Project Clear's Paper Choice: A Hypertext System For Giving Advice About Legal Research, I. Trotter Hardy

Faculty Publications

Project CLEAR-Computers in Legal Education: Assistance with Research-applies computer techniques to teaching and advising students about legal research. "Hypertext" is a software technique appropriate both for creating information structures that users can browse through, and for creating question-and-answer decision trees that provide specific advice to users. These two hypertext techniques have been put together in Project CLEAR's Paper Choice, a computer program that provides knowledge and gives advice to law students about legal research.

Pharmaceuticals And Intellectual Property: Meeting Needs Throughout The World, Thomas G. Field Jr. Jan 1990

Pharmaceuticals And Intellectual Property: Meeting Needs Throughout The World, Thomas G. Field Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarship

To the extent that most people think about patents and other forms of intellectual property at all, they tend to be aware that the owners of such property may have the legal capacity to limit market entry--without fully appreciating the extent to which products or processes that can be easily copied might otherwise be unavailable. Focusing on their function in recouping risk capital, this article will survey the types and functions of intellectual property. Then it will attend to the situation in developing countries, particularly the role of intellectual property in meeting their needs for medical products.

The First Amendment In An Age Of Paratroopers, David Skover, Ronald Collins Jan 1990

The First Amendment In An Age Of Paratroopers, David Skover, Ronald Collins

Faculty Articles

As the lead piece in a Colloquy entitled The First Amendment and the Paratroopers' Paradox, this article argues that today's free speech theory is largely grounded in 18th Century fears of government's tyrannical censorship. This theory is ill-equipped to deal with a distinct tyranny in 21st Century America, a tyranny playing upon the public's insatiable appetite for amusement. Those who venture to develop free speech principles to suit a new cultural environment are the First Amendment paratroopers of our time, the ones who realize that we cannot retain our old constitutional prerogatives in a transformed world. The Paratroopers' Paradox: To …

Patenting The Human Genome, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 1990

Patenting The Human Genome, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

The increasing promise of federal funding for mapping and sequencing the human genome has brought with it renewed attention in the research science community to issues of intellectual property protection for products of biotechnology research. Echoing concerns raised a decade ago in the debate over commercialization of academic biomedical research, scientists have called for the free availability of all information generated through the Human Genome Project and have argued against allowing private intellectual property rights in such knowledge. Meanwhile, private parties have quietly been obtaining patents on bits and pieces of the human genome from the Patent and Trademark Office …
