Soil Type More Than Precipitation Determines Fine-Root Abundance In Savannas Of Kruger National Park, South Africa, Andrew Kulmatiski, Sydney R.C. Sprouse, Karen H. Beard May 2017

Soil Type More Than Precipitation Determines Fine-Root Abundance In Savannas Of Kruger National Park, South Africa, Andrew Kulmatiski, Sydney R.C. Sprouse, Karen H. Beard

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Aims Our aim was to examine how soil type and precipitation affect fine-root abundance in savanna ecosystems across Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa. Methods Fine-root distributions were measured in four sites that represent the natural factorial combination of soil types (basalt-derived clay or granite-derived sand) and precipitation regimes [wet (~750 mm mean annual precipitation) or dry (~500 mm mean annual precipitation)] that occur in KNP. Root area and biomass (at soil depths of 0–75 cm) were estimated from measurements of root number, length and width in images from minirhizotron tubes at each site. Measurements were made during one mid-season …

DEEPEND Datasets

The deep sea ecosystem is believed to contain the highest biomass of fish in the oceans. However, the taxonomic diversity in this ecosystem is incompletely described and likely to be vastly underestimated. DNA sequence data (barcodes) have become a key tool to discover hidden biodiversity. We generated mitochondrial DNA barcode datasets based on the Cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene from deep sea fishes. These data were analyzed using phylogenetic and statistical methods to reveal cryptic species and make taxonomic linkages between adult fishes and their early life stages. These datasets were generated from fishes collected in the Northern Gulf …

Susceptibility Of Chlamydia Trachomatis To The Excipient Hydroxy-Ethylcellulose: Ph And Concentration Dependence Of Antimicrobial Activity, Ali A. Abdul-Sater, David M. Ojcius, M. P. Meyer Apr 2017

Susceptibility Of Chlamydia Trachomatis To The Excipient Hydroxy-Ethylcellulose: Ph And Concentration Dependence Of Antimicrobial Activity, Ali A. Abdul-Sater, David M. Ojcius, M. P. Meyer

David M. Ojcius

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as a neutral excipient in microbicides used against sexually transmitted pathogens. However, HEC inhibits the infection of cervical epithelial cells by Chlamydia trachomatis at pH 5 in a concentration-dependent manner. At pH 7, infection is inversely dependent on the concentration of HEC, possibly due to pH-dependent calcium sequestration.

The Use Of Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Predict Thymine Dimer Formation In Histone Bound Dna, Emily Ann Brune Heinsen Apr 2017

The Use Of Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Predict Thymine Dimer Formation In Histone Bound Dna, Emily Ann Brune Heinsen

CUP Undergraduate Research

Thymine dimers are the major lesions in DNA that are caused by environmental conditions that can lead to apoptosis or can become carcinogenic (Schreier, et al., 2007). These dimers form when the pi electrons of one thymine in a neighboring thymine pair is excited by a photon from UV light, and occurs on the picosecond time scale (Schreier, et al., 2007). Due to the ultrafast nature of this reaction, the thymines must be in proper conformation prior to excitation in order for the reaction to take place. The proper conformation for the reaction has been found to occur when the …

The Need For Better Measurement And Employee Engagement To Advance A Circular Economy: Lessons From Biogen Zero Waste Journey, Vesela R. Veleva, Gavin Bodkin, Svetlana Todorova Feb 2017

The Need For Better Measurement And Employee Engagement To Advance A Circular Economy: Lessons From Biogen Zero Waste Journey, Vesela R. Veleva, Gavin Bodkin, Svetlana Todorova

Vesela Veleva

The movement toward “zero waste” and circular economy has recently gained traction as an alternative to the dominant “take-make-waste” model of production and as a viable approach for addressing climate change. Business plays a key role in this transition and a growing number of companies are establishing waste reduction goals, such as “zero waste to landfill” as part of their sustainability commitments. This study however, suggests that companies’ efforts presently are inadequate to support such a transition; companies lack effective sustainability indicators to measure progress, identify opportunities, and engage employees. While the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines provide standardized indicators …

Cephalopod Biodiversity In The Vicinity Of Bear Seamount, Western North Atlantic Based On Exploratory Trawling From 2000 To 2014, Elizabeth K. Shea, Heather Judkins, Michelle D. Staudinger, Valerie H. Dimkovikj

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bear Seamount (BSM) is the most inshore seamount in the New England Seamount chain. It is located within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone and is contained within the recently established Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. In 2000, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Systematics Laboratory began an exploratory trawling program to document nekton diversity at BSM and its vicinity. Here, we summarize eight exploratory sampling cruises conducted between 2000 and 2014, and describe the cephalopod biodiversity and assemblage structure around BSM. Over the course of 174 deep–midwater and 56 bottom tows, 5088 cephalopods were identified, measured, …
