Journal of Marine Science and Technology

This feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of replacement of dietary fishmeal (FM) with a mixture of poultry by-product meal (PBM), fish silage (FS) and fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) on the growth performances of the Asian sea bass Lates calcarifer. Five isonitrogenous (46% crude protein) and isolipidic (12% crude lipid) diets were formulated to replace 0 (CON), 25 (FM 25), 50 (FM 50), 75 (FM 75) and 100% (FM 100) of fishmeal protein with the protein mixture (78% PBM, 11% FS, and 11% FPH). One additional diet, namely POM was designed to completely replace FM protein with PBM. …

Composition And Distribution Of Fish Larvae Surrounding The Upwelling Zone In The Waters Of Northeastern Taiwan In Summer, Yi-Chen Wang, Ming-An Lee Oct 2019

Composition And Distribution Of Fish Larvae Surrounding The Upwelling Zone In The Waters Of Northeastern Taiwan In Summer, Yi-Chen Wang, Ming-An Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

We investigated the species composition and distribution of fish larvae surrounding the upwelling zone in the waters of northeastern Taiwan in July 2011. The surface water had higher temperatures (25.7°C-28.3°C) and lower salinity (33.67-34.05 psu) than did lower water columns. A divergent trend was observed between temperature and salinity in the waters above 80 m. Moreover, we identified a cold-core eddy at the upwelling of the Kuroshio subsurface at waters approximately 60 m beneath the surface. In total, 1834 fish larvae were collected from eight stations; 85 taxa contributing to 60 families were identified. The abundance of fish larvae varied …

Cpue Standardization For The Pacific Saury (Cololabis Saira) Fishery In The Northwest Pacific, Wen-Bin Huang, Chih-Hao Hsieh, Tai-Sheng Chiu, Wei-Ting Hsu, Chih-Shin Chen Oct 2019

Cpue Standardization For The Pacific Saury (Cololabis Saira) Fishery In The Northwest Pacific, Wen-Bin Huang, Chih-Hao Hsieh, Tai-Sheng Chiu, Wei-Ting Hsu, Chih-Shin Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

In stock assessment and fisheries management, the standardization of catch per unit effort (CPUE) is critical to derive an effective index of the abundance of exploited fish stocks. In addition to developing various statistical models, a method including the relative fishing power (RFP) of individual vessels has been developed from an intuition concept and applied to bottom trawl fisheries using logbookbased data. This is a convenient and traightforward approach for standardizing the catch-effort data of a fishery. The Pacific saury is a pelagic fish species, and its stock in the Northwest Pacific has been targeted by international fleets since the …

Selected Quality Attributes Of Frozen Farmed Giant Grouper (Epinephelus Lanceolatus) As A Function Of Storage Temperature, Wen-Chieh Sung, Jing-Rong Lin, Tze-Kuei Chiou, Yu-Wei Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The effects of storage temperature (-20°C, -30°C and -55°C) on selected quality-related characteristics of vacuum packed frozen giant grouper fillets (Epinephelus lanceolatus) stored for 6 months were evaluated. The following quality attributes were measured: proximate composition, pH, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value, total volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), ATP related compounds, K value, microbiological analysis, color, texture and sensory evaluation. Formation of TBA was low in the giant grouper fillet, with a value of less than 3.91 mg malondialdehyde (MDA) kg-1, after 6 months storage at -30 and -55°C. No significant differences were found in pH, total plate count (TPC), white index …

Effects Of Dietary Mortierella Alpine Meal Levels On Growth, Body Fatty Acid Composition And Arachidonic Acid Retention For Orange-Spotted Grouper, Epinephelus Coioides, Yu-Hung Lin, Man-Ting Chiu Jun 2019

Effects Of Dietary Mortierella Alpine Meal Levels On Growth, Body Fatty Acid Composition And Arachidonic Acid Retention For Orange-Spotted Grouper, Epinephelus Coioides, Yu-Hung Lin, Man-Ting Chiu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

This study investigated the effect of using Mortierella alpina meal (MAM) as a dietary arachidonic acid (ARA) source on the growth, whole-body fatty acid composition, and ARA retention of the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides). Four diets supplemented with 0% (control), 1%, 2%, and 5% MAM actually contained 0.93%, 1.14%, 1.34%, and 1.93% ARA. Four experimental diets were fed to triplicate groups of fish (initial weight: 7.21 ± 0.21 g) in a recirculating system for 8 weeks. The final body weight, weight gain percentage, specific growth rate, daily feed intake, feed efficiency, and survival of fish did not significantly differ (p …

The Roles Of Cyp19ala And Dmrt1 During Gonadal Sex Differentiation And Sex Change In Orange-Spotted Grouper, Epinephelus Coioides, Chia-Yung Chen, Ya-Ju Tsai, Ching-Fong Chang Jun 2019

The Roles Of Cyp19ala And Dmrt1 During Gonadal Sex Differentiation And Sex Change In Orange-Spotted Grouper, Epinephelus Coioides, Chia-Yung Chen, Ya-Ju Tsai, Ching-Fong Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Sex steroids play a crucial role in gonadal sex differentiation in many nonmammalian vertebrates, including hermaphroditic teleosts. The current study investigates the mRNA expression levels of gonadal cyp19a1a, dmrt1, sf-1, dax-1 and 11β-hsd in the protogynous orange-spotted grouper, Epinephelus coioides, at certain stages during sex differentiation and sex change. Among the genes whose mRNA levels were determined through quantitative RT-PCR analysis, cyp19a1a was predominantly expressed in the ovary, and its expression was much lower in the testis. The level of cyp19a1a expressed at 150 dah was significantly high enough to trigger the pre-gyno female development of protogynous (subadult) orange-spotted grouper. …

Demographic Analyses Of The Data Limited Silky Shark Population In The Indian Ocean Using A Two-Sex Stochastic Matrix Framework, Wen-Pei Tsai, Yen-Jun Wang, Atsuko Yamaguchi Feb 2019

Demographic Analyses Of The Data Limited Silky Shark Population In The Indian Ocean Using A Two-Sex Stochastic Matrix Framework, Wen-Pei Tsai, Yen-Jun Wang, Atsuko Yamaguchi

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The silky shark, Carcharhinus falciformis, is a common bycatch species of tuna and swordfish longline fishing in the Indian Ocean. The high value of its fins makes it one of the most heavily fished shark species in the world. Concern over declining populations and the uncertainty surrounding its population dynamics has increased the urgency of developing appropriate methods to assess its stock status. This study developed a two-sex stage-based structured matrix model with Monte Carlo simulations to examine silky shark demography and population dynamics. The simulations indicate that, without mortality from fishing, the stock will increase slightly (sex combined mean …
