Farm To Retail Price Spreads, Edward Dailey

SDSU Extension Circulars

he differences between the farm value and the retail cost of farm-food has long been a sore point with both consumers and producers. Whenever food prices rise noticeably consumers are inclined to believe that farmers are receiving the benefit. Farmers look at the prices in the towns and cities and then at the prices they are paid and wonder who gets the difference. Higher consumer incomes and prices paid to let farmers during recent war years have let the controversy die down somewhat, but know that prices are declining old queries are urgently renewed.

Control Household Insects, John A. Lofgren

SDSU Extension Circulars

The development and general acceptance of the new insecticides has greatly helped housewives in their battles with insects found in the home. Yet the use of these chemicals does not rule out the importance of sanitation and good housekeeping in preventing the establishment of these pests. Sanitation is a basic principle of pest control. Insects found in South Dakota homes destroy and contaminate foods and ruin fabrics. Some attack our dwellings and other buildings; others bite or annoy humans, carrying diseases and causing irritation or secondary infections. The presence of other insects merely constitutes a nuisance. Even the most well-kept …

SDSU Extension Circulars

Farmers and ranchers whose average hay production exceeds ,350 tons per year have been faced with a serious labor shortage .and are in need of a means of cutting the cost of production. Plans for a livable home provide for adequate storage. Plenty of good storage space will save time and energy for the family and will simplify home life. The trend is for more built-ins-many and different kinds of closets, cabinets, chests and storage walls. Some of these storage walls are portable but look built-in. Whether you are building new, remodeling, or trying to make your home more livable, plan for lots of good storage. It may …

Debeaking is the practice of taking off part of the upper beak of a bird. This removes the part they pinch and tear flesh with, making it extremely difficult for them to be cannibalistic. The process can be accomplished with an electric debeaker, using a hot blade that cauterizes the wound as it cuts, preventing excessive bleeding.
