of contracting with the Oahe Conservancy Subdistrict and the Bureau of Reclamation for irrigation water supply works and diversion of water from Oahe reservoir, and, ( 2) Need to adjust long-range farm plans in line with the decision. How profitable is irrigation farming as compared to dryland farming? …

You'll note that this publication is written primarily to help you sew for yourself. However, you may want to apply the information to sewing for other members of the family and friends.

Enjoy Christmas Music, Kay Nelson Jan 1961

Enjoy Christmas Music, Kay Nelson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Today it is hard to realize that Christmas was once a subject of strenuous controversy. Its religious observance was the source of bitter denominational quarrels during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Large groups of colonists objected to Christmas at that time. For the Church of England, the Feast of the Nativity was one of the most important of the year, yet the English Puritans condemned it. Eventually attention turned to the realm of economics and politics so that religious controversies, including that of Christmas observance, became of less importance. The American Constitution established separation of church and state and gradually …
