Varietal Response In Alfalfa For Seed Production As Affected By Lygus Infestation And Related Factors, A. Glenn Wahlquist May 1951

Varietal Response In Alfalfa For Seed Production As Affected By Lygus Infestation And Related Factors, A. Glenn Wahlquist

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa is one of the most valuable of our forage crops. A dependable source of seed is therefore a primary essential to the success of our present system of agriculture. More than 70 million pounds of alfalfa seed are required each year in the United States to maintain the present hay and pasture acreage of this crop; and the annual demand for seed would increase to more than 100 million pounds if the acreage were expanded to the extent recommended for soil conservation and a balanced agricultural security.

Study Of Producer Marketing Of Fruits And Vegetables On The Growers' Market In Salt Lake City, Utah, John D. Baker Jr. May 1950

Study Of Producer Marketing Of Fruits And Vegetables On The Growers' Market In Salt Lake City, Utah, John D. Baker Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Growers' Market Company in Salt Lake City was established in its present form in 1919. It developed out of the need of growers and produce dealers and has served an important function in providing a market place where buyers and sellers of fruits and vegetables can be brought together in an orderly fashion to transact business.

During the four months period of this study it was estimated that over 10,000 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables valued at about $960,000 were sold over the market platforms. This represents over 25 per cent of the requirements of fruits and vegetables …

A Comparative Study Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Treating Milk For Cheddar Cheese Making, Mounir Ramzi Nagmoush May 1949

A Comparative Study Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Treating Milk For Cheddar Cheese Making, Mounir Ramzi Nagmoush

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In many countries of the world and in some parts of the United States milk is produced which has a high bacterial contamination. Such milk of undesirable quality is frequently delivered to factories engaged in the manufacture of cheddar cheese. This milk commonly contains large numbers of lactic acid-producing bacteria or other types of microorganisms which cause objectionable flavors and textural defects in the cheese. The improvement of the quality of milk supply under some conditions is a matter of great difficulty so that the manufacture of inferior quality milk into cheese is a problem often encountered.

In the United …

Some Factors Associated With The Economic Feasibility Of Reseeding Privately-Owned Cattle Ranges In Utah, James R. Gray May 1949

Some Factors Associated With The Economic Feasibility Of Reseeding Privately-Owned Cattle Ranges In Utah, James R. Gray

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The forage depletion of western ranges which has occurred during the past century is partly the result of the belief by ranchers that the forage loss was temporary and not serious. Should more forage of a high quality be desired they thought it could be produced by reseeding the ranges. The native western forages, never abundant or luxurious by eastern concepts, nevertheless were of generally high qualities. Limited by low and erratically distributed precipitation, the sparse native forages have in many areas given way to low quality plants. These plants of low quality do not have to withstand the adverse …

The Cost Of Producing Eggs And The Egg Feed Ratio In Utah 1929-'46, Emer E. Broadbent May 1947

The Cost Of Producing Eggs And The Egg Feed Ratio In Utah 1929-'46, Emer E. Broadbent

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Commercial egg production in Utah has developed largely since 1920. Prior to that time most farms had some chickens but the eggs were either used at home or consumed on the local markets. What few commercial poultry farms there were also supplied local markets. It has been estimated that the total egg production in the stat was just about equal to the consumption within the state. Soon after1920 however, egg production on a commercial basis began and thereafter expanded rapidly for a time.

Membership Relations Of The Utah Poultry And Farmers' Cooperative, Glen T. Nelson May 1947

Membership Relations Of The Utah Poultry And Farmers' Cooperative, Glen T. Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Commercial egg production in Utah has developed gradually since 1920. Production of eggs increased from 142 million in 1924 to 433 million eggs in 1946. The percentage of total farm income of the state derived from the poultry industry increased from 5.3 percent in 1924 to 23.1 percent in 1946 and at the present time constitutes the largest income of any farm enterprise in this area. Factors influencing this development are: 1. High prices resulting from the war period of 1917 to 1920 followed by the depression period when prices were low. 2. The organization of cooperative egg-marketing associations. 3. …

The Measurement Of Agricultural Production In The Utah From 1920 To 1946, Owen L. Brough Jr. May 1947

The Measurement Of Agricultural Production In The Utah From 1920 To 1946, Owen L. Brough Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As agricultural leaders become increasingly aware of the economics involved in the production and marketing of agricultural products, there develops an increased need for more accurate and more complete methods of measuring agricultural production. This need is not only for the satisfactory measurement of the physical production of a given crop, but is also for a unit of measurement that will make possible a comparison of the production of individual enterprises and groups of enterprises for a given year and from year to year. Because the production of many crops, and livestock and livestock products are customarily measured according to …

The Effect Of Some Environmental Influences In Bulk Hybridization Of Grass, John W. Clark May 1942

The Effect Of Some Environmental Influences In Bulk Hybridization Of Grass, John W. Clark

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For decades man has been interested in selection and hybridization of crop plants, but it has not been until in comparatively recent years that anything of importance has been done toward the improvement of perennial forage grasses.

Sampling Studies In Morning Glory Roots, Lowell W. Rasmussen May 1941

Sampling Studies In Morning Glory Roots, Lowell W. Rasmussen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Farmers and agriculturalists have in recent years become more conscious of the seriousness of the weed problems. The solution of this problem is obviously the development of more efficient and less costly methods of eradication. Most pernicious weeds are propagated vegetatively by means of underground parts in which reserve food is stored as a source of energy in tiding the plant over winter and initiating spring growth each year. In order to get at the behavior of these perennial parts, it is necessary to resort to a study of root reserves. This involves information not only on the composition of …

Inheritance Studies And Possible Linkage Relationships In Barley Involving Five Factor Pairs, Freeman J. Byington May 1940

Inheritance Studies And Possible Linkage Relationships In Barley Involving Five Factor Pairs, Freeman J. Byington

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many studies on inheritance in barley have been made, but very little progress has as yet been obtained. Barley in many ways is an attractive plant with which to make inheritance studies. Unlike common wheat with 21 chromosome pairs and few distinct characters, barley has only 7 chromosome pairs and consequently only 7 possible linkage groups and many distinct characters that may be readily recognized. The chief difficulty is that many of these characters cannot be readily classified because a number of factors may be responsible for their production.

The purpose of this project has been to study in considerable …

Bulk Hybridization Of Smooth Bromegrass (Bromus Inermis), Wayne E. Domingo May 1940

Bulk Hybridization Of Smooth Bromegrass (Bromus Inermis), Wayne E. Domingo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Large populations of controlled hybrids are essential to the most rapid progress in many phases of plant breeding programs. Plant species vary in the ease with which they may be hybridized. Hand hybridization of forage grasses is usually slow and laborious, and the minuteness of the floral parts of most of the species which have perfect flowers renders their hybridization by hand especially difficult and tedious. This difficulty limits the use that forage grass breeders are making of the significant principles of hybridization and thereby retards progress in this phase of plant breeding. Any dependable, rapid technique of hybridization which …

Relationship Between Size Of Farm Business And Labor Income On Utah Farms, Milton S. Folkman May 1940

Relationship Between Size Of Farm Business And Labor Income On Utah Farms, Milton S. Folkman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the turn of the century there has been a trend within the State of Utah toward more and smaller farms. The original farm units taken up by the early settlers of this state have been divided and subdivided until Utah today has hundreds of uneconomical-sized farms too small to be operated profitably under their present organization.

A Study Of Hybrids Between Sugar Beets And Mangel Wurzels With Reference To Color Factors And Sugar Content, Boyd Berrey May 1939

A Study Of Hybrids Between Sugar Beets And Mangel Wurzels With Reference To Color Factors And Sugar Content, Boyd Berrey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Preliminary unpublished work at the Salt Lake City Laboratory of the Division of Sugar Plant Investigations, Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, indicates that beets showing the Y color factor (9) were larger than sugar-beet types recessive for this color factor (y y). It was suggested to the writer that an investigation be made to determine whether or not yield and sugar content were correlated with color factors in beets. Linkages between the R and Y color factors have been reported by Keller (9), and the results indicate a close linkage between color factors R …

An Economic Analysis Of Farm Tenure In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Glen B. Johnson May 1937

An Economic Analysis Of Farm Tenure In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Glen B. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Before presenting an economic analysis of farm tenure in the Uintah Basin, it will be helpful to consider some aspects of the historical, economic, and social background of that portion of the region included in this study.

A portion of the Uintah Indian Reservation, which was created in 1861, was opened to white settlement under the homestead and townsite laws on August 28, 1905 after 103,000 acres of farming land had been allotted to individual Indians living on the reservation and 276,000 acres reserved for Indian grazing lands and timber reserve.

Because of the large deposits of asphalt products that …

Studies On The Comparative Value Of The Hot Treatment (Krantz Patent) And Common Methods Of Handling Barnyard Manure, Orval E. Winkler May 1934

Studies On The Comparative Value Of The Hot Treatment (Krantz Patent) And Common Methods Of Handling Barnyard Manure, Orval E. Winkler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Antidating written human history the dung of animals, chalk, marl, wood ashes and other substances were probably used to increase the productivity of the soil. These practises found their way into the earliest farming activities of the Chinese, Persians, Greeks and Romans. (3)(11) In the Hebrew scriptures mention is made of the "Dung Gate". (10) This was undoubtedly a place given to the marketing of manures. That manure was used as a soil amendment in Asia Minor in Biblical times is not questioned. The famous Roman agricultural writer Cato (234 B.C.) wrote at length on manures and their handling. He …

Alfalfa Seed Production In Millard County, Utah As Related To Soil Type, George Whornham May 1932

Alfalfa Seed Production In Millard County, Utah As Related To Soil Type, George Whornham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa has a wide range of adaptability as a forage plant, but the areas in which it will produce seed successfully are extremely limited. These sections are confined almost exclusively to the arid or semi-arid regions of the world. In all other areas it is primarily a question of seasonal fitness. The extreme localization may be further emphasized by the fact that within the highest producing counties there are appreciable areas of land not suitable for seed production.

Influence Of Clipping On The Yield Of Forage In Certain Pastures At North Logan, Utah, Newel Washburn May 1931

Influence Of Clipping On The Yield Of Forage In Certain Pastures At North Logan, Utah, Newel Washburn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

"Pasture is the natural food of all domesticated herbivore, especially the ruminant, and the only single feed upon which it can be maintained in health indefinitely."

Pastures rank next to the alfalfa hay crop in total production of forage far livestock in Utah. For approximately five months each year pastures turnish the cheapest supply of feed available for dairy production. Their improvement and utilization to the best advantage as a source of valuable feed in Utah has been overshadowed by the abundance of alfalfa hay with its rich supply of minerals and high quality protein. There is a potentiality of …

A Farm Organization And Management Study In Western Millard County, Utah, George Thomas Blanch May 1931

A Farm Organization And Management Study In Western Millard County, Utah, George Thomas Blanch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to the cumulative effect of certain economic factors, the farmers of western Millard County, known as the Delta area, are in unfavorable economic conditions. Many of the farms are heavily mortgaged, taxes and interest in many cases are in arrears for several years, and in general, lack of prosperity in quite evident. The majority of the farm land in this area is within one of four drainage districts. These districts are known as drainage districts No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4. The cost and maintenance of these drainage systems is generally thought to be one of …

A Research Study Of Lamb Feeding In Winter Dry Lots At Monroe, Utah, 1928-29, George R. Henderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

By reason of the topography of the land, Utah is and probably will remain a livestock grazing state. As far as agriculture is concerned over 90 percent of the area is suitable for grazing only. This grazing range is used by cattle and sheep.

Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed May 1926

Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Considerable work has been done by plant breeders and investigators in the study of individual plant characters, but only a few have attempted to work out correlations between characters in crop plants. One reason for this seems to be, that many investigators have felt that correlation studies were of very little practical value. This attitude was due perhaps to the interpretation given correlation data, especially the nature of the casual agency or agencies to which the correlation was attributed. Most of our plant breeders however, have been too busy working on experiments with single characters and have given little or …

Effect Of Root-Rot Upon Sugar-Beet Seed Production, Louis F. Nuffer May 1923

Effect Of Root-Rot Upon Sugar-Beet Seed Production, Louis F. Nuffer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to considerable loss through root-rot of mother beets while in storage during the winter of 1918-1919 the Amalgamated Sugar Company asked advice in regard to planting beets which had decay lesions on them. Would the beets yield seed if planted? How much seed would these beets yield as compared with healthy beets? Would the seed produced be injured by having been grown on decayed beets? It was felt that an experiment carried out with the above questions in view would bring out many facts upon which to base conclusions in answering the questions of the Sugar Company.
