Review Of Helminths Of Fish-Eating Birds Of The Palaearctic Region. I. Nematoda, Glenn L. Hoffman Jan 1978

Review Of Helminths Of Fish-Eating Birds Of The Palaearctic Region. I. Nematoda, Glenn L. Hoffman

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

The title is accurate but the subject is a little misleading. One would expect that the fish-eating birds will acquire nematodes from the fish they eat. On the contrary, with one exception, Eustrongylides tubifex, as far as is known none of these nematodes use fish as normal intermediate hosts. A few species use fish as paratenic hosts. The book consists of an Introduction (2 pages), General Account of Nematodes (4 pages), the Systematic Part (233 pages), List of Fish-Eating Birds and Their Nematodes (22 pages), References (29 pages) and Index (13 pages). There are keys to families, genera, and …

Avian Mortality Caused By A September Wind And Hail Storm, Kenneth F. Higgins, Michael A. Johnson Jan 1978

Avian Mortality Caused By A September Wind And Hail Storm, Kenneth F. Higgins, Michael A. Johnson

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

In recent study of nonhunting mortality of wild waterfowl, Stout and Cornwell (1976) identified weather as one of the more significant causal agents. This paper describes an occurrence of spectacular avian mortality caused by a severe thunderstorm in North Dakota on 8 September 1977.

The storm was associated with a low pressure system in South Dakota. It developed about Noon CST north of Dickinson, traveled eastward and generally north of highway 1-94, and continued into Minnesota at about 5:00 p.m. CST. The system moved at about 60 mph (97 km/h) over a 300 mile (483 km) stretch of the state; …

Mycobacteriosis (Tuberculosis) Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko Jan 1978

Mycobacteriosis (Tuberculosis) Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Mycobacteria are widely distributed in nature. They are abundant in the soil, on the surface of plants, on the skin of vertebrates, in human food (e.g., milk and butter), and in animal feeds. Most mycobacteria are saprophytic, but some species are highly pathogenic and cause diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy in humans, and similar diseases in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes.

Mycobacteria that cause diseases of fishes differ considerably from those that cause diseases in humans and other mammals. Therefore, to avoid association between tuberculosis in mammals and mycobacterial infections in fishes, it is better to call the …

Loss Of Larval Fish By Epilimnial Discharge From Degray Lake, Arkansas, Thomas E. Moen, Michael R. Dewey Jan 1978

Loss Of Larval Fish By Epilimnial Discharge From Degray Lake, Arkansas, Thomas E. Moen, Michael R. Dewey

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Weekly samples of larval fish were collected from water discharged from the epilimnion of DeGray Lake into the tailwaters, for power generation, from April through August, 1976 and 1977. Peak rates of loss measured were 1.4 larvae/m³ in May, 1976 and 2.7/m³ in April, 1977. Sunfish, shad and crappie made up 97% of an estimated 83.3 million fish lost in 1976, and 98% of 122.4 million lost in 1977. The most critical period for larval fish loss extended from the last week of April to the first week of June. No definite relationships were noted between length of the power …

Effects Of Cornstarch And Dextrose On Oysters, Kenneth W. Turgeon, Dexter S. Haven Jan 1978

Effects Of Cornstarch And Dextrose On Oysters, Kenneth W. Turgeon, Dexter S. Haven

VIMS Articles

The growth and fattening of the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791), has long been of interest to oyster biologists since the market value of oysters is directly related to the quantity and quality of "meat" obtained per bushel ( = 35.2 L) of harvested oysters. Much of the early work done on the growth and fattening of oysters attempted to demonstrate the superior nutritional value of specific planktonic organisms and detritus (MOORE & POPE, 1910; MARTIN, 1923, 1927a, 1927b, 1928; GAVARD, 1927; NELSON, 1947). MITCHELL ( I917) was the first to study the effects of carbohydrates of known composition …

The Amateur Marron Fishery In Western Australia, N. M. Morrissy Jan 1978

The Amateur Marron Fishery In Western Australia, N. M. Morrissy

Fisheries research bulletins

The amateur fishery in south-western Australia for marron, Cherax tenuimanus, the third largest Australian and world freshwater crayfish, is described, including the history of management regulations and the legal methods of capture of marron (scoop nets, drop nets and snares) in rivers and dams. Catch and effort data were obtained from research log books over the period 1971 to 1976. From the inception of the Inland Fisherman's License, largely intended for marron, in 1970, the number of licenses rose steeply from 6,500 to 20,000 by 1975. The calculated total annual catch by the 1974-75 and 1975-76 seasons was about 470,000 …

Movement Of 1970 Year Class Striped Bass Between Virginia, New York And New England, William H. Kriete Jr., John V. Merriner, Herbert M. Austin Jan 1978

Movement Of 1970 Year Class Striped Bass Between Virginia, New York And New England, William H. Kriete Jr., John V. Merriner, Herbert M. Austin

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Striped bass (Marone saxatilis) were tagged in Virginia beginning in 1968. The 1970 yearclass of striped bass was tagged both in Virginia and New York in 1972. Fish tagged in Virginia were returned from New York to Maine while fish tagged in New York were returned from the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. These data indicated that fish migrate from rivers in which they were spawned at different ages and that fish that migrate as 2 year olds remain together as a group until they are 3+ years. Therefore, within the Chesapeake Bay area there …

Growth And Survival Of Striped Bass And Striped Bass X White Perch Hybrids, J. Howard Kerby, Edwin B. Joseph Jan 1978

Growth And Survival Of Striped Bass And Striped Bass X White Perch Hybrids, J. Howard Kerby, Edwin B. Joseph

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Experiments comparing growth and survival of striped bass (Morvne saxatilis) and striped bass female X white perch (M. americana) male hybrids indicated the hybrids were hardier than striped bass under the same experimental conditions. Striped bass exhibited health problems and resulting mortality which were not evident in the hybrids. Overall survival of striped bass in 2 replicate experiments was 42.5% after II months. whereas that of the hybrids was 84.2%. Striped bass and hybrid growth patterns were similar, but striped bass grew somewhat more rapidly than the latter. Mean specific (instantaneous) growth rates were roughly similar throughout the study. with …

A Survey Of The Shellfish Resources Adjacent To Croaker Landing In The York River, Virginia, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

From 7 March 1978 through 14 March 1978, an area of the bottom in the York River around Croaker Landing was studied to define the existing shellfish resource. The study was conducted at the request of the Division of Parks of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Economic Development in conjunction with the construction of the York River State Park. Comparison of this study with a post-dredging assessment will provide a measure of the possible impact of dredging activities on the surrounding bottom.

Pasteurellosis Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock Jan 1978

Pasteurellosis Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Septicemic infections of marine and estuarine fishes caused by Pasteurella have been known since the early 1960's. A Pasteurella caused a massive mortality of white perch (Morone americanus) and striped bass (M. saxatilis) in Chesapeake Bay in 1963 (Snieszko et al. 1964), and of cage-cultured yellowtails (Seriola quinqueradiata) in Japan in 1964 (Matsusato 1975). Pasteurellosis has spread to most areas in Japan where yellowtails are propagated and is one of the important bacterial diseases of the species. In 1972, 360 metric tons of yellowtails were lost. The terms bacterial tuberculoidosis and pseudotuberculosis (Kubota et …

First Nesting Record Of The Caspian Tern In North Dakota, James F. Herman, Rodney A. Schmidt, Karen J. Wilson Jan 1978

First Nesting Record Of The Caspian Tern In North Dakota, James F. Herman, Rodney A. Schmidt, Karen J. Wilson

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

On June 28, 1977, we observed a single pair of Caspian terns (Sterna caspia) with two young on an island in Lake Williams in central North Dakota. This is the first confirmation of actual nesting by the Caspian tern in the State. Previously, breeding records had been postulated from sightings during the breeding season (Kantrud 1973; Robert Randall, personal communication; and Rohrt Stewart, personal communication).

Lake Williams is a shallow, saline, 420-hectare lake located near the town of Turtle Lake in east-central Mclean County. Mean depth during the breeding season (May-June) can range from 0 to 50 centimeters. …

Factors Associated With Accuracy In Sampling Fish Eggs And Larvae, R. R. Bowles, J. V. Merriner, G. C. Grant Jan 1978

Factors Associated With Accuracy In Sampling Fish Eggs And Larvae, R. R. Bowles, J. V. Merriner, G. C. Grant

Reports

Ichthyoplankton sampling gear is reviewed and evaluated with emphasis on power plant impact assessment. Effects of biotic and abiotic factors on gear accuracy are discussed. Difficulties associated with obtaining representative samples from patchy population distributions are acknowledged. A listing of commonly used sampling gear has been compiled and indexed by ecosystem. Meter nets and variations of meter nets are the most widely used gear for sampling fish eggs and larvae. Comparative gear evaluation has been performed based on information compiled in the report. Although the diversity of habitats and the great number of relatively important species makes summarization difficult, the …
