Where Should Buffers Go? Modeling Riparian Habitat Connectivity In Northeast Kansas, Gary Bentrup, Todd Kellerman Sep 2004

Where Should Buffers Go? Modeling Riparian Habitat Connectivity In Northeast Kansas, Gary Bentrup, Todd Kellerman

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

Through many funding programs, riparian buffers are being created on agricultural lands to address significant water quality problems. Society and landowners are demanding many other environmental and social services (e.g., wildlife habitat and income diversification) from this practice. Resource planners therefore need to design riparian buffer systems in the right places to provide multiple services. However, scientific guidance for this is lacking. We developed a geographic information system (GIS)-based assessment method for quickly identifying where buffers can be established to restore connectivity of riparian areas for the benefit of terrestrial wildlife. An area in northeastern Kansas was selected to evaluate …

Historical Evidence Of Riparian Forests In The Great Plains And How That Knowledge Can Aid With Restoration And Management., Elliot West, Greg Ruark

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

While some argue that the Great Plains were dominated by grasslands and that riparian woodlands were rare, others contend that trees would logically have occurred in riparian areas due to favorable microenvironment conditions. Historically, what native plant communities were found in riparian zones of the Great Plains? The answers to this question depend to a large extent on what time period is used as a reference of pre-settlement conditions.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1981) drew upon conditions in 1905 for insight and concluded that trees were “wholly absent” or consisted of scattered cottonwood and willow. However, such a …

Working Trees For The 2002 Farm Bill Aug 2004

Working Trees For The 2002 Farm Bill

Working Trees (USDA-NAC)

The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (Farm Bill) has been hailed as the single most significant commitment toward conservation on private lands in the Nation's history. Landowners can benefit from a portfolio of voluntary services. The conservation provisions can assist farmers and ranchers in meeting environmental and production challenges on their land. This legislation modifies existing programs and creates some new programs. The 2002 Farm Bill provides many opportunitiesy to enhance the long-term quality of our environment and the conservation of our natural resources.

Agroforestry has come a long way in the United States in the last …

Restoration Of Aspen Woodland Invaded By Western Juniper: Applications Of Partial Cutting And Prescribed Fire, Jonathon D. Bates, Richard F. Miller

Aspen Bibliography

Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis spp. occidentalis) woodlands are rapidly replacing quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) stands throughout the northern Great Basin. Aspen stands provide important habitat for many wildlife species and contain a high diversity of understory shrubs and herbaceous species. We studies two juniper removal treatments to restore aspen woodlands in Kiger Canyon on Steens Mountain, Oregon.

Maximizing Northern Red Oak (Quercus Rubra) Seedling Growth To Sustain Oak-Dominated Ecosystems In East Tennessee, Brian Andrwe Barwatt Aug 2004

Maximizing Northern Red Oak (Quercus Rubra) Seedling Growth To Sustain Oak-Dominated Ecosystems In East Tennessee, Brian Andrwe Barwatt

Masters Theses

The success of northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) in the oak-hickory forest type and its growth and development into the overstory is of great concern due to the value of this species as a source of forest products and mast for wildlife. There is a general consensus that rapid oak seedling height growth occurs above certain threshold levels of light, soil moisture, and nutrients. If these specific levels and the relative importance of competition between northern red oak (NRO) seedlings and other individual plant species can be determined, then the implementation of more precise management practices that promote …

A Survey Of Visitors To Mt. Leconte In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Amy Lynn Mathis

Masters Theses

This study focuses on the behaviors, attitudes, perceptions and preferences of visitors to Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Mt. LeConte (elevation 6,593 ft.) is a popular tourist destination year-round. In addition to the trails that access the summit, there is a backcountry shelter and a rustic lodge, built in 1926, for overnight guests. The upcoming expiration of the Concession Contract for Mt. LeConte Lodge makes it necessary to conduct an Environmental Assessment. This project serves the dual objectives of providing data needed for the Environmental Assessment (EA) and meeting the General Management Plan requirement to monitor …

Establishment Of Upland And Bottomland Hardwood Agroforestry Plantations In Tennessee And Mississippi, David Michael Casey Aug 2004

Establishment Of Upland And Bottomland Hardwood Agroforestry Plantations In Tennessee And Mississippi, David Michael Casey

Masters Theses

The feasibility of alley cropping as a means of afforestation was studied across seven different study sites in western Tennessee and northern Mississippi. Seeds were collected from 11 oak (Quercus spp) species and black walnut (Jug/ans nigra L.) trees in the region and grown under nursery protocols that are designed to produce seedlings of optimal size in one year. Seedlings were lifted by genetic family after one year and initial seedling measurements were recorded. Four bottomland studies and three upland studies were then sorted into an incomplete block design with multiple species and families within each block. …

Green-Ampt Infiltration Parameters In Riparian Buffers, L. M. Stahr, Dean E. Eisenhauer, M. J. Helmers, Mike Dosskey, Thomas G. Franti Aug 2004

Green-Ampt Infiltration Parameters In Riparian Buffers, L. M. Stahr, Dean E. Eisenhauer, M. J. Helmers, Mike Dosskey, Thomas G. Franti

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

Riparian buffers can improve surface water quality by filtering contaminants from runoff before they enter streams. Infiltration is an important process in riparian buffers. Computer models are often used to assess the performance of riparian buffers. Accurate prediction of infiltration by these models is dependent upon accurate estimates of infiltration parameters. Of particular interest here are Green-Ampt infiltration parameters, satiated hydraulic conductivity (Ko) and wetting front suction (hf). The objectives of this research were to (i) modify the Smith sorptivity procedure so that it can be used to estimate Green-Ampt infiltration parameters, (ii) Determine the relative …

Assessment Of Bat Mortality And Activity At Buffalo Mountain Windfarm, Eastern Tennessee, Jenny K. Fiedler Aug 2004

Assessment Of Bat Mortality And Activity At Buffalo Mountain Windfarm, Eastern Tennessee, Jenny K. Fiedler

Masters Theses

Wind power has grown rapidly as an alternative energy source over the last decade. Although overall environmental impacts are relatively low, impacts to bats have yet to be fully assessed. Recent studies at other windfarms suggest regional variation in mortality rates and species affected. This study took place at Tennessee Valley Authority’s Buffalo Mountain Windfarm (BMW) in eastern Tennessee, currently the only commercial windfarm in the southeastern United States. Study objectives were to establish patterns of bat mortality and activity at BMW, and determine if and how they were related.

Mortality monitoring consisted of regular carcass searches conducted since BMW …

Prescribed Burning In Tennessee: Importance And Barriers, Goals, And Information Needs Of Private, State, And Federal Managers, Brian T. Hemel Aug 2004

Prescribed Burning In Tennessee: Importance And Barriers, Goals, And Information Needs Of Private, State, And Federal Managers, Brian T. Hemel

Masters Theses

Early in the 20th century, intense and severe wildfires were frequent due to abundant fuels generated by logging and the presence of anthropogenic ignition sources in close proximity to these fuels. As timber was depleted, this period of lumbering ceased and the realization that vast tracts of cutover land had to be reforested and protected led to the inception of fire suppression organizations and techniques. The fire exclusion that occurred over much of the 20th century due to organized fire suppression efforts has led to two sets of problems: the buildup of fuels and the decline of fire-adapted …

Simulating The Dynamics Of Linear Forests In Great Plains Agroecosystems Under Changing Climates, Qinfeng Guo, James R. Brandle, Michele M. Schoeneberger, D. Buettner Jul 2004

Simulating The Dynamics Of Linear Forests In Great Plains Agroecosystems Under Changing Climates, Qinfeng Guo, James R. Brandle, Michele M. Schoeneberger, D. Buettner

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

Most forest growth models are not suitable for the highly fragmented, linear (or linearly shaped) forests in the Great Plains agroecosystems (e.g., windbreaks, riparian forest buffers), where such forests are a minor but ecologically important component of the land mosaics. This study used SEEDSCAPE, a recently modified gap model designed for cultivated land mosaics in the Great Plains, to simulate the effects of climate change on the dynamics of such linear forests. We simulated the dynamics of windbreaks with different initial planting species richness and widths flight changes as the selected resulting factor) using current climate data and nested regional …

Fire Regimes And Resultant Forest Structure In Native Año Nuevo Monterey Pine (Pinus Radiata) Forest, California, Scott L. Stephens, Douglas D. Piirto, Domenico F. Caramagno

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Native Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) forests occur in five populations on the west coast of North America. High severity fire has been reported to be the main disturbance agent that initiates seedling establishment for this species. To investigate the impacts of fire in this ecosystem, age structure and fire history data were collected from the native Ano Nuevo Monterey pine forest near Santa Cruz California. Stump cross-sections were removed from 10 randomly placed openings, and each was dated to determine tree age and fire history. Average mean fire return intervals were 11.2-20.1 y. Fifty-one percent of the Monterey …

Pb1650 Understanding Log Scales And Log Rules, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service Jun 2004

Pb1650 Understanding Log Scales And Log Rules, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service

Forestry, Trees, and Timber

A necessary step in determining the value of timber at the mill is establishing the estimated volume by standard scaling practices. Examples of scaling practices include measuring the weight of pulpwood to estimate the volume and measuring the dimensions of hardwood sawlogs, along with applying a log rule to determine how much lumber can be sawn from the log. This publication describes common methods of log scaling and log rules used in Tennessee.

Scaling estimates the log volume on a board foot, cubic foot, linear foot or cord basis. In scaling pulpwood or chipwood, the volume of available material is …
