In Vitro Effects Of Prolactin, Cortisol, Aldosterone, And Cyclic Amp On Branchial Na+, K+ - Activated Atpase Of The Killifish, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Stephen Burke Kerby

Master's Theses

In vitro effects of prolactin, cortisol, aldosterone, and cyclic adenosine monophosphate were studied on branchial Na+, K+ - activated ATPase of freshwater adapted killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus. Decreases in ATPase activity were found after treatment with prolactin and aldosterone. Cyclic AMP caused an increase in ATPase activity. The action of cortisol on this enzyme was not clear.A dose - response relationship was found only for cyclic AMP .It is proposed that cyclic AMP may be involved in the adaptation of F. heteroclitus to seawater.

A Comparative Study Of Fish Populations In The Vicinity Of A Thermal Discharge In The James River, Virginia, Judson Wayne White

Master's Theses

The size, species composition and structure of fish populations in a six mi stretch of the James River in the Piedmont Province of Virginia were analyzed. Twenty collections were made by electrofishing from October 1972 through September 1973 from both the north side of the river, which received a thermal discharge from a power station, and the south side where temperatures were ambient. Parameters investigated were number of species, total number of individuals and the Shannon-Wiener and evenness indices of species diversity. Significant differences in seasonal patterns were found between the communities in the thermal discharge and those on the …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, aspects of the behavior and ecology of two sympathetic intertidal hermit crabs, Pagurus hirsutiusculus and Pagurus samuelis were studied with the intention of expanding the use of fitness set analysis to other species, particularly extending studies over the entire breeding season.

An Investigation Of Infection Mechanisms Of Arceuthobium Campylopodum, Annabella Jaramillo Garcia Jan 1974

An Investigation Of Infection Mechanisms Of Arceuthobium Campylopodum, Annabella Jaramillo Garcia

Dissertations and Theses

Wound periderm is formed by Juniperus occidentalis and Calocedrus decurrens in resistance to infection by the dwarf mistletoe Arceuthobium campylopodum. The pattern of wound periderm formation suggests that chemical as well as mechanical factors are involved. The concentration of hydrolases in the radicular apex of the parasite suggests that they may facilitate the penetration process by which dwarf mistletoes infect their hosts. Emzymatic assistance may also provide a partial explanation for the specificity with which dwarf mistletoes are adapted to given hosts. These resistance responses by the the non-host species were compared with the normal infection process Pinus ponderosa.

Physiological And Behavior Studies Of Thelepus Crispus And Its Commensal Halosydna Brevisetosa, John B. Morgan Jan 1974

Physiological And Behavior Studies Of Thelepus Crispus And Its Commensal Halosydna Brevisetosa, John B. Morgan

Dissertations and Theses

Chemical, physical and physiological interactions between the marine commensal scaleworm Halosydna brevisetosa Kinberg and its terebellid host, Thelepus crispus Johnson were investigated. In an experiment designed to test for chemical attraction between the host and commensal, Halosydna were unable to identify the arm in a U-tube choice apparatus leading to the host. In 50 trials, 54% of the commensals crawled into the flow of water from their hosts. Other observations showed that Halosydna made contact with the host by random encounter. After contact, commensals followed tentacles down into the host’s tube and took up a characteristic position along the dorsum …

The Effect Of Applied Nitrogen And Subterranean Clover On The Growth Of Doublegee, D J. Gilbey Jan 1974

The Effect Of Applied Nitrogen And Subterranean Clover On The Growth Of Doublegee, D J. Gilbey

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Until 20 years ago doublegees in Western Australia were mainly confined to the red-brown earth soils of the wheatbelt.

Since then, they have spread to light loamy sand soils in the wheatbelt, many of which have carried subterranean clover from the mid-1940s onwards.

It has been widely presumed that the spread of doublegees on to the lighter sandy soils of W.A. can be associated with the establishment of subterranean clover on these soils.

This report summarises the results of a glasshouse experiment on the effect of clover and nitrogen on the growth of doublegee.

Grazing And Control Of Coral Reef Community Structure By Diadema Antillarum Philippi (Echinodermata: Echinoidea): A Preliminary Study, P. Sammarco, J. S. Levinton, John C. Ogden Jan 1974

Grazing And Control Of Coral Reef Community Structure By Diadema Antillarum Philippi (Echinodermata: Echinoidea): A Preliminary Study, P. Sammarco, J. S. Levinton, John C. Ogden

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

The grazing activities of the tropical echinoid Diadema antillarum Philippi can markedly influence the structure of the shallow-water epibenthic coral reef community. The elimination of an entire Diadema population from a patch reef in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands resulted in a great increase in macro-algal biomass, alterations in species composition, shifts in dominance, an increase in species numbers, and a decrease in equitability. The increase noted in number of species may be indicative of either initial pre-competitive phases of succession or the creation of a new habitat- the micro-canopy. Experiments involving the caging of Diadema have shown that the …

Flowering Plants Of Omega Mine, Table Mountain, Tuolumne County, California, Mary Wilcox Jan 1974

Flowering Plants Of Omega Mine, Table Mountain, Tuolumne County, California, Mary Wilcox

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The flora of California has been studied as a whole, but with the exception of Yosemite Valley few specific areas in Tuolumne County have been investigated.

The area chosen for this investigation was approximately forty acres of the lava flow known as Table Mountain. This forty acres is located in the southeast portion of the Omega Mine near Rawhide Flat, Tuolumne County, California. The decision to use this area for study was based on its relative freedom from man's influence and its accessibility. The Omega Vine belongs to the author and its use was restricted during the period of investigation

Population Ecology Of The Littoral Fringe Gastropod Littorina Planaxis In Northern California, Russell James Schmitt Jan 1974

Population Ecology Of The Littoral Fringe Gastropod Littorina Planaxis In Northern California, Russell James Schmitt

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Life history patterns of individual organisms are the result of natural selection and should be correlated with particular physical and biological characteristics of habitats in which they live. The littoral fringe is known to be the most severe physical habitat in the intertidal zone, and it is expected that organisms in it should have population characteristics associated with selective response to physical adversity rather than biological interaction. Ecological studies of populations of Littorina planaxis were made in the Dillon Beach and Bodega Head areas. The study localities differed principally in extent of wave exposure rather than geographical location.

Parasites Of Fishes From The San Joaquin Delta, Gary Herndon Hensley Jan 1974

Parasites Of Fishes From The San Joaquin Delta, Gary Herndon Hensley

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to extend previous parasitological investigations of the San Joaquin area fishes. This study did not deal with a specific group of fish or parasite, but rather all groups of fishes and parasites encountered. As the amount of work done in California has not been extensive, more research will contribute to our understanding of these fishes and their parasites.

A Quantitative Study Of The Water Quality And Plankton Of Upper Blue Lake, Lower Blue Lake, And The Oaks Arm Of Clear Lake In Lake County, California, Stephen Patrick Hayes Jan 1974

A Quantitative Study Of The Water Quality And Plankton Of Upper Blue Lake, Lower Blue Lake, And The Oaks Arm Of Clear Lake In Lake County, California, Stephen Patrick Hayes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken to examine any possible associations between the measurements of water quality and lake conditions, and the quantity and composition of plankton present in Upper Blue Lake, Lower Blue Lake, and the Oaks Arm of Clear Lake during the sampling period. A secondary objective of this study was to provide a record of these measurements. These measurements, when taken collectively, are important indicators of the trophic state or nutrient condition of the waters of the three lakes from February through October 1972.
