Classification Of Turkish Plantago L. Species Using Numerical Taxonomy, Betül Tutel, İrfan Kandemi̇r, Semra Kuş, Aykut Kence

Turkish Journal of Botany

Twenty-three Plantago L. taxa belonging to 2 subgenera (Euplantago Harms and Psyllium (Juss.) Harms) were classified by numerical taxonomic methods. A total of 36 morphological and ecological characters were utilised for numerical taxonomic analysis of Plantago taxa. The classification obtained by numeric taxonomic methods was compared to that obtained by conventional methods. In general, both of the classifications agreed well, except for the section Hymenopsyllium Pilger being clustered under the subgenus Psyllium contrary to the conventional classification.

In Vitro Regeneration Of Sandal (Santalum Album L.) From Leaves, Abdul Mujib Jan 2005

In Vitro Regeneration Of Sandal (Santalum Album L.) From Leaves, Abdul Mujib

Turkish Journal of Botany

The first successful induction of adventitious shoot buds on Santalum album L. leaves is reported. De novo shoots were induced directly on leaves without any callusing stage. A leaf length of 0.5-1.5 cm only showed bud inducing potential. Bud formation occurred on both MS and WPM basal media, although, liquid media were more responsive. Among the plant growth regulators, BAP at low concentrations (0.44 and 2.22 µM) was effective in this organogenetic process but exogenous auxin application failed to illicit a similar morphogenetic response. Epiphyllous shoot formation was more pronounced on leaf lamina in which the dorsal and ventral leaf …

Turkish Journal of Botany

The photoinhibition of photosystem II in vivo by analysis of diverse components -initial rate, steady state rate and lag phase-of photosynthetic O_2 evolution curves on greening wheat seedlings after illumination by excess white light (320 W/m^2) was investigated. A sharp reduction in the initial and steady state rates and a simultaneous intense rise in the lag phase of O_2 evolution were observed under the illumination of seedlings by excess light on the lag phase of chlorophyll a biosynthesis (less than 6 h of seedling greening) in comparison with the illumination of seedlings by excess light at the stage of substantial …

Purification And Partial Characterisation Of An Acid Lipase In Germinating Lipidbody Linseedlings, Reda Helmy Ahmed Sammour Jan 2005

Purification And Partial Characterisation Of An Acid Lipase In Germinating Lipidbody Linseedlings, Reda Helmy Ahmed Sammour

Turkish Journal of Botany

Electrophoretic analysis of germinating linseed proteins showed a gradual decrease in the quantity of a protein with a molecular weight of 42 kDa. This protein accumulates after 36 h of germination in synchronisation with an increase in lipase activity, and a decrease in the quantity of the total lipids. The 42 kDa subunit was found to be a lipid body membrane protein. This protein was isolated and identified by immunoprecipitation as a subunit of lipase. The linseed lipase acted on a wide range of triacylglycerols and had optimal activity at pH 4.7. The activity of the enzyme was slightly affected …

According to the number of taxa, Asteraceae, Fabaceae and Poaceae are the largest families (137 Asteraceae, 116 Fabaceae, …

In Vitro Mass Propagation Of Cucumis Sativus L. From Nodal Segments, Naseem Ahmad, Mohammad Anis Jan 2005

In Vitro Mass Propagation Of Cucumis Sativus L. From Nodal Segments, Naseem Ahmad, Mohammad Anis

Turkish Journal of Botany

An efficient reproducible protocol for the in vitro multiplication of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), an important vegetable crop, was developed from nodal explants. Addition of casein hydrolysate to the shoot induction medium (MS + BA) significantly enhanced the number of multiple shoots or growth of the regenerants. Optimum shoot regeneration was observed on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1.0 µM 6-benzyladenine (BA) and (200 mg/l) casein hydrolysate. Rooting of isolated in vitro raised microshoots was readily achieved with (1.0 µM) \alpha-naphthalene-acetic acid (NAA) in 1/2 MS. The plantlets thus obtained were successfully established in a greenhouse.

Evaluation Of Diagnostic Reproductive And Vegetative Characters Among Tetraploid Triticum L. Species (Poaceae; Triticeae) In Iran, Navaz Kharazian, Mohammad Reza Rahiminejad Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Diagnostic Reproductive And Vegetative Characters Among Tetraploid Triticum L. Species (Poaceae; Triticeae) In Iran, Navaz Kharazian, Mohammad Reza Rahiminejad

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study concerns the evaluation of 19 vegetative and reproductive characters (7 qualitative and 12 quantitative) among 45 accessions belonging to wild and cultivated tetraploid Triticum L. species: T. turgidum L., T. durum Desf., T. dicoccum (Schrank) Schrebler and T. dicoccoides (Koern. ex Aschers. et Graebn.) Aaronsohn, occurring in Iran. The results of this study show that T. turgidum is a distinct species from T. durum, and T. dicoccum showed high similarity to T. dicoccoides. The strong relationship between the latter pair of species may result from a high degree of gene flow between them. The diagnostic characters between T. …

Giemsa C-Banded Karyotypes Of Vicia Cracca L. Subsp. Cracca And V. Bithynica L., Hüseyi̇n İnceer, Sema Hayirlioğlu Ayaz

Turkish Journal of Botany

The distribution of heterochromatin on the chromosomes of V. cracca L. subsp. cracca (2n = 14) and V. bithynica L. (2n = 14) was established with the aid of the C-banding technique. The chromosomes of both species have centromeric C-bands. When compared, prominent bands at the ends of the short arms on 4 chromosomes of V. cracca subsp. cracca were observed, while in V. bithynica only 1 chromosome had a prominent band at the end of the long arm. The C-banding patterns in the 2 species were different, and it was determined that heterochromatic regions were more dense on the …
