The Inhibition Of Germination Caused By The Lemma And Palea On Phalaris Arundinacea Seed, Nard Vee Allen
The Inhibition Of Germination Caused By The Lemma And Palea On Phalaris Arundinacea Seed, Nard Vee Allen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) is adapted to low wet lands and survives flooding and periods of drought. Much of the valley bottom land of Utah is flooded during part of the year, yet some of this land is very dry late in the summer. This grass could become an important forage for Utah's valley bottom lands if stand establishment could be assured. Low germination percentages and long germination periods under field conditions often result in poor stands.
In most cases quick uniform germination is a decided advantage in establishing stands. Fall plantings have usually been more successful than …
The Selection Of Superior Alfalfa Varieties For Utah Conditions, Richard M. Taylor
The Selection Of Superior Alfalfa Varieties For Utah Conditions, Richard M. Taylor
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Alfalfa plays an important part in Utah's economy. It is the major forage crop and occupies approximately 40 percent of all irrigated land in the state.
During the past most of the alfalfa varietal trials have been conducted in Cache Valley, which is not representative of conditions found throughout Utah. In fact, it would be impossible to select any one location for conducting tests where all insect, disease, and climatic conditions would be represented. In view of this it was felt that an attempt should be made to conduct varietal trials at several locations to permit the selection of varieties …

The potato enterprise is important in Utah as it provides a cash crop and also a means of diversifying and intensifying the operations on many irrigated farms. It is of particular value in the sections of the state that have a short growing season where other crops cannot feasibly be produced. The potato chip industry supplies a demand for large quantities of potatoes. The usage by this industry makes it a major factor in potato farming economy.
The making of chips originated over a hundred years ago as the result of an accident. A silver of potato fell into a …

Marketing decisions
Lamb producers and handlers are faced with many decisions in marketing their lambs. They not only must decide when and where to sell, …
Cost And Efficiency In Producing Sugar Beets In Utah County, Utah, 1951, Randolph Lamar Larsen
Cost And Efficiency In Producing Sugar Beets In Utah County, Utah, 1951, Randolph Lamar Larsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Man has always included some form of sugar in his diet. Only in the past two centuries has sugar been developed as an individual food. During that time vast amounts of money and time have gone into the development and improvement of sugar. In 1747, a German chemist by the name of Andreas Marggraf proved that sugar beets contained sugar. One of his pupils, Franz Karl Achard, in 1799 gave further evidence of this fact by his experiments.
Effect Of Hay Or Rate Of Grain Supplementation On Performance Of Lactating Dairy Cows Fed Clipped Pasture Forage, Clive Wendell Arave
Effect Of Hay Or Rate Of Grain Supplementation On Performance Of Lactating Dairy Cows Fed Clipped Pasture Forage, Clive Wendell Arave
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Pasture is considered one of our most important agricultural crops, contributing more than one third of all feed consumed by livestock in the United States. High quality pasture has been recognized to be highly important in efficient milk production. It has been shown, however, that good pasture must be supplemented by concentrates if milk production is to be maintained at a high level.
A pasture mixture developed at the Utah Agriculture Experiment Station has yielded considerably more total digestible nutrients per acre than other roughages or farm grains commonly grown in Utah. Concentrates tend to be relatively more expensive than …

Marketing Sheep And Lambs In Utah, 1954-55, Lloyd I. Holmes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The sheep industry of Utah began about the middle of the nineteenth century when the Mormon pioneers came to Utah. The first sheep in Utah were of Merino breeding, kept primarily for wool production. These breeds were decendants of the early Merino sheep from Spain and were probably introduced into this country by Spanish explorers. Sheep are produced to provide food and fiber in Utah. Utah's climate, topography, and natural vegetation are conducive to sheep production. Sheep do well in semi-arid climates and can economically harvest the natural vegetation on land not suited to crop production. Utah has large acreages …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many of the fluid milk processing plants in Utah are relatively small. The typical small plant in Utah is generally family operated with some hired help. Although most of the small plants are individually owned, some are operated as partnerships. Often the same man picks-up, processes, and then delivers the milk. Some of the processors also own dairy herds. In these cases the same man performs all the functions necessary to carry the milk products from the farm to the consumer's door. It is not uncommon to find the plant owner and manager performing all these duties himself.

Factors That Contribute To Success Of Selected Farm Ownership Borrowers In Utah, Grey M. Jensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Farming is a complex business. Financial success in farming is influenced by the organization and operation of the farm unit. The principal problem confronting farmers is knowing how to manage the resources to attain maximum income over a period of time. Combinations of resources involve problems relative to crops, livestock, machinery, labor, capital, credit, and many others. An attempt has been made in this study to measure the results of different combinations and operation of resources and to determine their association with financial success of the farm.

Artificial insemination of dairy cattle is one of the recent enterprises of dairymen in this area. It is an enterprise which has expanded rapidly and will likely continue to expand during the next few years. In this area the technician or inseminator collects from $6.00 to $10.00 at the time of first service. This entitles the dairyman to two repeat inseminations for that cow, if necessary, to get the cow pregnant. Of this amount the technician receives $2.75. A bonus payment is made so that technicians inseminating fewer than 500 cows receive a total payment of $3.60. The bonus payment …

The Effects Of Fertilizers On The Yield, Carotene Content And Tocopherol Content Of Ranger Alfalfa Hay In Utah, Charles Wm. Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Alfalfa is generally regarded as one of the world's most valuable cultivated forage crops. Few crops, if any, are equal to it in capacity to produce heavy yields of highly nutritious, palatable feed. A combination of desirable attributes as a forage plant and adaptation to a wide diversity of soil and climatic conditions has led to the use of alfalfa in the world to an extent probably exceeding that of any other single legume or grass. Alfalfa constantly proves itself as a valuable feed for most types of livestock. This is especially true in the states where a large amount …
Salt Movement And Forage Crop Establishment In A Saline-Alkali Soil As Influenced By Ridges And Furrows, Sprinkler Irrigation, And Soil Amendments, D. C. Purnell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An estimated two to four million acres of irrigable saline and alkali soils of the United States return very little income to land owners (17,19). Increased needs for forage crops, and the relatively high salt and alkali tolerance of some improved forage species, once established, suggests a way of increasing revenue from some of these lands without costly reclamation.

Control Of Pheasant Eye As It Affects Yield And Other Related Factors In Winter Wheat, Ray J. Downs
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Pheasant eye (Adonis annua L.), a native of Europe, is commonly cultivated as an ornamental, but occasionally escapes into fields and waste places. It is prevalent in certain areas in the United States, especially southward, on heavy soils that are inadequately drained (20). This plant is one of a number of early maturing winter annual weeds that infests dryland wheat in northern Utah, and it has become a problem in certain lowland areas.
This weed cannot be controlled by usual cultural practices because it makes most of its growth during the time of the year when the soil is …
Factors Determining Fruit Set And Seed Development In Artificially Pollinated Tomatoes, Charles Howard Henry
Factors Determining Fruit Set And Seed Development In Artificially Pollinated Tomatoes, Charles Howard Henry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Commercial plantings of tomato hybrids will give increases in earliness and yield because of hybrid vigor, but seed costs become a limiting factor. The necessity of hand-pollination makes the production of first generation hybrid tomato seed a costly enterprise. Failures of fruit set and seed development in artificially pollinated tomatoes are two contributing causes for the increased cost of F1 seed.
The purpose of this investigation is to study some basic factors influencing these failures and to find ways of increasing fruit set and number of seeds per fruit.
The scope in addition to the field studies described includes …
Attitudes Of School Administrators And Instructors Of Vocational Agricultural Education In Utah, Horace L. Morrill Jr.
Attitudes Of School Administrators And Instructors Of Vocational Agricultural Education In Utah, Horace L. Morrill Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Whether or not to provide post-high school education for the farm youth and adult is a highly controversial issue facing many school administrators and teachers of vocational agriculture in Utah today. If one is to start farming and make continuous progress until he becomes a full-fledged farmer it requires several years of training beyond the high school vocational agricultural period. This is because of a lack of maturity and a lack of time, during the high school period, when the individual must and should get a general education.
Many of our present day high schools do not build their curriculum …

A quick observation in this modern world makes one realize the great problem of leisure time that is upon us. Man is working fewer hours and retirements are at a younger age. Now man finds himself poorly prepared to cope with the situation. In our schools today millions of dollars are spent teaching art, crafts, dramatics, music, and physical education in an attempt to train for leisure, yet we spend a comparatively little amount of money for continuing these activities in out-of-school hours.

Fertilizer Trials On Dryland Winter Wheat, I. G. Sampson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wheat is one of the major crops of Utah and for more than 50 years farmers have been raising wheat on the dry lands of the state. The system they use is known as the alternate cropping or crop-follow system and consists of one year of crop alternating with one year of clean cultivation known as fallow.
Wheat removes a considerable amount of the natural plant food elements from the soil each year. This is especially true of nitrogen. According to Bracken and Greaves (9) the original low supply of nitrogen in most Utah soils together with the depleting effects …
