During the spring of 2021, the Kansas State University Swine Early Wean Facility (SEW) experienced a notable increase in piglet morbidity and mortality. Piglet diarrhea was observed approximately 2 to 3 weeks post-weaning along with an increase in number of sudden mortalities. Necropsy samples were collected and confirmed for clinical diagnosis ofEscherichia coliK88 infection by the Kansas State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.E. coliK88 can negatively impact performance of pigs and typically manifests as diarrhea, which can continue until death because of severe dehydration and metabolic acidosis or from terminal septicemia. Feeding a greater percentage of whole pellets to poultry and swine provides a greater return on investment for producers. Pellet binders are commonly used in commercial feed mills, but the added cost has limited their use in poultry and swine feed mills. A total of 360 weanling pigs (200 × 400, DNA; initially 21.4 ± 0.23 lb BW) were used in a 21-d experiment with 6 pigs/pen, 10 replicate pens/treatment, and 2 separate nursery rooms, each with 30 pens. A total of 1,827 pigs (L337 × 1050, PIC; initially 215.8 ± 2.5 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of increasing soybean meal (SBM) in corn-DDGS-based diets on growth performance of late finishing pigs. Pens were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 5 dietary treatments with 14 replications per treatment. Experimental diets were corn-based with 25% DDGS. Reducing the particle size of grains increases the ratio of surface area to volume which provides digestive enzymes greater access to nutrients, therefore improving utilization of the feed. Hammermills are a very cost-effective method of reducing grains to very fine particle sizes for feeding. A variety of settings can be changed on hammermills to achieve a target particle size. Glo germ, a fluorescent powder, was used to determine the efficacy of common biosecurity practices to prevent the powder from spreading to other areas within a commercial swine farm. The areas tested included an entry bench, the shower where all incoming personnel are required to shower upon farm entry and exit, the clean area following the shower, and inside the barn, which acted as the control with no biosecurity procedures in place given it is fully contained within the broader biosecurity measures of the facility. There are increasing requests by pet owners to pet food manufacturers to formulate diets with fewer synthetic additives in favor of more ‘natural’ and sustainably sourced substitutes. Pet owners believe that natural alternatives are healthier and offer longevity to their pets. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate and compare the antifungal efficacy of two natural products, fermented whey protein (EverWild; EV) and citrus extract essential oil, when challenged againstAspergillus flavusinoculated in semi-moist pet treats. This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of vegetable protein sources on growth and economic performance of nursery pigs in a commercial research environment. The objective of this study was to estimate the SID Lys requirement for growth and feed efficiency of 170- to 220-lb finishing pigs. A total of 616 barrows and gilts (600 × 241, DNA; initially 168.3 ± 2.7 lb BW) were used in two separate studies each lasting 21 d. A total of 1,789 pigs (337 × 1050, PIC; initial BW 240.0 ± 2.51 lb) were used to determine the effects of increasing L-Lys-HCl and AA ratios on performance of late finishing pigs fed diets without DDGS. The study used 2 groups of pigs and each study lasted 18 and 27 d, respectively. A total of 1,793 pigs (L337 × 1050, PIC, Hendersonville, TN; initially 231.2 ± 2.4 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of increasing soybean meal in corn-based diets on growth performance of late finishing pigs. Soy-based products are known to pose a viable risk to US swine herds because of their ability to harbor and transmit virus. This study evaluated soy imports into the US as a whole and from foreign animal disease positive (FAD+) countries to determine which products are being imported in the highest quantities and observe potential trends in imports from FAD+ countries. Previous research has demonstrated the benefits of including large grain particle size in poultry diets on gizzard and gastrointestinal tract development. However, including these larger particles may decrease pellet integrity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of coarse corn inclusion level on pellet quality. A corn soybean meal-based finisher broiler diet with 1.5% mixer added fat was used in this experiment. The objectives of this experiment were: 1) to determine the effects of sucrose and lactose-based liquid ingredient inclusion on the pelleting efficiency and quality of a high-fiber diet; and 2) to evaluate the role of mash conditioning temperature on the binding effectiveness of the tested liquid ingredients. As the United States maintains trade with countries where African swine fever virus (ASFV) is endemic, it is critical to have methods that can detect and mitigate the risk of ASFV in potentially contaminated feed or ingredients. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to 1) evaluate feed batch sequencing as a mitigation technique for ASFV contamination in a feed mill, and 2) determine if a feed sampling method could identify ASFV following experimental inoculation. Antimicrobial interventions currently being applied to control foodborne pathogens in raw meat-based diets (RMBDs) for dogs are rare and costly, and yet their demand keeps rising. The objective of this study was to determine the antimicrobial efficacy of encapsulated lactic acid challenged againstSalmonella entericainoculated in model RMBD. Nutritionally complete model RMBDs were prepared with three levels of encapsulated lactic acid (1.0%, 2.0%, and 3.0%) and formed into approximately 100 g patties. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) in mash and crumbled pellet broiler diets. A total of 400 male chicks (Cobb 500; initial BW 0.092 lb) were housed in 4 Petersime batteries and used in an 18-d study. Mechanically extracted or expelled soybean meal (MSBM) typically has increased concentrations of fat and decreased concentrations of essential AA compared to SSBM, but MSBM has been demonstrated to have improved AA digestibility.
