Twinning Increases Production, K P. Croker Jan 1966

Twinning Increases Production, K P. Croker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Many breeders claim that twinning causes too many losses among Merino lambs and does not favour breeding for twin lamb production.

But recent experiments have proved otherwise and agricultural scientists now agree that . . .

TWINNING INCREASES PRODUCTION

THE low marking percentages regularly recorded for Merino flocks suggest that the Merino is a relatively infertile breed.

Certainly, lambing percentages are low when compared with those of most British breeds of sheep.

Review Of Silvicultural Research: White Spruce And Trembling Aspen Cover Types, Mixedwood Forest Section, Boreal Forest Region, Alberta-Saskatchewan-Manitoba, J. M. Jarvis, G. A. Steneker, R. M. Waldron, J. C. Lees

Aspen Bibliography

The Department of Forestry has been carrying on silvicultural research in the white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) cover types in the Mixedwood Forest Section of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba for about 40 years. Because of the needs of industry most of this research has been focused on spruce, and only as small portion on aspen. Much of the research is concerned with basic problems and the findings in one area may be applied directly or with minor modification throughout the entire Mixedwood Forest Section. Only a minor part of the total …

Cacodylic Acid As A Silvicide, Maurice W. Day Feb 1965

Cacodylic Acid As A Silvicide, Maurice W. Day

Aspen Bibliography

This report deals with the effectiveness of cacodylic acid (dimethylarsenic acid) as a silvicide for undesirable trees. Cacodylic acid has been used successfully as an herbicide for the destruction of grasses and weeds. Experimental work with this material was begun during the 1963 field season, and continued during 1964, to permit complete evaluation of the results. It appears that cacodylic acid has considerable potential as a silvicide.

How To Identify Twin-Born Lambs, G T. Halpin, P. Nelson Jan 1965

How To Identify Twin-Born Lambs, G T. Halpin, P. Nelson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IN the past few years it has become widely accepted that the ability to produce twin or multiple lambs is a heritable characteristic.

This means that breeding from sheep born as twins should give more multiple births and higher lambing percentages than breeding from sheep born as single lambs.

Estimates Of Heritability Of Beef Cattle Performance Traits By Regression Of Offspring On Sire, C. J. Brown, Maximo Gacula May 1964

Estimates Of Heritability Of Beef Cattle Performance Traits By Regression Of Offspring On Sire, C. J. Brown, Maximo Gacula

Genetics Collection

Data used in this study were taken from performance test records of Hereford, Aberdeen-Angus and Shorthorn sires and their progeny that were raised and performance tested at the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station during the years 1951 through 1962. Heritability estimates based on regression of offspring on sire were obtained from 201 male progeny belonging to 20 sire groups. The estimates obtained were 0.19±0.19 for 120-day weight, 0.27±0.13 for initial test weight, 0.93±0.18 for test daily gain, 0.43± 0.18 for feed consumption, 0.41±0.25 for feed conversion, 0.15±0.15 for type score, 0.37± 0.14 for final test weight, and 0.79±0.18 for production index.

The Role Of Fleece Measurement In Selecting Merino Sheep, H G. Neil, R. J. Lightfoot Jan 1964

The Role Of Fleece Measurement In Selecting Merino Sheep, H G. Neil, R. J. Lightfoot

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY things determine how much wool a sheep can grow.

These include the amount and quality of pasture available or how the sheep are fed, the stocking rate, the general health and thrift of the sheep and other management considerations such as cropping and the time of lambing.

The Importance Of Milk Production In Beef Cattle, W J O Wilkie Jan 1964

The Importance Of Milk Production In Beef Cattle, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IN recent years there has been a great deal of comment on the need for "dairy blood" in the State's beef industry.

There seems to have been some confused thinking on this matter. There is no doubt at all that a beef dam should be able to produce enough milk to do its calf well.

But there is nothing to gain and a great deal to lose if too much emphasis is placed on milking qualities without reference to beef qualities.

FIRST THREE-YEAR-AVERAGE REPORT FOR THE WEST AUSTRALIAN RANDOM SAMPLE LAYING TEST COVERING THE 4th, 5th AND 6th TESTS

Despite every effort made to provide all entries in individual tests with a uniform environment it is still possible for a particular entry's performance not to be a true indication of its inherent ability.

Random Sample Test results should therefore be viewed on a long term, annual, consecutive basis. If the yearly results for a given hatchery are grouped together and averaged over a period of several years irregularities in performance due to factors other than genetic worth are minimised and a …

The Secret Of Viral Reproduction, George W. Cochran May 1963

The Secret Of Viral Reproduction, George W. Cochran

Faculty Honor Lectures

Nucleic acid is the basis of life. There are 2 types, ribose nucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA). DNA, the material found in the chromosomes within the nuclei of the cells of most living organisms, bears the genetic code that determines all of the characteristics of a living organism. Information from the DNA of the chromosomes is carried to all parts of the cell by one type of RNA called messenger RNA. Additional specialized RNA molecules are found inside the ribosomes, tiny bodies within the protoplasm that make proteins for the cell. Still other, smaller RNA molecules, called …
